Cycling Across Japan Ep.1
We set up our bikes, our cycle touring gear, and set off on our journey across Japan starting in Tokyo. As we reach the outer edge of Tokyo and start to enter into the mountains we realize that Japan becomes more wild and rugged than we expected. We're inspired by the lush forest and beautiful views and we have a good laugh about our first night camping on the road.
We're Zach and Kyle, and welcome to our channel, Earth Runner!
We've been dreaming up a channel where we can document our adventures together, and Earth Runner is just that. With inspiration pulled from yes theory and their slogan and call to action: seek discomfort, we decided to finally start our own channel documenting our journey and our personal growth. Our goal is to connect with the natural world and to discover what it means to live life in a free and fulfilling way. We'll be cycling, hiking, running and so much more in wild places both at home and abroad in pursuit of this goal. We want to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of the places we travel and inspire you to go out into the wild.
Through our experiences we will challenge ourselves physically and mentally, and to get out of our comfort zone while having some fun and lots of laughs in the process. We aim to build a community throughout this journey and we hope you join us in our adventures.
The first video of our series about cycle touring across Japan.
In this episode, we get over our jetlag by eating some tasty food in Tokyo before heading West into the mountains in preparation for Fuji Rock Music Festival and a hike of one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains.

Good video. An interesting coincidence that you met your friend Marina at Midtown, which is where I am fortunate enough to live. BTW, Tokyo has 14 million people, the greater metro area (within commuting distance of the city center) has more than 30 million. But 90-something percent of Japan is quiet countryside.

We were using Maps.Me at first and then it really got us into a bad situation haha (as I was warned it would). So we’re a bit snakebitten and just using driving routes on Google Maps mainly!

Really good job on the video and editing. Btw at 3:55 you are talking while riding - how to you do thie and not pickup background /wind noise?

Hey! Thanks for the comment. As for the wind noice, I’m not doing anything special. Im using a GoPro Hero 10 camera paired with their media mod. This camera just has fairly good noise reduction built in for action shots and movement.

@@EarthRunner I probably will have some :) mainly when it comes to cycling in Japan, otherwise I’ve been there couple of times so worked out a lot of things, but cycling there is yet to come. How easy it is to get by among the cars? I see sometimes it’s not much room. Is it a lot of elevation?

@VagabondTurtle the cars are generally respectful and traffic never seemed to get too bad. The only part of our riding that sometimes felt dangerous were the tunnels, of which there are many. Sometimes there are sidewalks but other times we just had to ride in the middle of the road with our lights on and hold up traffic for a few minutes. And there is indeed a lot of elevation in Japan - we did over 30,000 meters of it during our trip!
