EDIT: FAQ!!
Approx. 69 000 yen conversions:
USD - $680
AUD - $883
GBP - 510
If this seems like a lot of money to you, please watch until the end of the video where I explain why I am ok with that price!
"Where do you store your clothes?"
There is a plastic chest of drawers I have bought that sits underneath the table!
"what's in the cupboard next to the entrance?"
I'm hoping it's a black hole because that's where i put stuff that i want to forget about.
"There are bigger places you could live!"
Yes! If I had a different visa! Please watch until the end of the video where I explain why I am staying in this apartment ^^
"what happens when you bring guys home?"
I don't! hah
"What kind of toilet is that?"
I don't know! I am not a toilet expert but lets just call it secret toilet!
Also I just measured the width of my apartment and it is 114cm excluding the space that furniture takes up! so 114cm at its widest point hahaha
(edit over!)
Hallo frennssssss! I had a day off today so I thought I would make this video and give you an update on how my apartment has changed over the 4 months I have been living here.
I'm happy living here and am not home so often, so it is nice to have my own small space to come and relax in!

Hi! Emma from over 2 years in the future here! Just want to clear up some very common comments: Yup I figured out msg isn't bad for you hahaha This place was expensive, but definitely not the worst deal in Tokyo. Though at the time I had not many options due to my Australian working holiday visa! I now live in a larger apartment for much cheaper and live and work still in Tokyo :) The only thing I miss from this apartment is the cool sci fi toilet, and how quickly the place got warm in winter when I turned on the heater. This place was amazing short term, but the lack of sunlight, location, and size were a bit rough after 11 months haha It was a great experience living there and I learned a lot about myself and how to utilize space and appreciate what I have. If you want to see where I live now I have made plenty more videos during my time here in Japan :) Thanks for watching and enjoy the rest of your KZbin browsing!

@@vantilsley8633 friend you would laugh with me if you saw it. It's 2 small bedrooms, a medium bathroom, kitchen and front room ..it's 1/2 a duplex in a very old, well kept, historic Indiana town. It's considered small and it's perfect for one. I'm within walking distance of (historic) downtown and my lunchlady job at the (historic) highschool. It truly is small. I rent for $650.00 a month and it's all electric...good water, great landlord. I work with ladies who went to that same highschool with him 45 years ago... When in university, I was living out of a 10x10 foot room with a tiny ensuite bathroom. The room had a sliding door that led directly outside. I literally never used the door that led to the rest of the house, because that was part of the rental agreement. It might as well have been a brick wall. Paid $350 per month to the family that lived there, which included wifi and parking. I bought my own mini-fridge, microwave, and toaster oven. I wouldn't have changed a thing! At that time in my life, I didn't need space, or luxury. It's certainly an experience, though!

I thoroughly agree. There is a time in our lives when the adventure of living in a new culture and new language is more than the place where you put your head down at night. The apartment itself will be one of the experiences she from her time in Tokyo.

Designing tiny houses is a bit of a hobby of mine, so I was kinda surprised that a Japanese apartment couldn't manage a bigger fridge. Obviously, I don't mean full-size, rather ones with a proper freezer compartment that are in between a normal fridge and a mini in size.

Speak for yourself pal. I may live alone, but I needs my two living rooms (one formal, one family,) my four car garage, my dining room that can seat ten (even though I never have people over) the cathedral ceiling in my en-suite bathroom, and my jacuzzi tub that could easily accommodate four people.
@TheOneG36
@TheOneG36 4 жыл бұрын
it is small, that does not mean that it is efficient, the thing is there is a lot of space wasted in this "Appartment" i mean, the closet right from the door good be es high as the room and bigger, which would gain a lot of space, same over the Door perfect place for another closet, or even hanging stuff there because the roof from the bedroom is in reachable height. but yeah the Bathroom could not be more efficient, same for the Kitchen, both reminds me of Vanbuilds a saw and used ;) Still 100€/qm2 seems quite pricey even on a mountly contract including utility.... But yeah here in Munich it is also not cheap so i know that feeling to pay extra for a own small 20-30qm2 room for 800-1000€ over a similar sized room in a shared flat/house for 600, with other people you have to life together....

I am a US citizen living in Mexico. When I first moved here I did not speak the language and could not read my mail. I met my neighbors by walking up and down the sidewalk asking anyone outside if they spoke English. I found a guy who spoke a small bit. I asked him what my mail was. He explained this is the water bill, this is electricity... Paying bills here is trippy. You don't do it on line and you don't write a check and mail it. I asked how to pay my bills but his English was not good enough to explain. First six months was quite the learning experience! I have a drawer that I throw stuff in that is more Spanish than I can read. If it is a bill I am expecting it and already know. Anything else I put it in a drawer and I always plan to take it to my neighbor but by the time I do it is months and months old.

if you really want place like that you could probably fit bookshelf in the loft level... just move matress a little from the wall and on the whole lenght you could squeez really shallow shelves ;) and big books under the desk or in the genkan you could have shelves above the shoe shelves XD

10:33 LOL That's Spanish Moss! ...Which... oddly enough is neither Spanish... nor moss... hmm. I nearly spit out my coffee when I saw it hanging on your wall, because, where I live, it grows on EVERYTHING, harbors bugs like lice, chiggers and spiders and is generally regarded as dirty. It's not something we like to even touch let alone bring indoors so when I saw you proudly growing it indoors and worrying over it's health, I had quite a good chuckle. LOL I'm positive that your Spanish Moss is clean, though, and it looks SUPER healthy - the brown center is normal - it will do that as the outside mass increases. Hi! This video showed up in my feed this morning, and I wasn’t sure why... then, I watched your video. You are a breath of fresh air and very down to earth and relatable, which is why your video was so enjoyable. No frills, just you giving an honest tour of your apartment in Japan, and sharing the few small side stories (like the drain), it really made the whole video relatable. Loved it. Subscribed, keep them coming. It also makes us Westerners realize how much we take for granted, in that the Japanese are the epitome of efficiency and compact design. My own home is 2100 square feet, and I am filled with useless collectibles and electronics that I never use. Just more to dust and clean. Your apartment is so efficient and has all anyone would really ever need. Great job.

I live in London. I pay £507 per month for a room quite big for my self and with a small patio-space as big as that entrance/kitchen. I share a big kitchen and bathroom... really, people complain about the prices in London. I simply CAN'T.

Lol. No reason to argue. I agree with you. Eventually I will move out of London, but right now, I want to enjoy the Town a little bit more: lots of art galleries around, lots of culture events... that's the most interesting part of London for me.

Apartments in Germany are mostly quit cheap in fact to other countrys... for around 70m² you pay around 500-750€ and around 600-800€ in the centre of citys like Berlin or Cologn so it is quit cheaper than a 500€ apartmanet with 8m² in Tokyo or a 450€ room in London xD

Medina Music I live about forty miles outside London in Kent. I've just got on the property ladder after years and years.My mortgage is £615 a month for a small detached bungalow with a good size back garden and small front garden. Five hundred odd quid for a room in a house is a lot of money!

This is truly one of the OG J-vlogs. I was talking with my mom about how my 17 sq m apartment in Tokyo is small, and then I showed her this saying "but it can get smaller!" Anyone else watching this in 2024?

dang..that's expensive to me considering the size of that place, but it makes sense in the context of the urban location (since Tokyo is a big city it'd be expensive to live in). It's just a culture shock to me how differently people live there.

It's super shit right now. To a depressing extent. It's pretty bad out there. You got groups of young Japanese from 20 to 30 years old living 10 to 20 in one apt because they can't afford anything and can't find any good jobs. Then the jobs they find they are forced to work double shift on a lot of occasions and don't get paid for all of it under the threat of getting fired. There are hundreds of people that are from their early 20's all the way to 50 years old that are homeless and live in the street in tents. It's pretty sad. Japan is one of the countries with the highest percentage of kids committing suicide because of all the pressure their culture and upbringing puts on them. No country is perfect. Especially the united states. So I say this not with hate but with regret and sadness. I always wanted to go to Japan. But, after I saw all the recent documentaries exposing all of this stuff. It made me decide that I am not going to go there until they start changing habits and the government starts regulating businesses more. Corporations and business practices in Japan are out of control. China is another country I will not visit after all the atrocities they do against their own people. Until they fix these things I will sadly never step foot in those countries. Even tho i wanted to go ever since I was a small child.

No worries on the price. Out here in Amsterdam one only get a fraternity room for that price. That price than excludes wifi, water, gas etc. Sounds like a fair price. Especially in Japan, which is not know for being cheap.
