Not a defective tunnel light, no tag on walls, no trash on the road, no uncut weed, nice asphalte, no traffic jam, no honking, no pothole, others drivers does not seems stressed or aggressive in their driving, no one driving like some idiot, no motorcycle overtaking from all the directions, well maintained infrastructure, awesome view on the city landscape... I could go on more. I am ashamed of the cities of my country and my capital. Be ready guys for the Olympic of Paris 2024. I bet you would get all the contrary to what I just pointed out for Tokyo.

BTW, if you got the chance to go japan for a long trip.... i highly recommend you rent a car and visit the outskirts.... the view outside of city is amazing.... and very stress free.... and there is a lot of R&R station along the expressway/highway..... **don't forget to apply an IDP (International Driving Permit) before you fly to japan.....

The road and side wall markings, different colored road surfaces, and all the warning lights are unique. Probably looks like an airport runway at night. Very clean, no graffiti and very little traffic. I like it very much! Courteous drivers, too! I wonder if all the pavement markings and warning signs/lights make it safer for autonomous vehicles?

Such a contrast to driving on the freeways through downtown LA - single lanes versus 3+ lanes, visible lane markings, no cracks in the road, storm water runoff that actually works LOL but I see no shoulder to pull over in case of a breakdown??? Then again this is Japan - your cars DON'T break down. I notice very low speed limits as well compared to the 80MPH common in California. This would be a paradise for motorcycle riding - safe, clean, civilized drivers, no potholes to dodge and very well maintained infrastructure. Now I just need my international driving permit, that plane ticket to Tokyo and a Honda Gold Wing rental waiting for me at the airport :-) Of course I won't complain if there's a R35 waiting for me there either :-D Great video! Really enjoyed it.

Owning a car in Japan gets taxing what I've read. The inspections owners have to go through every few 2-3 years too check if it's maintained and safe to drive in order to pass to be legal on the road. Many owners trade their vehicle after 7 years as older cars need more maintenance.

You filmed this a while ago, I think. Maybe about a year? Why I think this is that in Nishiazabu, at 35°39'32.6"N 139°43'09.7"E, there is now a very tall building, almost finished. But in your video it is barely visible - only the two distinctive cranes are visible. (orange and white colour). Also I'm guessing you filmed in winter, because the shadows are long, even at 1pm (estimated from the angle of certain distinct shadows). Also - I guess that you filmed on a Sunday. Sections of this road feature in an arcade car-racing game. I recognised the corners.

Tokyo Expressway is a superb engineering feat. No where else in this world you can find such wonderful work of artistic concrete structures. Tokyo was flatened during world war 2. Within a hundred years, it has becomed the best cosmopolitan city for people to marvel the wonderful features the Japanese have created. Planing such a creative environment for people to use and enjoy is God's gift. Just look at the free flow of traffic, the road system, lighting, road signs and traffic lights , road markings and of course the viaducts are beautifully planned. Congratulation to the Ministry of Transport of Japan for this sound investment.Road users in other countries like China, Russia, USA, Thailand, Indonesia and other third world countries have become a nightmare. Bad driving is the main course. No proper instructions and informations given to such road users. Half six home -made vehicles are allowed on the road, over loading, sub standard tracks and trailers. It is best to ban all trailers to use the highways for the safety of others. So many accidents had occurred because of bad driving, bad vehicles and impatient attitude on the part of the drivers. The Ministries of Transport of these countries involved are to be blamed for incompetancy. Shame on them and it is best for them to resign. Precious lives and properties could be saved. The big turck drivers behave like hooligans and suffians to bully other road users.

I'm going to guess that it probably dates from the Fifties - notice the windiness, the low speed limit, and that most it is only two lanes in each direction. I'm also going to guess that this was likely filmed quite early in the morning on a weekend or a national holiday, and that might account for the low traffic.

I'm not sure if it's like this in all of Japan, but Japanese expressways seem very slow in terms of the speed limit. In the US, most expressways have a ~110 km/h speed limit (some even faster than that), but normally people drive at 120-130 km/h without much trouble.

As noted by others, this is an old expressway squeezed into a pre-existing and very ancient city. If you follow it on google maps, it does some bizarre* twists and bends (*to a Westerner's eye) - but things like ancient royal palaces, temples, and established parklands are *sacrosanct*! The road comes last! Also keep in mind, trying to take the same journey by regular streets during a business day would take 10 times as long. Finally, few private cars in Tokyo. Most traffic is commercial.

wow, exits come really surprising. The pre-announcements come very shortly before the actual exit und the exit lane is very short, too. And the signs are full of text. I would have a hard time navigating there.

The expressway signs are notoriously crap, the mixture of Japanese characters and romaji makes them really cluttered, and they can't seem to ever settle on a consistent and unified layout.

Infrastructure wise it looks awesome, very high quality. But what bothers me : it looks like very low capacity and low speed also. It's what I noticed in many Asian cities, like also in Bangkok, the average speed seems very low, like around 40-50 mph instead of 80 mph...

Because there are a fuck ton of trains and subways that go everywhere. A single train can fit the equivalent of several miles of cars in traffic. Otherwise, there is no way these roads can sustain a metro population of 35+ million people.

Well, you could drive fast in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, but you'd have to pick the right highway. Heck, even some of them are favourite racing spots during nighttime.

Thank you. The maximum speed limit of Japan's urban highways is often 60 km/hr(Generally 80km / hr to 100km / hr). Probably, It seems set slower than overseas. German autobahn seems to run very fast. it's great.

The reason why the Tokyo ring roads have such a low speed limit is that they were built decades ago (40+ years) and built very narrow and windy (a lot more than a normal highway). The fact also that there is no shoulder would make it extremely dangerous if the speed limit was higher.

I carefully compared these roads to that of Chinese city Roads. Though Most china city roads are clean, something is a bit off geometry wise.
