If I was needing a place to stay for over a week but less than a couple months, it would be perfect. I could cook for myself and clean my laundry but no extra services. Would a tourist want an extended stay in that area?

These are legitimately my favorite videos because it feels more realistic than big travel blogs. Like this is clearly a real place that real people stay at. In fact, it's almost like getting a digital postcard from a friend who wants to share their travels with someone who couldn't come along. Which is wonderful :)

I would sell my spleen to be able to spend a month or lifetime in Japan. Lucky for me, I can find youtubers/creators that share their love of this country and the passion for their culture. thank you for sharing I cannot wait till I see your next adventure. I remember the hermit in the mountains - one of my favorites! It was so obvious the amount of work you put into that one. I recall you were corresponding with the only person who could get you to the elderly gentleman. Not just anyone could go there and you could not get there by car. I can see why the process was long, but your hard work paid off! That video touched me and still affects me to this day. I hope you are someday able to do a follow-up on him. As for smaller but still interesting content, it's just great to see an upload from TokyoLens! Thanks for the tour, it's a really cool place! Take care! ❤️

Compared to the spaces we usually see you in... you could've told us this room was Tokyo Dome and it'd be believable, it's practically massive compared to most of them. You can full arm spread multiple times over in multiple directions in that room unlike many of the others where you'd be lucky to get elbow room in at least one dimension.

I think the whole hotel setup is amazing! So carefully thought out with enough shared spaces to compensate for the basic rooms. Clean, bright and inviting. It really makes you think about the amount of wasted space we have in North American housing. It would probably be too confining for some people (and, as you pointed out, there's a potential for head injuries!🤣) but it shows what can be done with small spaces if care is taken in the design and planning. Thank you for the tour. I enjoyed it immensely!. Also, thanks for not blowing off the roof in that wind! I know you want to fly, but that is definitely not the way!😂

There is also a difference culturally that makes this work in Japan and not in the west. The people who use it are respectful on the most part of the place they are staying in, and keep things clean, and aren't going to be causing (criminal) disturbances or drug use, etc... which sadly is what causes low income housing to run down.
@michaelcherry8952
@michaelcherry8952 2 ай бұрын
@@phillydisco Sadly, I think you are probably right. This is not to say that in Japan you find people who do not take care of their surroundings (that happens everywhere) and in this particular case, it's a hotel so people that come here have self-imposed behaviours that are culturally expected of "guests". In North America, there is a sense of entitlement that, in extreme cases, leads to the kind of hotel horror stories you hear about. That being said, I think the model of space utilization would be appropriate for low-income housing, so long as the residents feel that they have a stake in keeping the place in good nick.
@phillydisco

@@michaelcherry8952 The ones in Japan aren't always perfect. My mom used to stay in dorm accommodations in Okinawa when she would be there for months, and while cheap, there would be odd sorts of people. But it also had a female only part, which was good. I also stayed there a few times and didnt see any issues with overall cleanliness, or people getting in each other's way. Even the folks who are down and out or have some social or mental issues and can only afford dorm style living, seem to police each other. Not sure if that also is a cultural aspect. Here, if you even look at someone funny, it could turn into a danger situation, so most just ignore bad behavior or keep their head down.

It may be "wasted space", but we aren't short on space. And I don't think anyone would willing do without a private bathroom at home. If Americans were a little more comfortable with shared facilities, hotels could definitely serve more people, though.

Funny you pointed out the sign. Something I've been meaning to ask is "what's the deal with all the signage in Japan?". It seems like in all the videos every shop/restaurant/transit hub/etc. has a sandwich board sign plus 3 or 4 laminated signs on the windows (along with government stickers like "no smoking"). To me it comes across as cluttered but maybe there's a good reason for it? Ironically, this video has very little signage other than the built in signs on the doors.
