Apparently, he wrote the song about someone being rude to him and then changed it to a song about romance. Which would explain why the song is mainly focused on his annoyance towards the father and the girl just sounds like an afterthought.

Okay, so the narrative in this song confused me too until I came to the revelation that we're all mishearing the lyric 'cause I need to know.' You see, the father isn't old fashion the way you're thinking. He's REALLY old fashion, as in there is a dowry involved which, I mean really, that's the only reason anyone would be that caught up in the father's opinion in the first place. No one ever actually needed that, it's just a tradition that stems from needing the father's approval in order to get the dowry which was often livestock. "Can I have your daughter, for the rest of my life? Say yes. Say yes. 'cause I need the goat." And that's why he keeps arguing the point with him. It's not like, 'well, I'm going to marry her anyway so that's that'. He's saying, 'Look, we're just going to get married anyway but we're really going to have a hard time of it if you don't lay down the damn goat.'

A word about UB40. Their first two albums are widely regarded as legit AF, and they are multi racial (Jamaican Rasta members). They were broke and unemployed in the deprived and depressed industrial Birmingham in Thatcher's broken Britain. Despite being radical and political, they had had a couple of hits and tasted the blood of commercial success. They lost their edge and embraced the mainstream. Red Red Wine was the garbage that heralded the horrible radio friendly pop reggae phase of their career which lasted til they split, but before they were rich, they were political and wrote genuine reggae protest songs about the evils of colonialism and racial injustice. Their first album, Signing Off, is frankly excellent.

Are we dating and moved in together anyway? Yeah. But would it also be common sense for her parents to get to know me and be happy for their daughter? Yeah. I see the song's point aswell. I was in the guy's shoes (and yours) too. I worked in the same field as them, graduated high school, had my own place, raised very respectful.....but I was black (dun dun DUUUUUUUUN). His parents were super traditional and really wanted a pure bred hmong baby. Lo and behold, I was already pregnant with their first grandbaby. Here is the difference...I made a compromise with his parents. We had a traditional marriage and decided to do the American wedding later. So I do see the fault with this song. You have to compromise with the parents. It's not fair to have your partner choose between you and family if you can help it.

Asking someone for something is giving them permission to say no. Also, some girls (like me) expect a guy to pass muster with their dad, and if he doesn't make the cut, we drop 'em.

I have an excessive dislike of UB40. Most music I don't like, I just shrug it off and say, "eh, it's not for me." UB40 is not one of those acts. I loathe UB40 to the point where it's probably not that rational to get that angry over a dumb band. But I do. I do so much. So, so much. I find their music to be a personal insult to the very idea of music. I don't even entirely know why at this point. They just...ugh. UB40. Why.

Not a bad review, but seriously dude, it takes some real wyteness to call someone named Nasri Atweh "white". Even if he is from Canada.

I think this guy once heard that reggae was associated with rude boys, and he just didn’t care enough to learn what that actually means.

I thought this song was about the actress Mariel Hemingway.

Okay, but the lead singer looks like that one stock image of that bloke in those massive pants and the tophat that's kinda leaping through the air.

You know a song is white as fuck when even white people complain about how white it is.

I think the song is actually about how rude the guy who's singing it is being.
