Feldon of the Third Path is the epitome of a rarely seen aspect of red in magic: passion and undying love. He's got one of the best storytelling through game mechanics in all of Magic: he can bring things back from the dead, but only as hollow artifact shells, and they never last. Specifically he costs 1 and two red for a 2 / 3, and then for 2 and a red you can tap him to create an artifact token copy of a creature in your graveyard. It gains haste, but you sacrifice it at the end of turn. As the Commander of a mono-red deck, Feldon has a play style unlike any other, mono-red reanimator with artifact flair, which is a restriction that breeds creativity. Feldon lends himself to a simple plan with a lot of subtlety: fill our graveyard, reanimate sweet creatures, and squeeze every drop of value from them to batter our way to a win.

I feel like he did a bit of a poor job explaining the Sundial of the Infinite Shenanigans so I'll elaborate. You don't just end the turn before the End Step, because the ability will just trigger on your opponent's End Step instead since that becomes 'next end step'. The sacrifice effect is a delayed trigger, so you go to the end step and allow it to trigger, than while its still on the stack, you activate the sundial to end the turn. What this does is exiles EVERYTHING off of the stack so they don't resolve, but because it DID trigger, it won't trigger again on your opponent's turn.

FINALLY! :D Some suggestions for Feldon's 99 which I personally enjoy are Dualcaster Mage, Dire-Fleet Daredevil and Mindclaw Shaman to have ways to interact with the stack. For filling the yard, I also enjoy Dragon Mage and Quicksmith Genius. Perpetual Timepiece can even protect your bombs from the nasty exile zone. Combat Celebrant is a nice card to have, and so is Anger. Heartstone can help with Feldon activations while Krark-Clan Ironworks and Ashnod's Altar are able to make tons of mana with the tokens in MP2 so they aren't totally wasted after combat. And from Commander 2018 I'd suggest taking a look at Reality Scramble and Saheeli's Directive, as both seem rather fun.

Feldon's ability reads that it ends at THE next end step. Wouldn't that include your opponents' end steps?
@TolarianCommunityCollege
@TolarianCommunityCollege 6 жыл бұрын
It says 'next end step', it'll only trigger once: at the beginning of the next end step to happen. You are correct that if you stop the turn before the end step, that end step doesn't happen, so it triggers on the next turn's. However, if you move to the end step, let the sacrifice trigger go on the stack, and then stop the turn, it works because ending the turn includes exiling all objects on the stack, including the sacrifice trigger. Because that 'next end step' has already happened, the sac trigger will never trigger again, leaving you with your token copy. You get to keep the token. Swish!
@g-unithalstensgard5610
@g-unithalstensgard5610 6 жыл бұрын
Tolarian Community College Aww jeez, I didn't even think about letting the trigger go on the stack. Of course you'd be able to exile it with Sundial. My feldon deck is my favorite edh deck I own. Thought I'd mention that Combat Celebrant is pretty strong in this deck as it untap feldon and gives an extra attack step. Celebrant and Godo, Bandit Warlord also go infinite with Helm of the Host, which is a neat little combo package you can run in this deck.

I think we need to clarify a small bit about sundial: You have to activate it in response to the exile trigger. If you end the turn prematurely (say, during main phase 2), there will still be an end step at the next opponent's turn and the creature will be exiled at the next end step (most likely the next player's). If you activate the sundial as the creature is about to be exiled and the trigger is on the stack, sundial will "clear" the stack, then end the turn. The trigger does not occur again, it only happens once.

Prof about Ramp and ETB: "There's not much in the way of creatures beyond that in mono-Red. Enter Dockside Extortionist >:D Technically Soulbright Flamekin is ramp in mono-Red, but it's a very limited ability; you have to pay 6 generic to get 8 red mana. But it works, and it grants select creatures trample. Red also has some interesting ramp cards these days, like Cursed Mirror, Treasure Nabber and of course, Braid of Fire. That last one is really weird. The mana has to be spent during your upkeep, but any deck that has a mana sink would love it! It's a very limited red version of Carpet of Flowers that grows! And they've gotten a certain treasure dwarf that makes treasures when one casts or copies instant or sorcery spells; not bad! Of course, this is all in Red's weird way. They're definitely still lacking, just like White is. White has one of the most insane ramp cards in Commander, but it doesn't help much if that's all it's got. Actually, I would argue White has better ramp than Red these days. We've seen cards that put lands into your hand, there are cards that let you put lands onto the battlefield. There are even a couple cards that will help you catch up on lands to try and keep up with the ones with more land ramp. I'm glad Lorehold had a lot of good cards, so we finally got to see some Boros decks that could actually do a decent job on the ramp. The one deck gets to use Wayfarer's Bauble thrice in a single game!

I used Feldon in the 99 of my Norin group slug deck. I know it's time for him to shine once I have Norin and Purphoros in play. I find a way to discard Bearer of the Heavens, put some haste on Feldon, then just reanimate the Bearer. The rest of the game is just me doing two damage to everyone. This usually happened very late game in my playgroup so everyone who was every victimized just gave up and scooped. Another way I use him is to get a surprise Hidetsugu out once I've placed a damage doubling effect into play. Now I used most of my Norin deck to make a Gisela deck, with Feldon in it to reanimate sweet things like Karmic Guide and Knight of the White Orchid because Boros really, REALLY needs ALL the help it can ever get.

If you have room for it, Panharmonicon is nuts for double a tokens etb effects, since they will be artifacts when he reanimates them as sad robots (because they're dead). And Warstorm Surge. A personal touch in my Feldon deck is Heretic's Punishment. It self mills and deals damage. You can also get some back end damage of Vicious Shadows, but that's a meta call at 7 CMC.

I honestly think you should cover Sakashima The Imposter. He is one of my favorite Mono Blue commanders. You can build him without the iconic lock down control that many mono blue decks share, and instead play a mimicking theft deck with brutal ETB effects. Many people in my play group play hefty mana ramp/ beat down decks, and Sakashima allows me to creatively and mischiefiously take advantage of that and swarm the board with the best cast in play.

I like Feldon decks a lot. They bring a unique sort of gameplay to red and are full of a bunch of tasty flavor, but I cant help but feel excluded. I suppose Slobad, Darreti, and Feldon are all graveyard centric artifact red decks, but Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient is a super fun mono red artifact deck as well. I'd like to see a Kurkesh video at some point in the future, but not right away. Two similar decks one after another wouldnt be great, me thinks.

I’d love to see a video on Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign. I know it’s just Sphinx tribal but I want to know if there something I’m missing in my current build that could be awesome

Hi Prof! I really enjoyed this video - I've been thinking about mono-coloured commanders for a while. It would be awesome to see a guide on a mono green commander deck if you get chance! Removal seems to be a big problem for that but I reckon you might have a few tips up your sleeve! :)

If you add a Phyrexian Altar you can stumble into another infinite with Thornbite and any creature in the grave that produces at least 2 other bodies. If you have something like Impact Tremors or God of the Forge, you just clear the table.

I'm surprised that Dragon Mage and Inferno Titan didn't get any screen time. Dragon Mage is a nice combat wheel and Inferno Titan can hit very had, clear blockers, and has an effect that triggers on ETB and attack. Feldon bringing back the Titan is really fun.

Excellent deck tech. Been wanting to work my way into a mono colored deck, and this one looks like my style of deck. I tried to brew up an Omnath, Locus of Mana, but it turned out very linear. And thanks for the Scion of the Ur Dragon deck tech as well. I win at least once every time my group gets together thanks to the stuff I included based on your list.

this deck looks cool! I never read feldon properly and thought he exiled the creatures from the graveyard. Also I loved the story at the beginning. really makes you appreciate the flavour win. Keep it up prof!!!

if you are running snow mountains, why not run Glacial Crevases? Its a great way to protect yourself in monored. And if you're running that, why not run Crucible of Worlds to get the effect every turn? Especially with a graveyard commander that we'll be discarding to, we can ditch lands early game, and then reanimate them late game when we need to make land drops. and if we're running crucible, we can always run the 4 red fetchlands so that we always get to make our land drop every turn. This also helps with deck thinning and can help shuffle the deck if you have any ideas on how that could be useful in monored

Spitebellows only deals six damage when it leaves the battlefield, so you can't kill a creature and THEN attack, unfortunately.

Daretti was my first commander and is still one of my favorites, but as of recently I have been playing a lot of the Mimeoplasm and the deck just isn't good at protecting it's graveyard. Are there any suggestions for a way to protect my graveyard in mono red or blue, black, green?

I personally think Humble Defector is a great card draw engine for Feldon decks. Copy a Defector in your grave, draw two and sac the token for value.

I hate extraplanar lens there is way too much artifact hate in the format. So many decks run mass destruction to make it worth it. I see more games where a player LDs himself with this card then games where it's beneficial. Plus there are 4 red players in my LJS and two of them run Snow-covered lands and not Lens just because the other two players run Snow-Lens. Eh

Feldon was the second edh deck I ever built, back in 2014. I'm surprised at how similar our lists our, even the eldrazi that you run are the same as mine. Some more great card for this deck, sandstone oracle, tyrant of discord, mindless automaton, and bearer of the heavens if you want to be real nasty

I'd like to see your take on a Vial Smasher deck. I've got a series of deck built around her, which abuse the other partners to flex the deck's color identity. It let's me change up the deck when i want to while still being under the same commander I love to play with. I'm curious to see which colors and partner you think are best for Smasher.
