Such a contrast to driving on the freeways through downtown LA - single lanes versus 3+ lanes, visible lane markings, no cracks in the road, storm water runoff that actually works LOL but I see no shoulder to pull over in case of a breakdown??? Then again this is Japan - your cars DON'T break down. I notice very low speed limits as well compared to the 80MPH common in California. This would be a paradise for motorcycle riding - safe, clean, civilized drivers, no potholes to dodge and very well maintained infrastructure. Now I just need my international driving permit, that plane ticket to Tokyo and a Honda Gold Wing rental waiting for me at the airport :-) Of course I won't complain if there's a R35 waiting for me there either :-D Great video! Really enjoyed it.

You filmed this a while ago, I think. Maybe about a year? Why I think this is that in Nishiazabu, at 35°39'32.6"N 139°43'09.7"E, there is now a very tall building, almost finished. But in your video it is barely visible - only the two distinctive cranes are visible. (orange and white colour). Also I'm guessing you filmed in winter, because the shadows are long, even at 1pm (estimated from the angle of certain distinct shadows). Also - I guess that you filmed on a Sunday. Sections of this road feature in an arcade car-racing game. I recognised the corners.

Tokyo Expressway is a superb engineering feat. No where else in this world you can find such wonderful work of artistic concrete structures. Tokyo was flatened during world war 2. Within a hundred years, it has becomed the best cosmopolitan city for people to marvel the wonderful features the Japanese have created. Planing such a creative environment for people to use and enjoy is God's gift. Just look at the free flow of traffic, the road system, lighting, road signs and traffic lights , road markings and of course the viaducts are beautifully planned. Congratulation to the Ministry of Transport of Japan for this sound investment.Road users in other countries like China, Russia, USA, Thailand, Indonesia and other third world countries have become a nightmare. Bad driving is the main course. No proper instructions and informations given to such road users. Half six home -made vehicles are allowed on the road, over loading, sub standard tracks and trailers. It is best to ban all trailers to use the highways for the safety of others. So many accidents had occurred because of bad driving, bad vehicles and impatient attitude on the part of the drivers. The Ministries of Transport of these countries involved are to be blamed for incompetancy. Shame on them and it is best for them to resign. Precious lives and properties could be saved. The big turck drivers behave like hooligans and suffians to bully other road users.

I'm not sure if it's like this in all of Japan, but Japanese expressways seem very slow in terms of the speed limit. In the US, most expressways have a ~110 km/h speed limit (some even faster than that), but normally people drive at 120-130 km/h without much trouble.
@GedMaybury235 жыл бұрын
As noted by others, this is an old expressway squeezed into a pre-existing and very ancient city. If you follow it on google maps, it does some bizarre* twists and bends (*to a Westerner's eye) - but things like ancient royal palaces, temples, and established parklands are *sacrosanct*! The road comes last! Also keep in mind, trying to take the same journey by regular streets during a business day would take 10 times as long. Finally, few private cars in Tokyo. Most traffic is commercial.

The reason why the Tokyo ring roads have such a low speed limit is that they were built decades ago (40+ years) and built very narrow and windy (a lot more than a normal highway). The fact also that there is no shoulder would make it extremely dangerous if the speed limit was higher.
