Maroon 5 never go far enough with their title metaphors. "Payphone" only has lyrics that relate to Payphones in the first half of the chorus, and "Maps" only has one, repeated line relating to Maps. Same thing here actually. Why was their only song to carry the metaphor across the song "Animals?" Heck, "Stereo Hearts", the hip-hop song Levine was on that Todd mentioned, has a much better use of its own metaphor.

IDK I feel like Todd missed the joke on this one. The whole cool thing about Mick Jagger is that he has so much confidence and swagger even though he doesn't technically dance or sing well. He became one of the biggest celebrities of all time and got laid a whole lot basically all because of the confidence he had in his "moves". He's the definition of getting by on charisma, finesse and "feeling". it doesn't matter so much that he's a "bad" dancer.

This was written and produced by Shellback (partner of hitmaker titan Max Martin, who co-wrote so many recent hits that it doesn't even make sense to name some), Benny Blanco (co-wrote for early Kesha and many more) and Ammar Malik (also quite a few big tracks he has contributed to). The way I see it, Moves Like Jagger is the start of the deterioration of Maroon 5's artistic integrity. Yes the song is good but after that - their mixture of funk, rock, alternative and pop - is thrown out the window. Yes it was the sellout song...after that - we are pining for them to go back to the Songs About Jane sound.

@@ordinarychef I love a good angst ridden rock tune or even an angry pop song but the boring depression of Billie Eilish or Post Malone is a bit much. Adele makes it work through sheer power and exceptional vocals. It works for Kesha because we know where that pain comes from and she expresses it wonderfully but not so much for the others. Arianna almost sort of kind of pulls it off. My point is that the public is always willing to love a dark tune if it feels real. Very little of the darkness from the last three years does that.

Todd, I know this is going to get buried but I was informed by the frontman of a band big in the Madchester era in the UK that the Jagger references were a method of marketing the Rolling Stones to a younger audience for whom they have no relevance. Selling image rights, basically. He said that the same type of thing was done with Oasis to market the Beatles. One could write that off but Noel Gallagher was their roadie at one point, so it's hard to deny.

Phoenix Werner Have you seen the Rolling Stones logo or googled 'Jagger Tongue'. I took it to be a reference to french kissing.

But why would they would they phrase it like they do then? Also, in the video the dancers are dancing like Jagger.

The Voice isn't a rip-off though. The show is originally a Dutch production America got rights too, and the media tycoon behind it is the son of a famous Dutch singer and the show is a tribute to his dad. There's also a children and recently an elderly edition of The Voice in the Netherlands too.

I remember once at daycare when I was a kid, and somehow this song was put on, but was turned off at some point for being ‘inappropriate’. The justification was the ‘take me the tongue” lyric which confused me. The whole lyric confused me, since I pictured it as a man literally grabbing this woman’s tongue and dancing around with it.

The only thing I can say for this song / video is that Adam Levine is pretty hot in the "dad get off the stage / my torso was caught in a taffy pull an is stretched and weird looking" kind of way. That's it. I hate this song SOOOOO much. At least payphone, for its flaws, still slaps. This ain't got NOTHIN'!

Moves Like Jackson? That sounds a bit more legit..although, Moves Like Feldman on the other hand...I don't think anybody would be wooed over by someone who did Corey Feldman's dance moves, especially not the dane he did when he performed on the Today Show.

You hit it when you mentioned Elvis. There was someone whose dancing lit up switchboards. However, name-checking Elvis the Pelvis is about as effective as mentioning Artie Shaw in your 2020s pop song.

7:51 I don't know if Levine knows this and was making a really oblique reference or if it's just coincidence that he threw it in as a random lyric, but the reason Mick Jagger does those weird exaggerated mouth movements (alternating between duck-face and Joker-grin) is because he was punched in the jaw in a fight when he was a kid and bit off the end of his tongue, so he has to change the shape of his whole face to get certain sounds most people normally make with the tips of their tongues like "L's", "T's" and "Sh's". My dad used to go to a school that had a standing rivalry with the one Jagger went to, and he swore til the day he died that he witnessed this fateful punch during a dust-up when groups of boys from the two schools met in the street. Also, it looks like there were some communication problems with some of the dancers in the video - they asked for "dance moves like Mick Jagger" and got "dance moves like Mick Jackson"...

@MrSilnev

That sounds like such a bullshit excuse. Since obviously he can't say "we made the song to promote the voice". The first problem is that "moves like jagger" is such a throwaway line in the song. He could've used literally any famous singer/dancers' name there and nothing about the song would change. As todd pointed out it's presence is most likely because of the fact jagger rhymes with swagger. I bet that at some point the song did use jagger to rhyme with swagger like "I've got the move's like Jagger, check out my swagger. I've got the mo~ves like Jagger." The usage of Jagger in the song is alot like the usage of Jay-Z in "Party in the usa", it exists to name drop a famous person in your song that has little to do with said person. Speaking of which the other problem is the connection to the stones is non-existent in the song. Not once does Levine mention the rolling stones but he also doesn't even mention jagger's full name. Hell "Dirty Bit" the Black eyed peas song had a better connection to the stones with the lines: "All these girl's like my swagger, they callin' me Mick Jagger. I be rollin like a stone, jet-setter jet-lagger." Not only did they name drop Mick's full name but they also referenced the Stones. The only real connection to the Rolling Stones is the video which shows footage of Jagger at random points. So yeah I don't believe Levine made the song for anything more than a cashgrab at a current trend. Hell history repeated itself as demonstrated with what happened last year with "Anaconda", "All about that Bass" and "Shake it Off". Three songs all cashing in on a trend at the time to some extent.

I mean 2011-2012 seemed to love anything kinda British. One Direction was big and I still remember all those keep calm and carry on templates you could make on your ipod touch. So having a song with loads of UK flags and name checking Jagger seems like they're trying to be a part of all that.
