For your next kiddo, I started “brushing” my babies “teeth” with one of those silicone brushes during bath times starting around 2-3 months. It wasn’t daily and it didn’t have paste on it but it got him used to me putting something in his mouth and I always let him play with the toothbrush after. Then once he started solids I made it a habit to do once daily after big meal of the day. Then once his first tooth erupted (8 months so it was later!) I switched to a soft bristle brush, brushed twice daily, and with paste. We go straight from the breakfast or dinner table to the bathroom to wash our hands and brush teeth! He loves it and I’m 100% convinced it’s because I started him with it early. Some days we forget, like if we eat out but it definitely helped ME starting with a small habit of brushing his teeth and adding on to it because I am terrible at remembering things like that.

Oh the “game” thing is REALLY hard ESPECIALLY when it’s a family friend or family member who introduces it. My daughter’s Aunt came around and started letting her hit her face and was laughing and now she does it to ME! I didn’t realise at the time what was going wrong but now I need to pluck up the courage to tell others not to make certain things a game as it’s us the parents who have to deal with it all day long every day!

I really had a tough time trying to remember daily habits like brushing teeth, vitamins, etc. too. So, I started making a chart for each new habit I had to add to our routine. I just hung it on the fridge and checked it off everyday. After about 3 weeks, the habit stuck and I didn't need the chart anymore. That and pairing the habit with another daily task (like vitamins are always at breakfast) has really helped me adjust to a baby routine.

I think every child throws food! I taught my daughter that starting to throw food - or playing with it a lot without eating it at all, smearing it everywhere - means that we’re done. And it works! She’ll look at mean and throw her hands up and that means we’re done. Sure she still plays with her food and throws some but it’s a lot better. As for the drawers… I’ve babyproofed what she can reach - she’s pretty small for her age still - because i don’t want to deal with locks myself if I don’t need to but definitely keeping an eye on her and a bunch of locks on hand for the moment she realizes she can reach them!

The biggest mistake we've made so far has been trying to cut down my babies' daytime milk after his paediatrician insisted he was drinking too much and not eating enough solids. All that we achieved by that was going from a through-the-night kind of sleeper to having 2-3 bottles of milk/a night! We're only just coming out the other side, but it's cost us a lot of sleepless nights trying to get a hungry 1yo back to sleep 😴

Loved this video! It's great to see parents analyse what they are doing and how they could improve instead of just getting frustrated and annoyed. None of us is perfect and it's so good to learn from each other❤ thank you for this content!

I’m terrible about remembering to brush my sons teeth too! I always feel so bad when I remember

Totally feel you with the teeth brushing. But my son loves it, even tho we forget it most nights. We've started being better the past couple of weeks because ive set reminders on my phone, but have been brushing inconsistently since around 7.5 months (hes 16 months now). Anyway he loves it because i let him play with the brush and 'brush'' his own teeth for the first 4 mins. He mostly just chews on it 😂 and tries to brush my teeth. I model how its done and then take over for the last 45 seconds to brush his 8 teeth thoroughly. And then we practice spitting and he puts the brush away. Anyway it really helps to let him just play with it. Now he reminds me to brush his teeth by pointing to the bathroom and going straight for mamas tooth brush😂 the main point now is to build the habit and make it enjoyable, so i def recommend just trying to get him to like it and being relaxed (but consistent) with it

Motherhood and parenting is a tough job and. I made the same mistake too but we all learn from it. You're a great mom!

Ugh I feel you on the teeth brushing. It’s a freaking ordeal and I wish I just started it when he was a baby baby. Idk why it’s so hard to remember! We keep his tooth brush right at the change table and STILL forget! We’re putting an electric toothbrush and some non-floride toothpaste in his stocking this year and I’m hoping the novelty of it will help 🙏🙏🙏

Please brush twice a day. So many kids with dental caries. It can impact their adult teeth.

This is sooo relatable!! I actually don't give my 13 month old any snacks (although our pedi had recommended 3 meals, 2 snacks + milk daily) unless we are out and about for several hours. I love it because he eats his full meals and isn't constantly asking for snacks. We had a playdate with other kids once and within the hour and a half we were there, they had cookies, raisins, mandarins and granola bars. I was so stressed because I only took water for my son and all of the other kids were eating the whole time instead of playing lol. Snacks are so easy but can be a slippery slope if one is not careful so I try really hard to stay away from them. Also.. YES to the games turning into bad habits! It's so hard to recognize these when your child is being so cute though!! And oof, brushing teeth was hard for us too. I just do it after breakfast and dinner, while he's still in his high chair. That way I don't forget and it's much more effective when you go to brush from behind them!

If it helps any.. we've brushed our daughters teeth pretty consistently twice per day since 6 months old. (Shes the same age as Rook) & she absolutely hates it.

I think most toddlers don't really enjoy brushing. My son hated it at first then I started to sing the Raffi song and he really got into it.

Throwing toys has been a bad one for us - my son is just 1 now. When he first learned how to it was just super cute and we would throw things too, stuffed animals, little plastic balls etc. to make him smile or giggle.. now that he's stronger and playing with different toys it can mean getting a hard wooden car to the face - yikes! I have no idea how to stop it and we still laugh and smile at him when he chucks a stuffy or ball because it IS totally funny haha, but obviously he isn't old enough to know the difference between all the things that can or cant be thrown or where he can or cant throw.

It is developmental. They learn a lot by throwing.

Call me crazy, but I never "baby proofed" for the most part. I just watched my kids. If there was something they were drawn to that I didn't want touched, I would put it up high or away until they were of an age it wasn't an issue. Even for the stairs, I wouldn't use a baby gate but a couple totes that were heavy and full to block the way that were easy for the adults to maneuver but not for the child. Bonus, it saved the walls too.

I started brushing my daughters teeth when she got teeth and some days she doesn’t like it and some days she loves it. 🤷🏼♀️ I’m sure some days their gums hurt more than others.

My biggest mistake that I keep making is couch naps. When my toddler gets up on the couch with me before it's his nap time and falls asleep. Even if it's just a half hour snooze it throws out the whole day and he will refuse to nap at all. The cuddles are cute, but never worth the frustration of the rest of the day. He's grumpy, I'm irritated and can't parent the way I should be able to, and the day ends up full of his screaming.

I kinda doubt that we'll have to baby proof someday (not pregnant) because we've got cats and they get into everything so we already have a bunch of stuff cat proofed lol. In our last apartment, we literally had baby locks on all the cupboards because they'd team up and get into all of them.
