The third piece in my new “Tokyo at Night” series that I’m currently painting.
This time I used a photo I took while going shopping late at night with Kana. The bright alcohol shop with a lot of plastic crates and a neon sign caught my eye this time.
Also, I always liked the red (and sometimes green) streets and crossroads that you can find everywhere in Japan and wanted to feature it in this series also.
I used some white, opaque paint for the lighting (window lights, streetlight in the middle etc.) and to add some light blue reflections on the wires.
Technical stuff:
* Paper: HOLBEIN Waterford natural 300g/m cotton paper
* Sketch: Mitsu-bishi Hi-Uni pencil grade HB
* Line: COPIC Multiliner SP 0.5mm
* Colours: my main 48 colour Schmincke set
* White details: Dr. Ph. Martin’s BLEED PROOF WHITE

Nice watercolor work. I love how confidently you mix color and how responsive the paper is. Cotton paper with its "tooth" certainly goes together well with your style.

Hi Mateusz! I just got back home this morning from my trip to Japan. It was more beautiful and wonderful than I could've imagined. I've been following your work for a while well before I knew I was going on this trip, and being able to physically be there struck a cord with me with all the art and media I admire. I spent a lot of late nights wandering around Tokyo myself, and I am rewatching this after my trip and I'm getting emotional because I miss it so much! I'm recalling that before I went I thought this Tokyo at night series was incredibly gorgeous and dreamy, and wow it turned out to really be like that! I love how the peaceful and mysterious vibes are conveyed. Anyway, I am going to rewatch your cold in Yokohama videos now to reminisce my stay in Yokohama the past week (even though it was pretty warm). Thank you as always for sharing your process with us. I'm going to have to rewatch a lot of your videos to deal with my post-trip gloom haha

Emma Mancini take a look at the work of Nitin Singh on KZbin and online. He is from India and paints with cheap watercolor tubes and inexpensive brushes and paper. Watercolor is not as expensive as you might think
@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 7 жыл бұрын
The good watercolor paints, brushes and paper are a little bit expensive but you don’t have to buy them all to start painting ;) even a set of few good brand watercolors, one brush, and some watercolor paper is enough :) I’m using and have all this stuff you see on this channel because it’s my job and I gathered all of it over few years.

@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 7 жыл бұрын
I just do it naturally, I guess it’s just the experience of painting animation backgrounds and watercolors for long time. But if I’m in complete loss at what colors should I use because the current picture is difficult I scan only the lines and try different colors in Photoshop. I’m not using this method on this illustration series though.

Hi, Mateusz! Your watercolor work is stunning and I enjoy a lot these videos where you explain your sketching process. How about experimenting with curvilinear perspective? Have you tried it in your comics? I'd be curious to see something like that from you!

Sweet- and a request..: please (if you do) don't feel like you have to get your videos in under a set number of minutes. I think the folks who enjoy what you do and are eager to see your process get it, excellent work simply *takes time*, so even if you feel you only have a couple of minutes of info to pass along, just a little narration, the 'ok, see you at the end' is more than cool... give these the time they need. ;-) (now of course there's a tech side to how much a machine can process etc... so longer vids may just be a technical challenge, but if it just comes down to video length... ;-) )
@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 7 жыл бұрын
I would really like to make longer, more complex and better quality videos but I’m concentrating on my work :) this channel is still a secondary thing for me, just another channel to show you my work and how they are made. Another thing is that I use time-lapse app on my iPhone to film the process to save space and time when I edit the video to put in on KZbin.

OMg most of the time i use small pieces of paper to draw/paint and when it comes to exams, when i receive those a3 sized art blocks, i tend to only draw on one side, and when i come to realize how much time have pass, i freak out and quick shade the piece, which resulted in horrible shadding. and then i fail :'(

Mateusz, may I ask which size raph kolinsky 8404 brush were u using? I'm thinking of doing of using it to do fine details like you have here (my Rigger Colorpro brush seems a bit hard to control though it can create thin lines). So ya am thinking of getting a size 4 but it seems like yours is a bit smaller?
@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 7 жыл бұрын
The Raphael I use is size 3 but I also recently bought Rosemary &Co Series 33 size 7 and 1 - which sums up to a nice set.

Hey mateusz. That's cool to know. I've invested in a couple of brushes recently - a raph kolinsky size 10 (I know, mad price) and a raph kolin size 3 too haha (cos they ran out of 4!). But I love the 3. Just did a painting with it. Thanks to you and your videos, I've been painting almost everyday , though I've moved away from pen ink and watercolor style to simply watercolors.
