Listening to Keith talk about Eberron, working to make it a world that a DM and their players can explore and make their own with all of the unanswered questions, and how to run an Eberron game and make it feel distinct + cool is always so, so, SO wonderful. More Keith Baker is always a good thing in my opinion! x)

I love the part about describing the arcane focus. I'm a ghostwise halfling diviner and my arcane focus (and spell book) is my tarot card deck. When I hit second level, I dropped the Knight of Pentacles on the table saying that as I cast down the card and finished my incantation, the image of a Knight in armor resembling coins rose off the card and superimposed over my body. The shadow sorcerer was like "wait, why didn't my spell do something like that?" The DM said: "Because you didn't say that it did."

Gotta say, I felt forced into Eberron due to DDO adopting it (no longer a player) and it felt ...contrived? I am relieved to see I had a very skewed point of view and there is a much more intriguing history and many potential story launching points due to the Mourning Lands and past disaster (neither of which I was aware of until this video). Keith Baker has reminded me why he is one of my favorite authors. Bravo gentlemen!

I love the approach of opening the setting and freeze it for the customer to fill it how they think things should happen instead giving us a metaplot putting the playing group aside of a global story happening whatever they do. And i love the cat :-P

I'm running a campaign with an artillerist in the party, and he casts his spells through the usage of wooden figures that he calls "Slicks" but are basically Pikmin. When he leveled to 3, one of those Pikmin gained a degree of sentience and is basically the turret's pilot.

That bit about calling players' attention to environmental elements is going to be very helpful running for new players. Seems like exactly the motivation they'll need to remember that, yes, you can do anything!
@nickm91025 жыл бұрын
Just remember not to punish the player for that creativity. I have played with several DMs that would make you roll a DEX check to swing on the chandelier. For a T1 PC maybe but by T2 it should just happen or only have the DC 10. Repeated failures will do more damage to creative plans than the worst DM or an adversarial DM.

In my game I'm playing a Kalashtar, Way of the Astral self monk who was sent to the Forgotten Realms, via the realm of dreams, to restore a Goddess whose fragment wound up in Eberron in the hope that she can be brought back to Eberron to protect the Kalashtar from the Dreaming Dark. And since we're playing Tyranny of Dragons and another PC decided to become a Hexblade using one of the weapons of the Goddess, ToD has essentially become "who can resurrect their Goddess first?" And it's great.

Around 2:26, Keith states something I think not enough people realize about D&D. The Chargen rules only apply to player characters. In some campaigns, NOBODY ELSE might be able to cast healing spells. In others, there might be "paladins" with totally different abilities than the ones a PC paladin can have. You can always separate the setting fluff from the rules crunch to create new interpretations. And as a DM, you're not limited by the chargen rules when you're making up NPCs even if they have the same "class" as a PC. Your NPC spellcasters may be able to cast spells from different lists. Your NPCs might not follow the multiclass rules. Don't just throw any old thing together without regard for how it's going to interact with the PCs, but do whatever you need to make an interesting setting. (One of the things I like to do is replace spell slots for "expendable" spellcasters with some basic attacks and actions like a monster might have, so I have everything I need in the stat block, for instance)

In my game, I created a GPS: Glyph Positioning Symbiote. It had all three crystals (Kyber,...) with precious metals intertwined with crystals and a Symbiote that you attach to one of your ear, and it slowly grows under the back of your skin at the base of your skull to your other ear. They will level up as you do, as +1 to Hearing bonus per level, max was +3 or +5, up to +3 protection from sound/noise attacks. Because the Symbiotes came from a batch, they can allow you to communicate with the other members of your adventure group and the parent from where it came from. So your boss or HQ can communicate with you and your group, one tier up. If you are above ground, they can communicate with you anywhere on Ebberon. But if you go 10 feet below ground into Kyber, only those with you can communicate, but the outside world can not. Basically, my adventures had NPC boss that had several teams all over Ebberon on missions and he had to communicate with them. It similar to the device/map that the a NPC has to track all his ships in the Principalities. But my adventures boss had the same thing plus communicate with them. His Map Room had a Map of all that is known of Ebberon, with individual maps on the wall of the lands of formal Five Kingdoms continent. And as much that is known of the other Island continents. He ran a merchant empire. He even commission a special ship that was able to fly as an airship, set sail as a ship at sea and a submersible. I name it "The Great Eastern" that laid the Trans-Atlantic cable that had multiple redundancies. And the place that made it was that vechical-wright place that negotiates with Elementals. It had a fire, water, air Elementals working together. It mostly operated as a airship, but when it wanted to be more clandestine, posed at sea ship or hidden as a submersible.

I've been discussing a kinda Eberron related encounter with my DM discord group just moments ago, so the topic/timing of this video prompts me to continue the discussion here: Suppose you wanted an intense combat encounter atop the roofs of a lightning rail train, how would you go about designing it? As inspiration, I have this idea for the gnomes of my setting to long ago having had an underground lightning rail running through the now abandoned dwarven deep roads. I would love some intense action on the roofs of a moving train. Since it's underground, I have ideas like something happening on initiative count 20. This could be things like everyone in a 10 ft wide line down the map has to make a dex safe or get stunned and damaged from the impact of a low hanging stalactite the train is passing. Instead of a 10ft wide area, it could be the entire area and even succeeding the dex save requires you to fall prone.because the tunnel is getting lower. The party might be chasing people trying to dislodge their carts behind so people falling prone will turn things interesting. Other ideas I have involve flying creatures (I'm thinking goblinoid werebats possibly throwing bombs or something) attacking the train while its slowed down or even themselves being temporarily doped by potions of haste

I loved that about the Lord of the Rings Online MMO, you could be a wizard but obviously not one that's on par with Gandalf, so your wizard would throw lit packets of gunpowder at the orcs. "I cast grenade!" lol Seeing that in D&D would be awesome, "Ok all your spells are the same mechanically but they use chemistry and science more than magic."

I got the chance to play the Adventures League Ebberon mods (Embers of the Last War). I made a Changeling Celestial Warlock with the First level Sorcerer. The backstory, she was security at one of the Decanith War Forged facilities and the Warlock levels are the result of the Mourning. She took on a Teifling form "caused by the Mourning" as her alternative persona. I was able to make the big reveal to the party in DDAL-ELW06. Our Druid attacked me while I impersonated one of the main module villains. It was a ton of fun but a little difficult with just me and the DM knowing the truth before then.

So I'm gonna be playing an Eberron campaign, and I picked up a copy of the book so I could learn all about how to play a warforged... and I'm super disappointed. There's a warforged on the cover, and they appear in tons of the art, they are clearly the mascots for the setting. But the actual info on playing one is less than a page, not counting the stat block. I don't see anything about the subtypes, or having integrated tools or armor, or about the ghulra marks, or how they were invented, or anything. It's very cursory and while the rest of the content is good, I feel like I basically paid 55 bucks for a blurb that would have fit on the back of the book. Still looking forward to the campaign, but I guess I'll just have to make up my own lore? If there's more buried in there somewhere, someone let me know, but I flipped through all 320 pages and there's no index, so maybe I missed it?
