That’s no kind of life for a child and everything in my being hates exploitation of all kinds. Her biological mother gave her up at the age of five (which would be traumatizing for a child that age who already knows who she is, who her parents are, her siblings, etc), then only wanted her back when she was able to profit from her daughter, financially.

That story makes me very angry. Judy Garland's portrayal of Dorothy Gale in the Wizard of Oz is one of the most widely loved performances in all of movie history. Millions of children, myself included, watched that movie when we were young and cherished it as a beautiful part of our childhood. Then when I found out the dark and sinister details of how Judy was treated it forever changed the way I feel about that movie. As an adult I used to enjoy watching it whenever it was on TV but not anymore.

I think the worst part is that she was not truly loved by anyone around her. I am not surprised to hear the school Principal found her “incapable of acting” and that she was emotionally unstable later on in life. Even though she was very smart, she wasn’t able to grow mentally and emotionally, partly due to the neglect she suffered at such an young age. Thank you so much for your analysis, Dr. Grande.❤

Yes. And they wanted her to replace her original identity with that of the child star/cash cow. Her own self wasn’t wanted. It’s one of the worst things a parent can do. I think Gia Carangi suffered because of the same with her mother who was more interested when she was a model. There are other examples too.

Are child actors now heavily regulated by whatever acting union they are supposed to join to act? I hope there is a state or federal system that prevents the abuse of these very susceptible kids. All I hear is horror stories of them being abused and/or ripped off of their money by parents and guardians. Then as grown ups they all seem to be addicted to something or end up in crime. Why would any parent want their kids to enter that Hollywood scene. Wait until they are adults before they do any professional acting. I don't know how Hollywood would get people to play kids in movies though?

A girl in my class who wasn’t very good was pushed by her mother and was very unhappy. In law school, several of the guys didn’t want to be there but had fathers who pushed them. Parents shouldn’t try to make kids live out their dreams.

One avenue to investigate if she is actually deceased is the Social Security Death Index. (amateur family genealogist here) . Even if she had changed her name a some point it is unlikely that her Social Security number was changed and Lora Lee might be tracked down that way.

My dad's younger brother was the 7th child of married but poor parents. They wanted him and the grandma was willing to take care of him, but I guess it did prove too difficult and he was put up for adoption. So even from loving homes kids can still be given up based on hard circumstances. My dad was the only child of married well-off parents, they just didn't want any kids so his adoption was arranged pretty early into her pregnancy.

The movie "The Godfather" was fiction but Mario Puzo based the original book on things that happen in real life and it contains many illustrations of typical human behavior. This explains why 50 years later people are still fascinated by the characters and events portrayed in the movie. The story of Lora Lee Michel brings to mind that rich, big shot movie producer depicted in the Godfather who had a more than professional interest in one of his female child actress proteges.

Lora might have had some underlying condition to begin with, then she was probably somewhat traumatized by being abandoned by her mother and placed in a new home...no matter how good that home might have been. Then she found out that by pretending (acting), she could get the attention and love...or even some sense of control over her life...that she desperately craved. I think that judge saw something, perhaps that that child was emotionally on the edge and needed a home-life rather than fame and fortune. That fame, though, may have been the way she distracted herself from the pain she was feeling. It just seems like trauma and pain was piled on top of one another for that child, and I wonder if she didn't have a mental break at some point or some kind of dissociation.

It's possible Lora Lee emotionally matured during or after prison, and made a conscious decision to exit the path that had been an integral part of her history of abuse, which included Hollywood. True, she would never be famous again, but she had learned to defer reward, and the contingencies of reinforcement around being an actress were ultimately outweighed by the contingencies of reinforcement around a stable, peaceful final chapter of her life. By this theory, Lora Lee's final years might actually have been her happiest.

With her awful, unstable childhood and with being introduced so early to the artificial world of acting and the stage, Lora Lee moved into a mental state where she was no longer interested in the difference between reality and fantasy. Happy holidays Dr Grande. It’s 21° here in Seattle, there’s snow (and ice) on the ground and I am wrapping presents as I listen to this story. I’m adopted and I’m so grateful to have been adopted by a loving and supportive family. Life wasn’t perfect but it was normal. I am always saddened when I hear these stories that go sideways because the parents do wrong by the child or the child is the one who is in the wrong. On a side note, I ended up accidentally finding my biological mother and siblings when I did a DNA test. I only wanted to know my ethnicity and some medical information, but SURPRISE! I have to say that adoption was the best thing that could have happened in my situation for all involved. I’m friends with my siblings but I don’t have a relationship with my biological mom. I’m ok with that. I never needed that. I always respected her decision.

All that poor child needed was for someone to really love her and cherish her. I was not surprised that she could have gotten cancer that young. I do believe there must have been some sort of abuse with the adoptive parents. Maybe emotional abuse rather than physical. I just find it very hard to believe that after losing your child that you would so blatantly go against a judges order and risk losing them again. I don't care how big of a star my daughter was, if someone took my baby away and a condition of getting her back was giving up the career, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to do so.

So many kids back then would be given away after years of being with their families. The amount of trauma built up during those times. Absolutely insane. It seems like people during certain time periods truly lacked any emotional intelligence they just went off of survival or self fulfillment. Like "these kids are no good to us now that they aren't cute babies, so goodbye forever or until you can bring in some cash!"

Bless that judge. If I had children who wanted to go into stage/screen performing, I would tell them to wait until they were 18 where they could decide for themselves. Good afternoon, Dr. Grande. Sounds like the making of a great television miniseries. Unfortunately, she seems to be typical of the child stars of that era, where children (and the wages they earned) were controlled by others who saw them largely as milk cows. Once control is broken, the ex-child stars go crazy with "freedom," and the result seems to have been predestined. Damaged children who have been forced to live in fantasy worlds of the stage and screen rarely, I think, grow up into healthy adults. She might very well still be alive, although elderly, if her disregard for norms and conventions didn't get the best of her. Thanks for sharing!😀
