Writing a Literature Review in Counseling Research

I watched this video midway through the semester, and I have to be honest, I truly wish i would have watched it the first week. It is a thorough breakdown of how a literature review should be organized. It also helps alleviate some of the anxieties I've had regarding references and finding themes in my articles to use as "fuel" for my manuscript. Nevertheless, this video helped me reorganize my paper more efficiently. Thank you so much!

I like the way that you set up how the literature review is supposed to look. What I appreciate most is that you broke it down in an easy to understand way. By starting off with your topic and then breaking down the topic with supporting detail to make sure it makes sense to the reader.

This video helped me understand what is needed in a literature review. A literature review is basically a compounded summary of multiple journals related to your research topic. This video provided a great explanation.

I am presently writing a literature review, and this video is a great refresher. Dr. Grande offered very helpful tips for organizing the manuscript. I was particularly impressed with the "funnel" design and I am now able to structure my paper in a easier and more professional manner.

Thank you for the video. It reinforced the discussion in class. Some important points that stuck out to me were the idea of being broad but not global, look for a gap in the literature, summarize before the RQ and hypotheses, and offer information that both supports and challenges your study.

I like that the video starts out by explaining what the literature review is even there for. I have written more than one literature review and was not always clear on why it was necessary but this video really lists exactly why literature reviews need to be done. If you follow what the literature review is supposed to do and you are hitting all of those points then your literature review is on the right path. I also liked that it was clearly stated how the literature review should be organized. Watching this video made literature reviews seem less intimidating.

I watched this video as I formatted my paper and it was really helpful. I didn't realize that different journals have the freedom to change things around, so using those as as equal might not be the best thing to do. To have this laid is was informative and a good step-by-step.

This video was a very helpful walk-through as I was generating my literature review. I especially like Dr.Grande's answer to, "how many articles should you have?" It's not the generic, "as many as needed." He takes into account you cannot just keep writing on and on and have tons of information because in the real world there are page limits. You need enough but not more than is going to weigh your manuscript down.

Alicia Zahn I liked that too. We always are trained to think "more is better" but really, good quality articles with the best information extracted is the best way to go here.

I found this to be the most helpful video for me thus far. I appreciated the way he thoroughly explained exactly what is needed to write our literature review. Understanding that this portion of the research proposal is not simply to share relevant research, but to look for gaps within related research that will justify our need/want to further explore the topic. I literally watched this video as I was formatting and writing my paper for research methods. It was so helpful and informative!!! I think I gained the most insight from this video and it was the most practical of all of the videos I have watched for this course. It answered a lot of questions for me that I normally would have emailed the professor about or brought up in class. I have some experience with literature reviews, but it has been some time, so I highly recommend this one for anyone working on their own literature review.

I cannot stress how helpful the whole APA section was in writing this paper and, like you, I've had experience writing a "research article" but it's been a long time. Memory has faded and rules have changed so these videos are valuable for the writing process.

I loved the organizational chart that Dr. Grande included for writing a literature review, and I agree that the funnel approach is very easy to follow. I like that the funnel theory, or broad to narrow approach, also includes elements of the chronological and thematic approach. I think being organized when writing a literature review is essential in order to be successful in writing a great paper. It is important to include all of the necessary details into your paper, and this video helps you to remember what you need to include. I feel more confident with writing a literature review.

Reviewing this video helped refine the content and structure of a thorough literature review. It is made clear that information must be referenced to the original source if the information is included from an author's literature review. In addition, the explanation of how many references are appropriate made it clear that too few would most likely be a problem.

This information is going to be helpful when writing my Literature Review. It has made things clearer for me and I will use this as a guide in the support of completing it. One thing that stood out to me in the video was that it was not uncommon to have 2 or more citations at the end of each sentence. It made sense and I would imagine that it would happen when studies agree collectively.

This was very informative. I learned that literature reviews include results that challenge a proposed study, as opposed to only supportive results. I knew that it was important/vital to locate primary sources, but it may not always be successful. With many documents/articles being online now, I can only assume that it is less difficult to find primary sources, depending on the year that they were published.

Throughout my experiences with psychology, I feel that most educators I have learned from worked under the impression that most people will not go on to do research and therefore, have gone over specifics, like the literature review, very briefly. Many that I have done in the past, were based off little information and not corrected to help my learn the right way to do this. The powerpoint organizes the information in an effective way and helps to put words into a picture of the importance of this part of a article and what it should look like.

The literature review is actually one of my favorite pieces of research. If you are conducting a study or drafting a proposal on something that interests you, you may find that you have already run across many valuable articles or sources related to the topic. It is always interesting to piece them together and compare them to each other. You end up finding that there may be many gaps in the existing literature that wasn't otherwise discovered.
