"I've got you a new job in chicago, east side" seems like the kind of joke you would put in a gangster movie, as a throwaway line, and then at the end of the movie the character gets thrown in the lake with cement shoes, and the people watching go "oh, of course, there is no east side, he meant the lake, it was foreshadowed from the beginning"

I don't think the lyric "she threw the letter away" means that she moved on, I interpreted it as her being disgusted by the attitude towards her boyfriend's "heroism". She told him not to be a hero, and the officials are all like "Your man was a hero! Be happy!" and she was like "Fuck his heroism, he's dead!"
@Jurgan6

My thoughts exactly, she’s disgusted by the hollow patriotism that got him killed. It’s like Dan Olson said when discussing The Wall: “People killed in war don’t ‘die for their country,’ they just die.”

"The Night Chicago Died" is pure 70s kitsch and operates on a non-American 7-year-old's understanding of mob violence, based on silver-age superhero comic books and b-movie mobster films. So yeah, it almost definitely should be in Guardians 3.

Fun fact: "Billy Don't Be A Hero" has 3.7 million spotify streams as of writing. This was a number one hit, yet it has less streams than "What You Want" by My Bloody Valentine (3.9 million streams as of writing), the least streamed song from Loveless. That's kinda wild to me. A deep cut from a band you would never expect to hear on the radio ever is more popular than a song that was once a number 1 hit. It's the ultimate proof of how the only true test of a song's quality is the test of time.

@jmckenzie962
@jmckenzie962 Жыл бұрын
@@calmbbaer Oh definitely. Especially in the streaming era, people aren't as bound by what is or was popular regarding their music taste as they were before the internet where you were stuck with what the radio played. Increasingly, people are now relying on simply what their friends and people on the internet tell them is good. And Loveless, being one of the greatest albums ever made, is thus going to be popular to some degree simply through word of mouth.

100%, my great-grandmother was infamous in my local village as "The Woman you Do Not Sell a Poppy Too - no, no, this woman you ***do not sell a poppy to***" because any attempt to raise funds for the British legion would result in an angry, tearful condemnation of nationalism, war mongering and its on-going legacy. Her brother, my great--great uncle was motivated to join the First World War by the jingoism and public shaming despite being 15. He survived a full year of war and died two days after the Armistice from trench foot, and my great-grandmother never forgave the nation that allowed it to happen, or those who claimed he died a noble death.

ALso, read through that same hateful cynicism of 70's protest songs - it's pretty obvious that Chicago Died is about mocking American conceitedness. The whole point is to say that this shit happens all the time and you would care if it happened in Chicago. It IS an allegory for war, especially proxy war. This is how people acted morally superior before twitter. But, maybe saying "buh whuh? what a weird tone issue, why the kazoos?" and then pretending it all only started with Twitter is easier to digest. That's the issue with sarcasm, if it really deserves to land, it won't, and the thing about sarcasm is if you choose that narrative format you probably don't deserve to be on that high horse where you get to say it. It will be just two abysmally smug sides mocking each other fromt he side of their mouths.

Todd in the Shadows - Here’s something to consider: there was a lot of nostalgia for the twenties and thirties back in the early seventies - The Sting; The Great Gatsby; The Waltons; etc. It would be interesting if you considered how popular nostalgia might explain some hit songs. I’ve noticed that nostalgia tends to set in about twenty to thirty years after the period of nostalgia. The twenties nostalgia seemed to be a little late - probably because the thirties had very little to be nostalgic about.
@zombiedodge1426
@zombiedodge1426 3 жыл бұрын
That co-existed with a huge wave of fifties nostalgia - Grease, Happy Days, American Graffiti (which was set in 1962, but everything before the Kennedy assassination was really an extension of the fifties, kind of like how the nineties as we know them didn’t really get under way until Nevermind came out in late ‘91).

Weird to think the 70s are to now what the (19)20s were to then but I can't imagine anyone treating the 70s the way the 20s was treated in what you mentioned. And I imagine the reason why 50s nostalgia was bigger in the 70s than probably any other "2 decades nostalgia" fad has been before or since is that the 50s was kind of a polar opposite of the 70s as a time of American optimism.

EMI wanted the Beatles to record a Mitch Murray song called "How Do You It?" as their first single. The Beatles did NOT want to do it. Winning that fight was a key moment in the Beatles becoming THE BEATLES, complete with thudding capitals. Minor quibble: there are no kazoos in this song. That bit near the end is the guys singing "nananaa nananaa nana na na naaa" while brass instruments play the same notes they're singing. The distortion of a kazoo has the same dynamic as a saxophone reed, so that playing at the same time as matching vocals give the illusion of a kazoo. It's like if you have a piano and a clean electric guitar playing matching notes, it sounds a little like a xylophone.

So I don't think there _is_ a Patreon tier for it. Not even a secret one. I'm still sad about it, though. Dammit I MISS those! I hope he changes his mind someday.

I feel like there was a 1920s-30s nostalgia thing going on in the 70s (that eventually was overshadowed by the 50s revival), hence the song's rinkytink arrangement and lack of concern for tone. Also it may just have been that the Godfather movies were big at this time so a song about gangsters seemed like it would work.

First of all, super extra bonus points for: "...since Alan a' Dale." Brilliant. Second, I have a memory of this song, from either the summer it came out, or the following summer. My family was on a trip cross country TO Chicago, and that song was on the radio CONSTANTLY. I must have been about 5, and the whole family sang the heck out of it the whole trip. I can't emphasize enough how popular this song was at that time. And then it just disappeared. I don't think I ever heard it again since that trip until I ran across this video.

1974 has a number of songs that are good, or maybe even great. But if you look at the Year End List for 1974, there are basically only three songs that I think one would class as like, fantastic, all time amazing songs: Stevie Wonder's "Living For the City," Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle," and MSFB's "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" (that's the Soul Train theme). Those first two songs were released in late 1973, which doesn't say great things about the year. I would contend that 74 is better than say, 1960, but that's not a high bar. (The best hit song of 1960 was probably Ray Charles "Georgia on my Mind," or maybe Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang")

As a '90s kid whose parents raised me on '70s and '80s music, it's so easy to forget that every decade has bad music. Like, I really love disco music, but that's because I grew up with the good songs. I feel I understand the records burnings now.
@VinchVolt
@VinchVolt 5 жыл бұрын
@@firstnamelastname7244 Indeed you can; and oddly enough, some of the well-remembered songs from an era happen to be the bad or otherwise throwaway ones. For instance, "Take on Me" has a big fan following nowadays, but when you really start to compare it to the rest of the 80s' hits, it sounds awfully generic, as if A-Ha had only just discovered the presets on a DX7 and wanted to fiddle around with them as much as possible, like a kid learning a new big word.

Some new comments on my post of this song brought me here, lol. Mitch Murray admitted on the Songfacts site that the lyrics re: Al Capone were not researched very well and that "The song was certainly a work of fiction, and as such, perhaps we should have used fictional gangster names." Also there IS an East Side of Chicago, but it is more of a smaller neighborhood bordering Indiana. Yes, there were some really cheesy soft pop songs starting in '74. Those and disco ruined the rest of the 70's! Btw, your videos are very entertaining... good job! 😊

Todd and the other publications said that 1974 was a bad year for pop, not for music in general: Zappa, King Crimson, Neil Young, Gene Clark, Eno, Roxy Music, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Syeelg Dan, Miles Davis, Big Star, Sparks, Kraftwerk, Bowie, Deep Purple, Gram Parsons, Tom Waits, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, etc... all released albums that were good to classic.

4:33 Interesting that you mention that Mitch Murray's reputation in the early 60s was as a hit-maker for Liverpool bands who weren't The Beatles, because they almost released a Mitch Murray song as a single as well. Shortly after recording Love Me Do, their first single to subsequently chart in the UK, their new producer George Martin recommended a Mitch Murray song called How Do You Do It? as their follow-up, thinking it would chart higher and more quickly. The Beatles did actually record the song, but were so determined to not be forced to perform that song in future live shows, that it motivated them to write new original songs, in hopes that one of them would impress Martin enough to release one of them as their follow-up single instead. The result was their first UK number 1 single, Please Please Me. Martin would instead offer How Do You Do It? to Gerry and the Pacemakers (the Liverpool band you see at 4:22), and it did peak at number 1 in the UK, but The Beatles were relieved to not be the ones having to perform it constantly in their updated setlist. They probably thought it was too twee for a band that had built up their on-the-ground reputation as a rock n' roll band who performed in Liverpool's smoky cramped Cavern Club, and Hamburg's red light district.
