Theramin: An instrument typically relegated to the sound effects board for anything ancient sci-fi/out there(I.E. anything halloween). I think it's a pun.
@noesunyoutuber76803 жыл бұрын
The Theremin is actually named after its Russian inventor, Lev Sergeyvich Termen (AKA Leon Theremin). He named the instrument the "Etherphone" after its ethereal sound, but it became known as the "Termenvox" in the Soviet Union. That morphed into "Thereminvox" in Germany, probably from some weird German spelling rules. In the US, we shortened it to just "Theremin" and the name stuck. Funnily enough, it was actually pretty revolutionary - it was a mass produced synthesizer in the 1920's! But it's hard to actually play notes with it, so the introduction of electronic organs and other keyboard-based electronic instruments in the 50's spelled the end for its use outside of sound effects. There are some virtuosos who can make it sound absolutely gorgeous (Carolina Eyck is a great modern Thereminist, look her up), but by and large it's a noise generator because it makes fretless instruments look easy by comparison. Thank you for subscribing to Theremin facts!

This song perfectly exemplifies the issue I have with modern Fall Out Boy. Fall Out Boy's songs always had songs with quirky metaphors, but the metaphors in their older songs served a greater purpose by exemplifying the themes of those songs. Modern Fall Out Boy songs have so may metaphors that just make no sense, or don't mean anything just for the purpose of having a Fall Out Boy (TM) song with quirky metaphors. Pete Wentz has gone on record multiple times that he basically just wants to churn out basic, produce-out-of-the-box songs that make tons of money and take no time to make like artists he idolizes in the R&B community. However, this flies in the face of the precision in production that is needed for something as specific and unique as rock and roll. Basically, Pete Wentz is tired of being in a rock band, and it seems like his band mates are just cruising along for the ride. No one in the band seems passionate about what they're doing anymore. The fact that the band has basically gone into hibernation while the other members do their own thing following their latest album cycle seems to support this. That's why I think modern Fall Out Boy sounds the way it does: they're content with living a lazy life of luxury.
@elisenewman28808 жыл бұрын

Uma Thurman lyrics that at least appear to refer to Tarantino films: - "keep you like an oath, may nothing but death do us part" - Kill Bill, either her list, or her relationship with Bill - from lovers to determination to take him out - "She wants to dance like Uma Thurman" - the easiest Pulp Fiction reference - "put your venom in me" - Kill Bill, the Bride is the Black Mamba - arguably the deadliest of snakes - the entire "blood of the lamb" verse is all about Kill Bill, and how at the end they talk about her being a lioness, reclaiming her cub. She also ends up crying and laughing on the floor, which arguably could tie into "I slept in last night's clothes and tomorrow's dreams, but they're not quite what they seem" - personally, I see the moving mountains lines more about the unstoppable force of the Bride - "may death find you alive" - could be the Bride's hit list, or not quite dying in Pulp Fiction Not that you were likely looking for someone doing an analysis of these song lyrics. Seriously though - Todd, I love your work. Thank you for doing what you do and sharing it. I really enjoy listening to and watching your videos.

I remember that song was played on the radio a lot, as well as at my job, but I'm not a fan of Fall Out Boy, except the "Munsters" theme played in the background. When I've heard, it's like my childhood has coming back to me. In addition to that, I used to watched reruns of "The Munsters" since I was a kid back in the 1980's when it was on WPIX-TV (channel 11) during its daytime lineup, and of course, a revived show called "The Munsters Today" on WWOR-TV (channel 9) back in the late 80's, and that theme song sounds kinda cool. Those were Halloween type shows along with "Scooby-Doo" and one of its spin-offs, and then "Casper the Friendly Ghost" which was the cartoon series from Famous Studios which was also Halloween. The song "Uma Thurman" is like a salute to an actress, but why not throw in a tribute song to Maureen O'Hara and celebrated her life. The lyrics doesn't make sense. Castle Films had the problem with inter title cards like you've seen in all silent versions of Ub Iwerks' ComiColor cartoons that Castle Films distributed in the 1940's, and they're still in the Public Domain. These inter titles cards on all of the cartoon doesn't make sense, and that was a decade after the silent era of the 1900's through the 1920's has died.

Todd could review other emo or goth band songs in the future, even if they’re old. Like maybe Welcome to the Black Parade by MCR. That’s Halloweeny kinda. And it’s a meme, so there’s that. Evanescence would be and obvious choice. They’re also a meme.

I never liked Fall Out Boy back in the day, but I've been enjoying their recent stuff, this song included. I haven't been paying much attention to the lyrics in Uma Thurman, it just sounds good. Although "You'll find a way, may death find you alive." is pretty empowering imo.

Man, this song was stuck in my head all summer. Such an earworm! Tom's Diner! Thank you! It's been gnawing at me being unable to know where that sample came from in "Centuries", because I heard the song all the time in the 90s but had no way to source the song since it was still the analog age back then, and I was a little kid. XD Many kids will not know about the Munsters unless their parents showed them that TV show, so they won't know where the sample came from and therefore that part of the song won't leave them questioning. Hooo boy. The Fall Out Boy fans are mostly teenage girls, mostly in middle and high school. Where do the congregate? Tumblr. So you can imagine this is why they behaved so badly over just panning ONE of their songs while otherwise liking the band. That'll be the truly scary thing about this review...mwahahaha! Better board up your house from em...*hands you wooden planks, a nail and a hammer*

yo you're so awesome i subscribed. I search "song review" and your vid pop up. Coz i wonder if there are actually songs review on youtube. I initially wanted reviews for Joe Hisaishi, he's a classical conductor, but i guess you only review pop, too bad. Also, man, i like panic! at the disco than fall out boys.

I feel like the explosion of pop emo came as a result of At the Drive In. Whenever I hear bands like 30 Seconds to Mars, Hawthorne Heights, and MCR, I kinda hear a lot of remnants of Relationship of Command. Too bad At the Drive In is a no-hit wonder. Though let's be honest, unless you're a big fan, the only song people tend to know is "One Armed Scissor". It'd be a stretch to put them on one hit wonderland. Idk I feel like there are bands that are soooooo close that deserve a retrospective, but aren't one hit wonders... like Faith no More is only known for 2, at most 3 songs (Midlife Crisis being a stretch), and it'd be cool to hear Todd's opinions on FNM, or ATDI, or something really good that lingered right underneath the mainstream but never hit big.

***** did you live outside the US? Because in the US, they were seriously only really known for Epic and We Care A Lot.
@BassbaitGG8 жыл бұрын
***** yea but that's one station, that's not the general pop culture. There's generally two types of people who know FNM - people who know the 2 or 3 songs I mentioned, and then dedicated fans who know a ton of their shit. Ashes to Ashes and Last Cup of Sorrow got buried with time and only really Epic and We Care A Lot still have a public voice of their songs. I mean they released Angel Dust, one of the greatest albums of all time, and it outsold The Real Thing in other countries, but when I bring up FNM in casual conversation they only seem to know "Epic" if they know any of the songs at all. But the dedicated fans know how much more they have to offer. Shit like "Caffeine" and "Malpractice" and "King for a Day". They're silently one of the most influential bands of the past few decades.

+BassbaitGG 30 Seconds to Mars are fantastic, but the only album of theirs that's emotive hardcore is A Beautiful Lie. Their first album is alt-metal, and This Is War and Love Lust Faith and Dreams are progressive rock. And I do love At The Drive In, and Faith No More are also great.

+BassbaitGG Todd loves 90s alt rock judging by his Janes addiction poster in his room, he even admited it during his Mbop review. I personaly want his thoughts on the 90s rock bands like Alice in chains, Faith no more, Pantera, and Etc...
@RalphLindsen8 жыл бұрын
+BassbaitGG Emo has been a thing since the 90's and emo pop has more connections to the quieter emo bands of the first generation that actually called themselves emo (instead of thinking of it a a ridiculous term/insult) but so much worse. Of all the semi-modern 'emo' bands At the Drive-In is one of the weirder ones, it had very limited pop appeal imho. It's too loud, unhinged and uncompromising. It's not that surprising that the Mars Volta followed afterwards. They are way closer to bands like Drive Like Jehu than modern emo pop. Also, leagues better than all those other bands you mentioned (not even the same ballpark) Faith No More was probably too weird too. It's harder to pin down what kind of music FNM is, they go all over the place (in a good way) which made them harder to give mainstream appeal. I mean, look at the stuff the singer Mike Patton is doing like Fantomas. These bands would never really be mainstream because they didn't water down their sound and did what they wanted to do all the way. I don't think they ever wanted to be mainstream at all. Why the fuck would your follow up bands be stuff like the Mars Volta and Fantomas if you're looking for mainstream appeal? That's probably what made them so good.

I was totally about to judge you just because you made a video review about Fall Out Boy. Not because I hate them (I've been a fan for going on 8 years now), but because everyone seems to hate on them for no good reason whatsoever. I appreciate how you put your points out there in a well thought out way. The comparison to Maroon 5 was a little weird, but it made sense too. Just never thought to think of them that way. Not all of us FOB fans are rabid haters of those who dare to oppose. They just happen to be the loudest ones and really that's in every single fandom.

Every time I watch one of Todd's pop song reviews, I start to think that maybe pop music as a whole was better on the average in the 70's, 80's, etc. than it is today. Not being ornery, but most of the modern bands I enjoy today seem to draw influence from the stuff I would have enjoyed had I been born 20-30 years ago anyway. Oh well...

This is actually probably one of my favorite episodes. Then again, I also carry heavy favor for music for the early 2000s. :) I'll admit, as much as I ADORE Fall Out Boy, this song carries some of my least favorite lyrics. Still, the music is great and they will likely always hold the spot as my #1 favorite band.

Being in high school, I've realized there are three really big bands to teenagers right now. Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and Twenty One Pilots. Of the three, Fall Out Boy is probably my least favorite because most of the time their lyrics don't really mean anything. I still like them but if I'm gonna listen to a band constantly I'd rather the songs at least have a little more meaning than, "eh, it sounded cool."

Honestly, in the circles I run in, that is the assessment I see, too. Set It Off, MCR, and Weird Al are also prevalent among those I hang with. Everyone else is country, rap, or country rap.

Honestly I'd love to see you review Save Rock n' Roll sometime. Preferably the song, or in a real dream world it'd be excellent to see you review the Young Blood Chronicles that the album spawned. Either one would be excellent, but given your views on rock music in general I think you'd have a lot to say about the title track.

The only similarity between Ima Thurman and the Munsters is that they both use a gypsy scale? Miserlou uses phrygian dominant, and I think Ima Thurman has gypsy minor

Patrick Stump's stuff is honestly the best part of FOB, his solo album SoulPunk is one of my favorite albums. Especially with MaNiA, if you look at the behind the scenes stuff, Patrick talks about all the hooks and extra stuff he wanted to add, but Pete didn't like. And that album turned out to have a lot of repetitive and a bit shallow songs.
