It culminated in the Boshin War between the Shogunate and the pro-Imperial forces, where the Shogunate lost.

I'm playing a game w/ Cyrus (Persia) where I started on a small island, I could fit 2 maybe 3 cities on while on the giant land mass nearby had 3 civs the other one had 2. rediculous. I barely made a golden age (Prince difficulty... I know, I don't play for difficulty I don't have fun that way lol) in the last turn since I met denmark (vikings). later on I did my favorite thing and took out his religion early xD so easy to do and sets you up even if your start sucked xD.

Pretty much the two game modes I always use are Barabarian Clans and Monopolies. The other ones are fun but not as essential and more like gimmicks

@@spacetaco2792 Same man. Those two modes just adds a whole new dynamic to the game. Zombies are fun and Apocalypse can really spice up your roleplay, but Barbarian Clans and Monopolies are what should've been in the game from the start.

I love domestic trade routes. I like having 3-4 cities feed into each other and these big cities with all the districs are great to have little cities trading to later when you expand.

***EDIT*** - According to Carl (from Firaxis) the extra Tourism ability that Tokugawa gets to his districts only applies to the cities within 6 tiles of his capital, not to every single district in their empire. TOKUGAWA TIME. I hope you all enjoyed this playthrough of the alternate leader of Japan, once again I'm still getting used to recording games off-stream and editing them so I hope you're enjoying the pacing of these! About the city to “cut in half the island”, you could still get something like that by building a canal in the banana tile close to the capital (where you planned for kilwa). While usually canals aren’t the best district, in this case it would allow your navy to cut in half the entire island (and it’s literally the middle of the island) which is a major strategic advantage, especially because you are between 3 continents, definitely a “busy” area.

yeah I thought about doing that, and maybe doing some IZ adjacency there too. Luckily the island isn't super huge so I don't have to SUPER worry about cutting it in half, but it'd still be nice~

FYI, I believe tribal villages only give era score in the Ancient Era and not beyond. At 29:09, you pop a tribal village, find monkey man, and your era score stays at 29 points. I don't know if this is something they changed in the game at some point, but it sucks.

Tbh ive always liked going Religion First and Go into preserves. My favorite civs are Khmer, Maori and Vietnam. Especially Khmer If you get holy Site adjacency +6 from Tundra on top of holy Sites that are at +6 already from the passive you get 12 food from your holy Site (max i got was Like 19 food from a holy Site) or Maori which synergize insanly Well with preserves. So much fun

I know you're making a joke, but I'm a buzzkill that takes every opportunity for a history lesson. The isolation itself wasn't what lead to Japan's imperialism. It was Japan's copying of _English_ culture. Japan was prime livestock for England to do what they do best; take over less advanced civilizations and exploit them for their natural resources. Japan knew this was the case, and so it's likely they decided to start aggressively industrializing and adopting as much Engkish culture as possible, as well as beginning to invade neighboring , less-advanced civilizations in order to become large enough and strong enough to become a world-stage contender. I'm not trying to take away from the atrocities of Imperialist Japan, but within the context of the world at the time, it makes sense why Japan would go almost immediately from "Only the Dutch may touch us" to "THE RISING SUN WILL SCORCH YOUR LANDS TO ASH"

Something kind of ironic about Tokugawa's reputation is that the policies associated with him are not really his. The isolationism was adopted by his successors in reaction to a peasant revolt led by Christian peasants that led them to fear outside influence. The actual Tokugawa Ieyasu was very open to foreign trade and learning from the outside world that he thought might benefit him. He even built his own trading fleet.

I’ve been watching more Boes to try and improve. I win on deity constantly but always with Eleanor culture and loyalty, so I need to get better for other styles! What do you do when you spawn near an aggressive civ? How do you defend yourself while also not falling too behind?

a lot of the times it comes down to defending yourself and then going on the attack to take some cities away from the AI so you're not going to fall too fall behind. even in those instances your games may be a bit slower, but as long as you can defend and get something out of it you should be ok. i'll try and upload a good game of this, but in the meantime i would watch Potato's Tokugawa game that just came out today!

When I get the time I want to try to play new japan and go for as many dark age isolationist trade route into communism + collectivism science win. I think Ill go no scouts, wonders, and try to kill barbs but not their encampments. With their loyalty bonus,the negatives of a dark ages will be meaningless to me but its probs still not worth it as a free bonus such as free inquiry is better then a policy card like isolationism but I still want to see how it goes maximizing internal routes. Ill need to research what eras the great merchant who boosts internal routes are but I think I plan on producing essentially just military and settlers and potentially builders and markets/lighthouse until I have like 10 cities I think so I can plug in isolationism and not worry. Magnus trade routes of course and I think thats about it.

you can plan in the base game! the 3rd icon on the left above the minimap is called map tacks. BUT I am using a mod called Detailed Map Tacks that allows you to use hotkeys to place them and gives the adjacency/limitaitons for what you're placing!
