This video describes the difference between guilt and shame. Guilt is an awareness of doing something wrong. It is focused on the behavior. Guilt is associated with correcting a wrong. Usually guilt is revealed and shame is concealed. Shame is a feeling of pain that can occur after a feeling of guilt. Shame is focused on someone’s perceived value or self-esteem. Shame is internalized and has an irrational component. Generally, guilt is thought of as good and shame is thought of as unhealthy, however, there are exceptions.

This is extremely important. I wish I had learned the difference between guilt and shame at a young age--there's so much one can do with guilt to turn it to good account, whereas wallowing in shameful feelings is something that a person can do endlessly and never emerge from.

I’m probably mistaken but I always thought guilt was something you feel inside, but shame is something brought to you by others, hence being shamed..thus shame is connected to how a person thinks other people have judged you

Interesting how this is inverted when we refer to guilt-based and shame-based cultures. I.e. Western cultures being guilt-based and East Asian cultures being shame-based, where in shame-based cultures "saving face" is what is primarily required, rather than a personalized feeling of having done wrong, unlike in Western cultures. This seems to be one of the reasons why in interviews, Chinese, Korean and Japanese citizens tend to welcome a more authoritarian approach to policing the public... they outright tend to state that without this extra authoritarian hand there is little "holding people back" from committing crimes or indecencies. Over here it's less about saving face and more emphasis is placed in court on personal guilt and showing remorse for crimes. It's likely also got something to do with the nature of the religions in the West vs those in the East as well and their effect on social customs; there's a marked absence of guilt-based motivations in EA religions/beliefs versus those in the West as a controlling factor of behavior.

I didn't know that inappropriate giult was associated with depression. I feel less crazy now. I have an understanding now, and can relay that to a therapist.

Articulate description. Makes me think of Eriksons stages of development autonomy vs shame and doubt. Never thought about shame much before my supervisor in counseling internship had me prepare a group session on shame. I'll will integrate some of your thoughts as I begin my career as a counselor. Thank you.

What is it when you feel bad about something you can't help, such as your appearance and feel bad about what others might think about you? I thought that was shame.
