Heath Ledger was a year older than me and went to school 10 mins down the road from my school. We weren't friends or anything, but I knew him a little - he was a really nice guy, even after he became famous. He and I used to go to the same pub and I played pool with him a couple of times when he was in Perth. Whenever I saw him he was dressed 'incognito' - you wouldn't have realised who he was unless you looked closely. He was a genuine, down-to-earth guy. Very sad death.

Insomnia is really really cruel. At my worst, I really thought I was going mental - absolutely unable to withstand any type stress, exhausted, couldn't think straight and solve problems. This thing can break you apart.

I've had chronic insomnia since I was about 20 years old--and I have never been in show business. When I first got married, my wife misunderstood my problem: For her, not getting enough sleep just meant that one was "tired" the next day--but in my case I get headaches that are so severe that I can only compare them to what people say migraines are like. I hope that you've found some relief since you posted your comment about one year ago.

No matter how hard I try to see Heath in his portrayal of the joker, I just can't, even when they show the joker without makeup I still don't recognize him. The man was a one of a kind and transcended his art to heights that even a full 80 years of life can rarely achieve. I'm always reminded of that saying "A star that shines twice as bright lives half as long".

If he took them regularly then his tolerance would be something to keep in mind. The amount of each in his system is relevant to his tolerance, which is very important to remember. I do wonder if he was adding more meds to sleep and maybe one of those didn’t mix well.

The line about him not expecting to live to an old age reminds me that John Candy had a similar attitude about his life. A profile of Candy would be very interesting I think, he was such a talented actor that made a lot of people laugh, but apparently he felt very insecure about anyone liking him. There's a great story by Roger Ebert about this in his Planes, Trains & Automobiles review: "One night a few years after "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" was released, I came upon John Candy (1950-1994) sitting all by himself in a hotel bar in New York, smoking and drinking, and we talked for a while. We were going to be on the same TV show the next day. He was depressed. People loved him, but he didn't seem to know that, or it wasn't enough. He was a sweet guy and nobody had a word to say against him, but he was down on himself. All he wanted to do was make people laugh, but sometimes he tried too hard, and he hated himself for doing that in some of his movies."

Chet Ripley! Yes, Candy was a good comic character. But just that, and I think they said that was the issue. Too many failures outside of being just a hilarious buffoon. His weight and consumption habits probably had a big input in his ending. Anything even approaching serious acting from him, or just being the lead in a role was terrible, impossible to watch.

I would still argue that the role of the joker and the way he went into that affected him. I've seen pages of his note/scrapbook he made during that to prepare and get into the mindset, the content would affect anyone. On top of that the substance use, the breakup and depressive thoughts, well. A shame. He was great and too young. I was also in Australia when he died. Nationwide tragedy.

He was a a brilliant actor with immense talent. It was almost as if he expressed his alter ego through many of his roles as they were a contradiction to the essence of who he was. Brokeback Mountain was a groundbreaking movie in many ways. The two characters had breathtaking chemistry and the way in which the film explored feelings of love, loneliness, yearning, separation and passion etc. was evocative and achingly beautiful. I was drawn into their complex sexual and romantic relationship that seemed to exist on a soul level. Although the context was a homosexual relationship, it transcended that on many levels. I'm reminded of a quote when I reflect on this movie: "Our souls already know each other, don't they?" he whispered. "It's our bodies that are new." (author?) As always, thank you Dr Grande for your thought-provoking analysis on this amazing actor!

I think Dr. Grande is absolutely correct in concluding that Heath Ledger's modest drug use was meant to control his energy level. I did the same thing for a few years due to insomnia and feelings of chronic fatigue. I feel fatigued whenever I live alone, but having others living with me helps to set my internal clock so that I get more regular sleep.

My heart just completely goes out to him. I've struggled with sleep issues my entire life and wouldn't wish not being able to sleep on my worst enemy. I also am a recovering addict, my primary addiction being opioids and although my sleep issues were not the only reason that I used, they absolutely played a big factor. That is a crazy list of drugs found in his system, esp mixing so many different types of opioids & benzos. Such a sad end for such an enormously talented young actor, but at least we have his work to remember him by.

I really do wonder if he had undiagnosed ADHD, because of racing thoughts and insomnia, use of multiple substances, plus it's often comorbid with (or even misdiagnosed as) major depressive disorder. Unless you experience ADHD, you don't realize how devastating it can be. Not all ADHDers are hyperactive, it really takes a thorough clinical questionnaire and coversations to tease it out.

Dr. G, another excellent summary of a person's life and untimely death. I remember him from several movies I really liked when growing up. And, I know I heard of his death, but I kind of forgot until now. It was interesting to hear about his personality traits that seemed to oppose one another and I can relate to it. Are you familiar with the Jung Personality types - I am sure you are - just hearing about how you described Heath, it reminds me of an INFJ. I could be totally wrong, but that's what it reminds me of. It sounds like he had a lot of things going for him and really struggled with sleep issues and possible anxiety or whatever the racing thoughts were. I would imagine it would be very difficult to be in such an industry if you are a kind, sensitive soul. Sad to hear of his accidental death but appreciate your analysis, as usual. Thank you!

I think jusdging by the Big Five model it may seem like he was an INFJ, but if we go by mbti or cognitive functions, he is an INFP. Also, one thing I've come to understand in terms of personality psychology is that P/J in the mbti system does not seem correlate that much with the industriousness (hard-working, or productivity) aspect of the big five but rather with the orderliness facet. In mbti, it is not necessary the case that Ps are lazier or less productive or hard working than Js, although they are much more likely to be so (that's where correlation comes in).

I clicked on this so quick when I saw the subject of the video! Brokeback Mountain is one of my favourite films, ever! Heath Ledger was absolutely fantastic. His final scene in the film caused me to ball my eyes out! Without him doing too much, the sentiment of that particular scene was so moving. As a method actor, I don't know how he prepared himself for that role, but whatever he did...it was very effective and convincing. You could tell that he put himself entirely into his work. When he passed away, I was truly saddened because there was a very young, talented life snuffed out at a high point in his career, with so much more life to experience. Hi Dr Grande. I find it interesting that the coroner concluded every drug was at a therapeutic level. Ok, however mixing opiates and benzodiazepines in such a large variety isn't theraputic. It sounds like a recipe for unintended consequences. How tragic. I suffer from Full Body Restless Leg Syndrome. The only way I am able to sleep is to combine an opiate with a benzodiazepine. However the array of meds he was on was over the top. What a bummer. Can't a person just be able to get a good night's sleep? Chronic Insomnia is torture. He sounds like a complex guy.

Have you tried Trazodone? It's actually an antidepressant, but I've not known anyone to use it as such. Helps greatly with restless leg syndrome.

@@kavitadeva I've used it for years! Also helps you fall asleep and stay asleep! Yet doesn't make you fuzzy or dopey feeling upon waking like a sleeping pill does!! And is non-addictive (another plus). Isn't RLS horrid?!! Inherited it fm my dad and his side of the family! 😁 Good luck and I'm sure it will help!!

@@redsloane879 hi again! Yes RLS is unbearable. I have full body RLS and when it retirns from time to time it's a literal hell. I am so grateful that you answered my comment. I know for sure my doctor will give me the Trazodone. I used to also suffer from extreme insomnia so this is very promising. I'm actually excited very excited about the prospect of using this instead of the benzo and the opiate. I'm so sorry to hear that you have it too but it sounds like with the trazodone it's helped you tremendously so I'm grateful that you have found an answer. I really miss Hearh Ledger. I was 24 years old when he died. I remember how A Knights Tale changed my life in high school when my life was in turmoil and I was thinking long and hard about committing suicide. But I didn't because Heath Ledger influenced me to always fight to change the stars. Just like he did in A Knights Tale. When he left us in 2008, I spent the rest of the whole year secretly crying and secretly depressed he was gone. I never cried so hard over someone I never actually met. A year ago, my best friend from childhood....who took me to see A Knights Tale and was the only person who cared about me when I was contemplating suicide in high school..... was killed by a drunk driver while living in Florida. Now both Heath and my childhood best friend are gone. But I keep fighting to change the stars, for myself and for others, because I know that's what they both would have wanted me to do.🌠🌌✨ Karen, tell Heath Ledger I still really miss him. I miss both of you and love you both very much. I'll come Home to both of you someday. Now go be guardian angels to someone else who needs you, and I will join you in the stars when I come Home. 👼👼👼

Would be interested in seeing a video on Ethan Couch - the “affluenza teen” who killed four people while driving under the influence. His attorneys argued that he did not know the consequences of his actions due to growing up wealthy with parents who didn’t discipline him. Only time he served was two years for a probation violation years later.

I would like to point out, he was essentially working ,' midnight shift" when working on the Dark Knight. It's hard adjustment to make, you feel tired but wired when awake, it's hard to sleep during the day,ore noise, and even in a dark room the light comes in, and your body is made to be awake during the day and sleep at night. This may have caused some depression. Or aggravated depression. It's a tough shift. There may be more to it, but it's something to be considered. It took me over a year to adjust to midnight s.

I agree, I got sick after a year of it. I just couldn't keep going like that. We are meant to sleep at night except when hormones get involved. The Doctor said it was normal for Teenagers and the Elderly to stay up late into the night and then sleeping until lunchtime.

Shia lebouf bc he is such an artist and interesting and he went off the deep end but now is back and has done interesting things to reconnect like a bunch of off the wall performance pieces and now he teaches a free dram class in south Los Angeles and literally anyone is allowed to attend. He is unique and compelling and interesting. You could put some clinical counseling aspects regarding how he got back to health.

I really loved this. I found myself thinking a lot about Joaquin Phoenix who played the next joker after seeing ther film. I think he and Ledger were friends? But anyway, what struck me was the fact that they both played the role of the joker in a much darker portrayal than in previous films. Method acting seems dangerous to me. If they were friends I wonder if that sadness impacted on the role played by Phoenix. I think his joker was additionally, so very sad. There was also another of their band of friends that died young but I think that was drug abuse. Not sure though they were all friends. Phoenix, his brother? And Ledger? And Johnny Depp? I might be imagining that. Anyway, another excellent study. Thank you

Not sleeping makes you panic. Especially when you have to be up for work in the morning. I can't even imagine having to play a part. Dr. Grandre, you are brilliant for not jumping to the racing thoughts being bi polar. At the time of Heath's death I had psychophysiological insomnia. When you are desperate for sleep you will try anything. :(

I definitely think Natalie's drowning was a drunken accident due to her mixing alcohol and sleeping pills (or sedatives). There may have been a domestic dispute going on, but I don't think anyone assaulted her.

His death was a hard one for me as I met him on 3 occasions and actually got to speak to him on 2 of those.. I knew that the role of Joker was difficult for him to bounce back from. I understand that need to sleep as well and you can overdue pills because you get so frustrated. Same for Michael Jackson.. He is seriously missed.. This video is great. Thank you as always, Dr. Grande. Heath was a treasure, we’re lucky we had him for as long as we did. Quick side note: not a conspiracy theory, there is evidence/confessions from witnesses showing that Marilyn Monroe did not commit accidental, or “probable” suicide, as her autopsy allegedly showed (since you mentioned her here). The coroner, Dr. Naguchi, wanted to have a second look at the evidence after his initial statement, but then the evidence went missing. It’s a sad story but not suicide. A lot of strange stuff was reported that night, but couldn’t be proven until years later. There’s a movie called Marylin Monroe Declassified that was recently added on YT, check it out if you’re into her (Dr. Grande did a nice piece on her, as well!)

Very very suspicious the maid called Olsen, I forgot hearing about that. Very sad. Seems to me like his cause of death was covered up. Thank you for your hard work and interesting videos. I trust you are getting sufficient rest doctor. I sympathize for those who heavily medicate without knowing why. I ran out of cigarettes, and the stress caused me to relapse into marijuana after being sober for almost a month. Good news is, it's been 23 days since I had a smoke! Cold turkey as it were. And 5 days since weed. I'm feeling ready to try to phase out of it again. The cigarettes I'm confident I can stay away from now. Weed is more difficult. I simply cannot be around it. If I have it I would smoke it all day if I do not work. Going off it sends me into a depressive psychosis. Being on it makes me dumb lazy and shallow (though content). I never thought I'd be addicted, and it definitely changed my life. It all has to do with the people around me that I love, that opened the door. Alcohol is easy to for me to avoid. After watching relatives disappear or shrink because of it. If I buy it I will likely consume it. But I can resist buying most of those things and keeping them out of the house. I'm trying to take care of myself, and distance myself from my bad influences and their problems. Part of that is lots of time alone, meditation, and education. I need insight into psychology and why I am how I am. I am fortunate my manic phases are minor. It's very rare I do anything illegal or life endangering, and I'm getting better as I age and know myself and the sources to my emotions better. It's still not easy to resist the depressive phases. But I know part of what can cause them, and that is some control I have. It is still difficult making the right decisions to get out of it. And the energy mania brings itself is very addictive. I can understand the battles these people go through. But I have no desire to burn bright as it were anymore. A simple life seems fine to me. Many of the best things in life are simple. My father was miserable always longing for grandiose things, and let what he had go wasted. I'm closing windows, cutting off drafts until my candle stops flickering. Looking to build a hearth with coals before I try to light the whole room again. I'm no star, I'm a fighter and warmth bringer.
