That button assembly could have lasted years and years longer. A small brush (tooth brush) could have removed the light corrosion and then been used to apply a light coat of grease on that metal part to retard future corrosion. You should, of course, not apply any oil or grease to the plastic parts.

What about the inside of the toilet? Mines is new and how does it connect inside of the toilet

Hi Observelearn2345! Normally, you would not have to do anything inside of the toilet. The end of both rods should rest on the flaps of the flush valve that is stationary on the toilet. As you mention that your toilet is new, you should probably have a push button with rods already cut to the appropriate size and already assembled. You would just have to turn or adjust the rods until they touch (slightly) the flush valve. I hope this helps!
