This video describes the difference between introversion (intraversion) and extroversion (extraversion). Introversion and Extroversion are both personality traits. Introverts tend to gain energy from being alone, thinking, and self-reflecting. Extroverts tend to feel refreshed by engaging in social interactions. Some introverts do not like a lot of stimulation such as bright lights and loud sounds. Extroverts tend to seek out stimulation and do not mind crowded venues. Introverts tend to have a few close friendships, whereas extroverts tend to have many acquaintances. Both introverts and extroverts can take on the characteristics of the opposite trait, but it is sometimes difficult to do, particularly for those who are pure introverts and pure extroverts. Carl Jung coined the terms introversion and extroversion as part of analytic theory.

This was a good video in explaining introversion and extroversion. I have never heard about the energy factor for explaining the differences between the two. This was informative.

“When they come home, the extrovert’s ready to go to another party” I felt exhausted just hearing that.

Given that it is sometimes difficult for pure introverts to adapt and take on characteristics of extroverts, I wonder how many resort to drinking alcohol (i.e. in social situations parties). It would be interesting to know how many become extroverts with "liquid courage"

I'm toward the extremely introverted end of the spectrum, but I seem to socialize like an extrovert-- I have a lot of acquaintances and a small number of very close friends. While I don't often post on social media, I have accounts on multiple platforms that I look at more than once per day, just to see if there's anything new from anyone I haven't seen lately. Then again, I only sign up for a new platform when a close friend recommends it, and I'm constantly quietly unfollowing people rather than risking a confrontation with them.

This is a detailed explanation of extroverts vs. introverts. Some extroverts tend to feel refreshed by engaging in social interactions. Some introverts do not like a lot of stimulation such as bright lights and loud sounds.

Thanks Doc. I’ve been trying hard to fit into my extroverted first but it has been exhausting and now I’m burned out. I admit, it’s so much fun being an extrovert, but it’s not who I am.

This is definitely one of the best and detailed descriptions of the differences between the two. I get a sense that most people don't realise that it's all about the flow of energy based on circumstances and person's genetics, that a person is still rooted at some position on this spectrum no matter how much they adapt.

Thank you for this great suggestion! Because of your idea, today I recorded a video covering the Big Five in general and one on Agreeableness. I hope to have those edited and published within the next few weeks. I will start working on the other three traits next week. Thanks for watching -

This was a great video explaining introversion and extroversion. I also forgot that the terms were developed by Carl Jung. I enjoyed learning about the various theories on the two concepts. I would also agree that genetics play a large part in the tendency to develop each trait.

Something I find very interesting about Jung's cognitive functions is that people can be extroverted and introverted in different ways. And to me that explains so much. That's why I like taking into account the different models (MBTI, Big 5...). Who knows one day we may be able to unify the different models in a new one that can explain a lot more. I already see how these two models can work together.

Doctor; Why do people prey on other people’s grief, and does that have anything to do with extroversion vs. introversion? For example are people in grief in a temporary state of introversion and thus more vulnerable to extroverts. In big cities I have heard that people watch the obituaries to find possible buy, and sell client addresses. It seems creepy to me but it’s even on TV. 📺

I was never one to put too much stock into energy but as I am getting older I can see where this important to take into consideration. I am an introvert and where I work does not have a lot of people around during the week, but when it gets to a certain weekend a lot more people are around, needing something, asking a lot from you. I have begun to notice that on those weekends I am very drained at the end of the day and need a lot of sleep or time by myself to get myself back to normal so to speak. Due to my job I am a more social introvert because I need to be but will need to take the time to get that quiet time back or else I will go through a type of mood where I have very low energy or want to do anything. Very interesting.

Your description of introverts is spot on! I wish you would do a video on how intorverts can cope with extroverts. Little background, I'm a hermit. I'm everything you've described about an introvert in the video. I get my energy from being alone, but I come from a large family, and many of them are social butterflies who need to be in constant contact with me and each other. It drives me nuts! I feel they constantly harrass me for attention; always calling or wanting me to join in on social events, popping up at my door unannounced to socialise. Their excuse is I won't answer my phone. I feel I'm forced to be social with my family, and to be honest I don't want to, at least not as much as they want me to. I'd prefer to see them more like once a month, and that isn't enough for them. Maybe something is wrong with me? I mean, I live a peaceful and predictable life, stable. I just don't like to be social all the time. I'm a loner and always have been, and my family knows this but they don't respect my space. How can introverts overcome these expectations to be in tight knit social circles, mainly family social circles. Lol

To add, I love my family dearly, and I am blessed to have a good family that wants to be with me all the time, that's why setting boundaries is so difficult. I'm just looking for a good balance

I would just tell them to leave you alone and when you want to talk to them or socialize with them that you will call them or set up a meeting or something.

Same! I never knew that the differences were where the energy came from. As Dr. Grande mentioned I had this idea that extroverts are outgoing and introverts are shy individuals.
