This video attempts to answer the question: What is the best personality profile?
Another way to think of this question is: What personality profile has the optimal mental health associated with it?
The answer is expressed using the five-factor model of personality (FFM). The FFM looks at personality as being in five big traits, sometimes they're called the big five. I remember them through the acronym OCEAN: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Each of these five traits has six facets.
For example, with extraversion, we see warmth, gregariousness, assertiveness, activity, excitement-seeking, and positive emotions. To come up with a healthy profile, the article reference below used a number of instruments and experts. What is the healthy personality profile that they came up with? Simply put, its high openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion. and agreeableness, and low in neuroticism. Being more specific looking at the facet level, it's high scores and low scores on particular facets: openness to experience - high feelings and average fantasy; conscientiousness - high competence; extraversion - high warmth and positive emotions and average excitement-seeking; agreeableness - high straightforwardness and average modesty; and neuroticism - low score on angry hostility.

This is an important lesson for you guys. I scored 98% in Agreeableness. I scored 95% in Compassion, and 98% in Politeness. I remember feeling so proud of that score, and when I was going through my traits with my brother who scores very low in Agreeableness, he said to me, “woah, 98% in Agreeableness, that’s bad!” I was confused what he meant, as being a compassionate, polite person is a good thing, but his response was, “yeah, but it’s basically saying you’re a complete push over who can’t stand up for yourself, and that’s bad! No one respects a pushover.” I thought that what he said made a lot of sense, and it taught me that there is no such thing as a good or bad personality, we are all different, we all have our positives and negatives. Being high in agreeableness is a good thing, and it is also a bad thing. So if you score “badly” in something, don’t worry.

well said exactly my case. just to improve the ideia. "PEOPLE Pleaser" very common trait related to narcissistic parents. Be good not by an intrinsic value, but by being a rat lab conditioned to be good for the whole life. . you are only good if you are capable of being bad. and in the correct circunstances you choose not to be. i took me just 25 years to understand. than it came psychological rebirth. on and on. and the beautifulness of life keeps its cycles. sorry for my English cheers from brazil

Their concept of optimal reflects a preference for and value of robustness or resistance to up-ending. High conscientiousness for stability and structure, high extraversion for joie de vivre and sociability, low neuroticism, openness for adaptation, and agreeableness to bolster social connections which make an individual even harder to destroy.

My husband has this type of personality, probably the most emotionally stable and optimistic person I have known. Family background was not ideal but he turned out to be great. Raised by a loving, simple, but uneducated mother and a narcissistic father. Mom was there to provide constant care and love without much emotional manipulation. The good thing about his narcissistic father was that he left him alone. Growing up, His dad liked to travel and go out on his own constantly without the children and the wife. So, basically just left them be. Dad’s emotional manipulation was heavily applied to the oldest child, him being the youngest, was largely ignored. I can see the damage done to the oldest sibling.

A very fine summation of healthy personality traits, Dr Grande. The major confusion I have is that introversion is never mentioned, so if someone is an introvert but has the agreeableness and warmth of an extrovert, does that mean the introvert is less mentally healthy? Or totally mentally unhealthy? I’d fail this test, anyway - too perfectionistic (but only regarding myself), not others. I do believe authenticity is important in mental health, but that’s merely my own opinion. Thank you 😊

Another way to call this is an orientation, rather than an exact science. The other side could be the unhealthy living style.. Another factor missing in studies apart from the ones u mentioned is intuition, sympathy, antipathy, attraction, unattractive, which are also inexplicable factors that influence our daily behaviors and interactions at a certain level. My mini thoughts here. Thank u so much for sharing this knowledge. I find it very interesting.

In the past when taking a personality test that used colors to label personality characterisitcs I read that the 'best' personality for mental health often depends on the favored methods of educating children in the public school system. That "True Color" personality test I took almost 21 years ago said that the orange colored personality range was best for predicting mental health. My own "True Color" test result was an equal balance between the blue and green personality color factors. I am not sure what any of those test results meant back then or now. The person admistering the "true Colors" personality test after looking at my scores took me aside and gave me the awful warning that I was going to have a difficult life. So Dr. Grande seeing your success gives me hope.

I found something talking about "Healthy Neuroticism". High Neuroticism is associated with a shorter life span, but apparently a study found some people with high neuroticism _and_ Conscientiousness have lower levels of Interleukin-6 protein, which is a biomarker for inflammatory diseases. Having high conscientiousness would also help prevent individuals from unhealthy self medicating for relief from their neurotic feelings, and to push them toward an active healthy lifestyle (out of fear of the consequences I guess). I love this personality stuff, it's really interesting

Healthy personality profile High scores on facets: Open to feelings Confidence Warmth Positive emotions Straight forwardness Moderate scores on facets: Creativity / Fantasy Modesty Excitement seeking Low on scores on all facets on neuroticism I may have missed some points .. "normal" personality profile is similar to a psychological "healthy" profile but not exactly. Some Personality Disorders like BDP have an unhealthy profile, despite the fact that they have some similarities with the healthy profile but negative emotions are making the difference. NPD as well etc. It's just one way of looking at personality and some traits are not covered by the five factor model, like having insight etc.

Thanks for the interesting video, Dr. Grande! When discussing an optimal personality profile, one central feature seems to fall outside the scope of the Big Five frame of reference - and that is a person's right degree of flexibility, or adaptability to changing environment. You mentioned flexibility at the end of this video, and I think it is qualitatively distinct from the big five. As I see it, flexibility is a dynamical characteristic, whereas the Big Five represent a kind of static frame of reference within which those personal dynamics would play out. Still, I can't help feeling that it is precisely flexibility that captures the notion of a healthy person. One can ask then: what is a good degree of flexibility (not too "flabby" but also not too rigid), and what are healthy limits of flexibility beyond which it becomes a lack of integrated identity?

Good points. Flexibility and openness are integrated personality qualities. One cannot be flexible and not open to new, and cannot be open to new without being flexible. The difference is that flexibility is dynamic by definition and openness is a passive trait.

This is related to mental health on the level of an individual. It would be interesting to try to find what distribution (and variation in distribution between individuals) is preferable on the level of a society. I guess that the preferable society may overall benefit from persons who go well above the preferable level of openness (like artists) and conscientiousness, and those who go below the preferable level of extroversion and agreeableness (like scientists), for example. And this can of course be further specified in the 6 traits that make up each dimension. But I guess you enter the domain of culture, sociology and politics if you make assumptions about what is preferable on the collective level. And it would become very very complex. Perhaps you can try to say something about what is best for maintaining a broad consensus (as in not damaging polarized) in a liberal democracy? America (among others) could use this kind of information. :-)

Dr Grande makes a lot of sense . What I don't understand is after expressing facts re personality etc. It's always followed by Dr Grande stating that ' it's not always the case!' Isn't that just a ' cop out' in case the counselor/ therapist has diagnosed incorrectly? Doesn't it negate everything previously stated?

Hmm. I scored very high on openess, agreeableness, and medium high on extroversion. Very low on conscientiousness, low on neuroticism. And yes, this mirrors my self image of a curious cheerful friendly person who's a little airheaded/forgetful, but it was quite a kick in the stomach when I saw the conscientiousness score. 😱. Every nightmare and worry I've had, since a very young age, has been about forgetting to do something good or accidentally doing something bad, because that is undoubtedly my major weakness. And I've surrounded myself with people who are high in conscientiousness because I see the value in this trait. And then in my 30s I got diagnosed with ADHD. Hello!

Balance is the KEY..Some extroverversion being outgoing..with some inner introversion..also (conscienciousness) also knowing one's skills abilities and talents and how to make the most of them)... caring warmth..positive emotions with healthy boundries..good anger management..understanding how to recover from negative experiences..with the ability to be sympathetic/ empathetic..and agreeable..These might suggest a healthy personality! 😊 The Ability to be flexible and learn how to cope with the environment..people and one's self Without being overly judgemental harsh or blame or shame others or self..leads to healthier inner feelings..and cooperation with others! If only psychology would take into effect diet..lack of dopomine or seritonin..environmental effects.. loss lack grief and whether the person was more introverted or extroverted..more could be addressed as to personality disorders! Optimism Positivity & Hope help Enormously are a trademark of healthy behaviors! A questionaire helping clients answer what has shaped their personality and mostly affected them..should be included in their assessment (interaction with parents siblings authority figures..spouses/children).These should be in the history of each cliet/ patient! If Cancer has a more rounded healing approach..shouldn't mental health? 😍 (What most people that are EMPATHS don't realize..is that those that are NARCISSISTIC..BPD..ASPD..and those that have anger/rage are attracted to Empaths..or those innocent\ naive to these personalities..those with these disorders want to accepted healed and have healthier relationships..but they don't know how..or how to heal themselves...some get trapped in the past hurts or stay in a certain behavior for years..or the rest of their life😞).

But those "bad" personality traits must be good for something, or evolution would have eliminated them and we'd see much less variation. I've read somewhere that high neuroticism correlates with high creativity and problem solving abilities, because rumination and creative thinking happen in the same part of the brain. What do you know about that? Can creative activities help ro reduce the tendency to worry and ruminate? And there's something I've been wondering about for a long time: There's this myth that artists and other creative "geniuses" are somehow fundamentally different and more prone to mental illness than average humans (and that artists are born with fully developed talents and can live off exposure), which gets perpetuated by pop psychology . Is there any actual science to support that? Is there something like an "average artist" personality profile - traits other than neuroticism and openness that are very high or low in creative individuals? Anything that helps to demystify my job would be much appreciated. Also, I find these topics fascinating!

There is no "best" in evolutionary terms. What may be considered "best" under those terms is what is conducive to survival under a specific set of circumstances and circumstances change. If you don't go with those terms you'd kinda have to define and argue for the relevance of other terms. The operative question here being "best at what and why do we care?"

It definitely differs from person to person. For me, I have openness 99th and conscientiousness 1st. I wouldn’t change this as it gives me an outlook that I’ve discovered is unique, and in my opinion, positively so. But, it’s describing extreme ADHD I have, so it almost impossible to work the boring stuff on my business without meds. Despite that, I can memorize a Beethoven sonata or write a book on any number of original thoughts I have in under a week due to those same traits. If I were paid for my ideas or my music, I would be extremely productive and that would be best, at least for my sake. But I’m not, not yet at least, so it’s very bad for me and I need to change my brain chemistry five days out of the week to counteract the traits and save their manifestations for when I have time to enjoy myself.

With all due respect, I don't agree with that study's conclusion. Not that I made a research of my own or anything, but I believe there is no such thing as a "best personality type". Every personality has strengths and weaknesses. No one is perfect. What one needs to do is to optimally put their strengths to work, and try to minimize the effects of their weaknesses. Everyone can make a positive impact in this world, regardless of their personality type. I hope my opinion doesn't put be me on the lower side of agreeableness;)

Shouldn't this correlate to longest lifespan and/or most offspring in order to reduce subjectivity? I would think too much open to experience gets one killed young, too much neuroticism leads one to suicide or cardiovascular issues, low agreeableness doesn't get you very far with the opposite gender, etc.

Long life doesn't matter as long as you reproduce. For example if you cut a swath through women having a half dozen children and die at 23 and those children grow to adulthood and reproduce then you're good.

Surely the "best" or "optimal" personality from the perspective of a mental health expert differs to what a corporate CEO or a military leader might say.

The FFM captures authenticity and insight, indirectly, but not in the most useful way. Without these characteristics, it's unlikely that one's self-reported personality traits will be accurate. If there were a way to compare someone's "real" traits with their FFM score, that would be rather interesting.

Dr. Grande: "According to this article, the healthiest personality would be high in O., C., E. and A., and low in Neuroticism" Me, a kid with generalized anxiety: Really high in O., mid-high in C., mid-high in E., high in A. Okay, seems like I'm fairly healthy. Then I check my Neuroticism and it's really high, lol Normal people problems, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why do you always use the 5 factor model? Isn’t it a bit reductionist? Aren’t there other models suitable for different contexts?

@@privatprivat7279 I will do any tests. I just found out my IQ is 98 percentile at 56 years old. I wished I knew this younger. I recently found my EQ is in the 99 percentile too. I even out did Dr, Phil, and scored 160. Then I did an hour EQ test, and scored 99 percentile. LOL. I just always thought I was street smart. Then with a perfect social and self awareness and management scores, I always thought I wastoo hyper vigilant. Its weird how you don't really know how different you are compared to other people until you do these tests. I just always that I was just me.

All major questions of science are philosophical in nature. Whenever a scientist asks himself about the fundamentals of his discipline, he finds philosophy, whether he likes it or not. And those who never suffer from these issues are mediocre scientists
