The bit in the Palette MV where Towa is drowning only to be saved by Bibi (her mascot and also the symbol for her fans) is pretty symbolic. Towa ran into drama early on in Hololive that led to her getting hate from the gross side of idol fandom. Her fans, notably including the small English community at the time, rallied behind her and supported her. She's had a relatively small (by Hololive standards) but extremely dedicated fanbase ever since then.

Wow did not know this myself, I dont know alot about anything from before I started watching but I was there when the whole Rushia thing happened so it is very familiar because she also has alot of English fans rallying behind her after her drama, me being one of them.

I honestly took that scene more like Hololive in general saving her from whatever she did before joining. (since Bibi lore-wise is a guardian given to her by her mama, so only came into existence with her character when she joined Hololive. And since the Kenzoku actually don't really have a form except that weird small white figure from her 3D debut)

@@Lux_Aeterna I'm not specifically calling the JP Fandom gross. I'm calling the people who get into harmful parasocial relationships and try to police the lives of someone they don't know gross, and that applies to both JP and non-JP fans.

To add to this -- A lot of JP fans do not like Towa's actual voice, which is why she puts on the higher pitch voice in most chatting streams. Occasionally it will be dropped for like, minecraft when she's sleepy, or in member streams, but JP tends to prefer higher pitch (Luna being an example).

I'm sure others commented, but up until her 3d debut Towa was one of the least subscribed members in Hololive Japan. She has gone through some controversies with having male voices appear on stream on accident and she lied to cover it up. She then sort of had to build her channel up with an audience that was surprisingly half English speaking, due to them rallying around her. After her cover of Error by Niki, which she cried while singing it during her 3d debut, she notably had a stream thanking her fans and getting emotional. Palette was released early 2021, after Towa had reached a half a million subscribers and starting to really hit her stride. Niki, who had praised her error cover, did the instrumentation. Now she's at 1.2 million and still growing. And she gets to have this success as a female vtuber idol while participating in apex tournaments with men and regularly collabing with males. I'm so proud of her.

"Towa Maji Tenshi" or for short "TMT". It means "Towa is really an angel" and this describes her really well, although she personifies as a young devil. ^^ She's not only a very lovely and kind person, but she also has an "angelic voice" you can hear in songs like Palette. Towa is a great singer!

Quick context for Palette: Towa has been open in the past about struggling to make it in the music industry before joining Hololive, even making her voice higher, etc. to fit their mold. So everything before she is led out by the little devil is representing that time in her life. Which is also why she's in her pajamas and has her hair down until that point, then she sees a flash of herself in her main outfit, which I think represents hololive and the community showing her what she could be if she joins them The song overall is a thank you to Hololive and her fans for giving her the opportunity and support to not only live out her dreams and be successful, but to also do it in the way she wants

About the question you asked after Palette - If towa ever felt like quitting Yes, she definitely had a pretty rough start in Hololive. She debuted in the first week of Jan 2020 - the 4t gen. Her Genmates (especially Coco - the yakuza dragon) were doing really well and their channels were growing really fast. Towa wasn't really standing out at the time. It also hurt her that she wasn't the traditional form of cute, and also wasn't quirky enough to stand out (just being cool doesn't help much starting out in the idol circles) - vtubers were still pretty niche back then(early 2020) And the worst part was some drama about her getting help secretly from some of her guy friends while playing online - so the weird Otaku purists didn't want their idols talking to men, others were really annoyed that she lied to cover it up, and even hololive management gave her a 1 week ban for it. EDIT - this is wrong - she took a week break by herself to reflect on stuff. Fallout of this was she lost a huge part of her original fanbase, but received a ton of support from overseas fans (there was a lot of friction in the fanbase because of this) Streaming to a mostly english chat was difficult, but she slowly learnt a bit english. It was no doubt stressful. But she remained strong, decided that she would just do things her own way, and slowly over time she started to get more confident in herself. By this time as more people were exposed to her she got more fans because of her really weird personality (simultaneously cool and dorky). She was pretty hilarious in collabs too. And eventually she started putting out more covers and those did really well too. By the time of her 3D debut and later as a surprise guest along with genmate Kanata for Suisei's 500k subs celebration concert (Start in the Screen) she was considered one of the best performers in hololive by a lot of the fandom. She hit a million subs earlier this year while singing Palette

>even hololive management gave her a 1 week ban for it< Towa talked about the whole incident in a member stream so I probably should say this, but this is not true. According to Towa herself management was totally fine with her just continuing to stream. Towa herself chose to take a break to reflect on what happened. (though of course that wouldn't be known unless you watched that specific member stream in Nov 2020 and understand enough Japanese to understand her. So it's understandable that a lot of people don't know this)

@@Nachtflut you are right! I forgot this! It wasn't just a member stream, she publicly said it in her apology stream too. She said the management were disappointed in her but were still kind and asked her to be more careful in the future. I also remember her thanking everyone who supported her but requesting them to stop saying that she did nothing wrong as she felt she messed up, and so needed to reflect on what she did. I'll add an edit to my comment. Thanks for reminding me.

Yes, yes, yes. I’ve been wanting to see anyone reacting to this whole album, and Raven is the one doing it, this is gonna be a good one and a half hour to watch Edit: 19:30, “she is cute but she is a Devil”we even have a chant for that, TMT = Towa Maji Tenshi (Towa is truely an angel) Edit: Palette is composed by one of her favorite composers Niki, which she has covered before with -Error, so that is one of the reasons on why she can sing with a lot of emotions, if you ever listen to her cover of Error or straight up her 3d Debut ending with Error you can clearly see how emotional she can get. Especially on her 3d Error cover, because she had a really rough time, thanks to fans being enraged because a male voice appeared on one of her streams, her 3d debut was the latest on her gen because she had to go on a break and Error was the perfect way to end what was a big milestone for her 3d Anyone correct me if I’m wrong on this last part, please

I think for "Debi Debi" it's the shortened, cute way of "debiru" which is how Japanese pronounce "devil" "Bibi Bibi" is reference to her lore of her hat who is her guardian pet Bibi. Also in lore is her being a young devil so maybe low ranking/unproven/anything similar which could link to those lyrics of carving her way, gaining followers etc. If you'd like a Hololive talent that is from your "down under" there is Hakos Baelz aka Bae with incredible range. No EP or album (yet) but still has 1 original song and bunch of covers

OH MY GOD THANK YOU Towa is my favourite member precisely because her voice is just soooo low and powerful, I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this EP E: Just finished the video and I loved the analysis as usual, and Scream is just an EP with no misses as you have said! A few things to add: Scream is an album with the overarching theme of empowerment, not just for her but for the listeners too. Therefore, the songs are composed and the lyrics are written to give motivation to whoever listens to them. For Palette, her first original song: It is composed by niki(a vocaloid composer), who is also the songmaker of her most famous cover -Error and later would go on to compose FACT; the two have a long history since Towa's first cover, Brilliant, show her voice with niki's music are a match made in heaven(or perhaps hell?) and niki personally complimented her for singing his songs "which are not made for humans to sing". She has elaborated on her lyric writing for palette before on stream so there are helpful clips for that. For FACT: There is lyric translation in the kenzoku discord but in summary, the lyrics translation you have are different from ours but it is equally, let's say _"suspicious"_. There's a half joking 10 page PDF on how FACT's lyrics fit the theme of scream so I won't go into detail on that once again. Notably in FACT, you see niki's mastery of the time signatures 12/8(and 6/8) in full swing. The8BitDrummer have said Towa's covers all have a "church song swing" and it is exactly what niki's all about: -Error, Hearts and FACT all have niki's signature swing being a prominent part of the tracks' appeal(not to mention Brilliant with an even more unique 8/8). The other composers for the EP is just as good and has some great work before involving in the album, so it's absolutely amazing to see Towa bring them on to create songs for her! Thanks for your analysis and insights once again and I hope to see you go over some covers from both Towa and Suisei!

I love the insights you had with Palette. As you guessed, Towa did have some early struggles at the start of her vtuber career where some of her fans turned on her. But a lot of her JP fans stuck with her and at the time overseas fans started to follow Hololive and gravitated to her. She persevered and finally got her 3d debut and in that event she sang a song called Error by nikki who not coincidentally wrote Palette with Towa. You should check out Error btw. That live version while not the most technically sound performance had so much emotion that its transcendent. So Towa does love her fans who stuck by her and I think this song is definitely her gift to us Kenzokus.

To give you an idea of what Towa is like, one of my favorite Towa clips is her playing Minecraft, and she draws her bow aiming at a dog. So for a few seconds, she's sitting there aiming at the dog, then she turns away and fires the arrow off into the distance. And she's all like "I bet you all were nervous there, thinking I might shoot the dog. Pretty devilish, right?" And her chat replied, "But you didn't shoot the dog." Her immediate response was to say, "I wouldn't shoot the dog! That would be too evil!" So then, the "TMT"s started flooding into her chat. After all, Towa tries to be devilish, but she's too sweet and unlucky. Her pranks often backfire or are too nice to actually be considered mean. She also talks about how she tries to mess with her cat, but fails cutely at that too.

So happy to see you talk about Towa! She's one of my favourite hololive artists after Suisei and Calli. I've been a metalhead all my life and Towa's music comes closest to that genre in all of holo. Or so it was until this month, as Okayu released her album, containing a certain song that's even heavier than My Roar ;) Here's hoping you'll analyse Okayu's LP at some point too -- it's incredibly diverse musically: it's got heavy stuff, it's got happy-go-lucky idol songs, it's got electroswing/j-rap stuff composed by Calli's friends from FAKE TYPE. All sorts of things. And Okayu herself has a fantastic range, befitting all of these and other styles. She has that "dirty" (or as a certain holomem loves to say: spicy) element to her voice too, like Towa. Anyway, back to Towa -- won't repeat others' comments about the drama she went through at one point. Just gonna add that the "Error" cover she did in the aftermath of all that was so good that the original composer, Niki, was like "ma'am, it's your song now". Now imagine this -- she was actually super insecure about her voice at one point, believing it's too deep and unfit for an idol. We're so lucky she didn't give into those doubts in the end and we're here now. You might want to check out her live cover of "Unravel", as well as her live duets with Okayu ("Cynical Night Plan", Towa also has a studio version of that one with Pavolia Reine) and Moona. She's got studio duets with Suisei and AZKi as well. Both are godly. A bit of trivia: her surname "Tokoyami" can be translated as "eternal darkness" -- that's why there where some lines with that phrase in her lyrics. Due to her kind and sweet nature she's often called TMT (Towa Maji Tenshi - 'Towa is really an angel'); she gets jokingly angry over it every single time, yet her attempt to change that phrase to TMD (...Maji Debiru - '...really a devil') quickly got twisted into "Towa Maji Daitenshi" -- she got promoted to Archangel instead ;D Your analysis was fun as always. As soon as you started talking about the Devil's note, I was lowkey hoping for a nod to Sabbath and I was not disappointed. Looking forward to more Towa and hololive content. As always, I'm hoping for some more Mori stuff. Just recently she's released a new cover song ("The World's Continuation") that marks another step in her massive progress as a singer -- she makes huge strides forward ever since her Lo-Fi EP. Meanwhile her originals are always fascinating lyrically, so since you enjoyed Towa's more introspective tracks, you're bound to find some Calli songs you'll like eventually.

FACT's lyrics are in fact official. The video has the same lyrics play if you have subs on. But the track and how Towa sings feels very seductive, so that risqué style of wording works VERY well. And My Roar (my favorite) is composed by Utsu-p, which if you've never anything about them is a DIRTY composer. Typically uses vocaloid programs for their songs, making heavy metal meant for the Doom soundtrack with cute vocals over top.

only going to talk about My Roar (my favorite, bias since its made by my favorite artist) My Roar was composed and written by Utsu-P!! Who is he? Well he is imo the best vocaloud (vocametal) artist out there, making music from rock/metal/death metal, but not only that his lyrics have deep meaning that are hard to figure some having mutliple meanings. To make his music he uses Vocaloid (voice banks) and he somehow was able to make them growl/scream perfectly for his songs.(Not only that but he also has a band and an idol group) Now into this song, AMAZING, but also I think the "YEAH" part could either be Towa herself or just the generic/basic voice he uses for "backup" vocals. Oh also Towa cute, after watching her usual streams I caught a few here and there but what got me hooked was her Apex streams and watching her in those tourneys made me a fan of her.

That's a great analysis of what Towa expresses with her music. It suits her personality perfectly. She's a very straightforward person who goes for what she wants even when others hesitate. But she also struggled more than others to find her place in the industry, as the top comments explain well. So the whole topic of "establishing identity" is certainly close to her heart. She's determining who she is, no matter what others say.

A lot of people have already brought up how Palette is an emotional song, about her struggles in the early days, but also her determination to keep going with the support of her fans. A little small detail to further reinforce that is if you go to 1:20 in the MV, you can see a glimpse of Towa getting a headpat from a big muscular arm , that reads KENZOKU, being the name of her fanbase. I guess Towa think's highly of us huh? Bibi is her mascot character, but also simultaneously represent Kenzoku as well. Palette remains my favorite Towa, and Vtuber Original simply for my own emotional investment as a kenzoku myself. That being said, Akuma kinda fing slaps. About the TMT thing, it's a meme that's over 2 years old at this point, and Towa herself has grown tired of it, she's okay with it if given the appropriate context, she's quite fond of her devil status. Something that comes up in the translations of the songs, when you see Eternal Darkness, that is what her full name means. Tokoyami Towa 常闇トワ I keep coming back and adding to this as I watch the video, a somewhat reoccurring theme in Towa songs is about her individual expression, and doing thing in her own way, how she wants to and when she wants to. Something like a catchphrase of her's is "My pace" which is essential what I just described. Probably born from both her own mindset and her early days when she was at one point the least subbed hololive member. In fact her second ever cover song was of Black Sheep, which given the title can tell you where her mental state was at the time. That cover song also her an english translation if you're so inclined, it's also probably the deepest Towa singing you will hear. Of course being so early Towa's skill aren't as polished, this was when she was only self-taught.

If 10 years ago somebody told me Utsu-P would collab with an idol company I would have called them crazy. Let the crazy times keep rolling, I guess. Sounds like he really enjoyed himself working on it, too.

It's tough to choose, but I think Towa has to be my favourite singer in Hololive. I love how emotionally resonant Towa's singing is. I'm always impressed on a technical level by Suisei's performances, more so than any other singer in Hololive, but it's Towa's singing that really makes me feel.

AKUMA is my favorite song on the scream EP, makes me really happy that you went on such a deep dive on that song. it's composed by Surii/Three, who is a well known vocaloid producer and also my favorite vocaloidP XD their songs are always really good, and they really played to towa's strengths with AKUMA

1:16:00 I'm pretty sure that's meant to be "Bob" as in "bobcut" rather than "POV", and that those are all common hairstyles, continuing from the previous line about "tategami" which is like an unkempt mane of hair. As I understand it those two lines are being said by other people telling her to conform because having a tategami is lame and she should get rid of it and wear these other popular hairstyles instead, to which her reply is that if everyone wants to fly then she'll throw away her wings and run on the ground instead. A declaration of non-conformity, essentially.

At 46:00 you ask if you can buy Towa's hat. Well, yes, you _could_. She sold it as merch for her first birthday celebration in 2020, when she was still a bit of an underdog. (Although the physical version doesn't have the little horns.) As far as I know it's a rather sought-after piece of merch now, on the second-hand market. I'm wearing it right now.

i was just listening to this album again at work. i was beyond excited when Towa announced Scream. wish i had bought the album myself but i loop the dern thing on spotify quite often. she has an amazing voice and such banger songs. idk when Midnight Runaway was added to spotify, the album was all singles for a good long while before it finally popped up. so i only just heard it. also she just debuted a brand new song at her bday. 3 months ago? dern time flies. can't wait for it too that bit in born to be real about wanting a slow moment with towa vocals and then it happens hahaha XD

While you are exploring Towa's music, I would really love for you to react to her covers of both Brilliant and Error. There is a pretty powerful story behind her cover of Error, and many Kenzoku consider it her magnum opus because of how emotional it was at the time. Will keep an eye out for more Hololive reactions, its really interesting having you comment on time signatures, and "the devils chord" added a new layer to AKUMA i had no idea of. Thanks for the effort in putting these videos out!!

1:03:45 The Lyrics "I'll tell you the name, I'll carve in the eternal darkness" is not as dark as you might imagine. Tokoyami Towa is a name which translate to "Eternal Darkness". So in essence, when those words come up in her songs, it should be considered as a metaphor for her doing a self reference. Frankly, I think the translated lyrics should does not really do justice to that part of the song. It should be written like: I'll tell you the name, I'll carve 'The Eternal Darkness'.

Five of the six songs are done by four well known vocaloid producers. Three, Niki, R Sound Design(Usuge-P) and Utsu-P are the name of the four producers. Three is known for pop rock kind of songs and was responsible for the song Akuma. Niki is known for a softer rock kind of song and able to create songs that invoke emotions, and was responsible for the songs Palette and Fact. Utsu-P is known for his hard rock songs that in my opinion push the limits of vocaloids and rock, and was responsible for the song My Roar. R sound design has this psychedelic rock sound to it and was responsible for the song Midnight Runaway. Anchor is a producer in Jpop that has produced songs for anime not sure about their entire discography though. ANCHOR was responsible for the song born to be real.

Love the entire analysis. Towa is such a great singer, I was first introduced to her singing ability from her cover of Error. Then this album just shock me once more. A fun thing I've noticed is that she seems to have a preference for compound time signature with triplets feels like 6/8 and 12/8, a lot of her covers are songs with those time signatures. Also Bibi, the cute mascot, is the same one she wear as a hat. Bibi can transform into a hat when Towa do her thing.

Glad ya enjoyed Towa's Scream EP as much as I did. It's a common repeat for me on the drive. You're right in that she's an emotional singer. She's still raw in terms of musical control but it comes out and hits you hard. Try her Error cover, a song done by the person behind Palette and FACT, her rendition of it really put Towa in the spotlight. Or better yet watch her 3D debut live version of it. You'll really see her sing her heart out then.

At 21:17 you ask if Towa owns a high rolling casino, and you're surprisingly not that far off the mark. She's remained statistically undefeated for her entire career in best-of-5-games in Clubhouse 51, which mostly consists classic card and dice games, the sort people would hypothetically bet their souls while playing.

I only knew the songs Palette and Fact before this because I mostly only check out the songs as KZbin recommends them, loved them both, Fact being a song I listened to SO MANY more times. Really enjoy hearing you get into the music and explain the music stuff too. Also, I’m not sure if it represents her fans (but I’d assume it does), her little mascot is named Bibi. And debi is another way to say devil. There is also a saying among her fans, TMT; Towa Maji Tenshi, which roughly translates to “Towa is seriously an angel” Really glad you made this video and that I got to find out about these other songs from it

I've watched all your Hololive reviews and I've enjoyed them all immensely so far. Your breakdowns are so insightful and they lead me to enjoy and appreciate the songs even further than I already did. I haven't commented on any of the videos so far because your analysis is so thorough that you take all the words right out of my mouth. I absolutely love Towa's singing voice, it always feels like I'm getting punched in the chest with the sheer power of her vocals. I would definitely recommend listening to her covers on her channel, her cover of -Error is one of my favorites among the 1500+ Hololive songs that they've put out. Lately I've been jamming out to her cover of Cynical Night Plan that she did with Pavolia Reine. (FACT also has a great music video on her channel.) As a little note, her name Tokoyami Towa translates to Everlasting Darkness. You might find this snuck into her lyrics here and there, like at 46:01 1:03:30 and 1:04:59. Another thing to notice is the "clicking" you hear in FACT occurs when she says "Snap for fingers for me" at the start of the second verse.

I absolutely loved The8BitDrummer's story progression with Towa's music; he played along with -Error and made all these comments about it being "worship song swing" and how he'd played this beat all the time in church, then hit Palette with its sorta similar vein of strong emotion...then even later on he went in blind on My Roar and it blew his socks off. Like she was saying "aight nerd, I can be both." EDIT: It's also kinda fun, if you get a chance to listen to Hololive's cover of Ochame Kinou where all of their talents (at the time, minus three that goofed showing up to the recording) sing a line or two of the song...and even with all the other powerful voices mixed in throughout the more average girls, Towa pops out like the rockstar at the talent show.

A bit of elaboration on her personal story that a lot of the EP is in response to, I'll try as best I can to keep this to things she's said on stream as Towa. She has encountered hardship and pushback for things she is and has wanted for most of her life. Her style, the sound of her voice, her choices in music and games, her content. Most of it doesn't conform to ideals a lot of her society expects of her, in particular the sound of her voice, she has been bullied irl and online for how it sounds for most of her life. She grew up pretty poor, worked 3 jobs while trying to put out music on the side. Then her hololive story and acceptance happens as detailed in Palette and expanded upon by other commenters. Even then she's had a lot of growth in terms of her confidence and self-acceptance and has become a strong woman who knows she has something wonderful to offer and is not going to shy away from it anymore as shown in songs like akuma and my roar. Thanks for the reaction and analysis of a wonderful EP.

This is a very amazing deep analysis of the music. It's just sad to me how some of the comments talk about towa past, please her new album is about her wanting her "scream" (voice) to reach people who like her. You don't need to care of her past anymore 'cause she doesn't and Palette to me is the song which she show she is strong now and she will continue reaching for her dream

If you are interested in more Towa originals she has worked with another vtuber called Amane Kanata, who you have analyzed once before, on 3 (5 sort of) originals. The main 3 are on a mini album they made together. The 4th is an original from the hololive company that they sang called “Stardust Song”. The 5th original is from a square enix game where they got hired to be the singers for the main theme song called “Madoromi”. It is uploaded on the official hololive channel so it is sort of their original? Either way even if you don’t do an analysis on them I hope you check it out in your spare time!

I still don't finish the video so I don't know if you noticed this, but everytime in one of her songs its mentioned Everlasting Darkness thats just what her surname Tokoyami (常闇) means, and her name Towa can mean Forever or Eternity Yeah her name literally means Everlasting Darkness Eternal AND I know this has already been mentioned in the comments, but that one shot of her smiling in the Pallette Video is a reference to her 3D Debut, someone screenshot a random moment during her debut that showed her smiling and enjoying her debut after everything that she had to go through, that shot could be said to be a Hightlight of her debut and Towa in general
