I can see why it feels off to some people. Kamigawa was just the second block set after Mirrodin to use the modern frame. Meanwhile, Vintage (and Legacy) were the formats for the very old cards. Heck, card around 7th Edition era with the old frame still felt recent back then.

@@LinkEX the kamigawa came out 10 years later as abu roughly. It’s been 18 years since kamigawa roughly. I feel like the issue isn’t that these sets aren’t vintage, because at some point they were definitely considered vintage, it’s just that as that definition gets more and more true, and we feel the need to move the slider to feel og. Let me put it like this, in the next 2 years magic will be 30 years old. That will mean that the difference between og kamigawa and abu will only be 1/3 of magic history.

I think the end was your best monologue to date. It was so magnificent. (Although your monologue about card shops was also really extraordinary). I started playing in Onslaught. Back then, cards were remarkably affordable. Duals were 40 dollars or less. All those sets were so cheap. I bought box after box of Kamigawa, and I always enjoyed every single box of every single set I bought. But I will never have another one though. I will never crack another Onslaught box, or Kamigawa, or even Avacyn Restored. I remember an ex buying me a box of Avacyn Restored on a whim, simply because I said I wanted one, and he had the money. We pack warsed most of the box, but also drafted some of it with a group of our friends, and it was really an amazing experience that I will always cherish. Magic is full of that. It's just full of life history. Thank you for this journey down the rabbit hole of memories. You are an amazing spirit and I truly appreciate what you offer.

I will always have a love for cracking packs of older sets, there was something about them that just felt different compared to newer sets. Buying Mirage, Tempest, Stronghold, and Urza's Block as my first sets back when I was a teenager really primed me to love the experience. Kamigawa block was my first post-college block where I had enough money to buy more than a handful of packs and I bought several boxes worth since my girlfriend got into Magic and liked drafting. Seeing this video brought back the warm fuzzies, thanks Prof! I got lucky several years ago and bought some Eternal Masters from a shop near a friend's house, only to be surprised when I saw they had a couple of old boxes on the shelf - Stronghold, Exodus, and Prophecy... Just seeing this video, and your commentary at the end was beautiful, and conveys some of the 'magic' of the mtg world. Seeing older mtg cards always takes me back to the place in time where I was when playing that given set...very vividly in fact, and also that my best friend (who died about 13 years ago) and I played together, and just seeing a particular card in passing (lord of the pit for instance) immediately brings me back to a particular night where the two of us were sitting in a smoky room in college playing till the wee hours of the night, and his only lord of the pit was in play and he knocked a drink over on it and we feverishly tried to dry it off (and other cards hit)...but going forward, we both knew where that card was in his deck because of the warping and that was ok and hilarious (he would start making ominous noises because yep, it's 3...2..1 card away and I'd be frantic preparing a defense). And so that's also why I love watching your openings and ruminations...because it really is speaking to the magic of it all that we love.

Looking at these cards, I like most of them. Don't know why it was considered such a bad set.
@gankgoat83343 жыл бұрын
@@Grinthex The reason why it was considered a failure had more to due with the Blocks it was placed between, Original Mirrodin and Ravnica. The former was one of the most powerful blocks to come out, so when Kamigawa showed up with more experimental mechanics and lower power levels, most of the cards were never used while the two blocks were in standard together. When the latter rolled in and pushed Mirridon out, Kamigawa was already tainted and Ravnica had a higher power level as well with stuff like dredge. Pretty much a case of wrong place wrong time. The fact that despite being pushed out by two of the most popular sets and still being a cult classic for almost two decades speaks for how much it had left a positive impression. Heck they kinda tried to replace it with Tarkir and it still didn't reduce requests for Kamigawa.

I'm only around half way through this video and honestly i've gotta say it makes me feel sick how expensive these boxes are!! Japanese mythology is fun and samurai and ninja are just cool. I am also half Japanese playing part of my heritage would be cool. Ironically, I wouldn’t get a set based around my father’s Nordic side until recently either but generic European fantasy fits that just as well. The true irony is I am no longer playing the game and probably won’t for a long time and Kamigawa is back. Maybe I will pick up a booster box just to have it.

If you're here commenting I feel like it's fairly likely you'll pick the game up again at some point, might be a good idea. :) Also storing a box away for a rainy day has an appeal to it.

Full of beautiful and at times weird art, interesting lore (evil white legend) as well as so much tribal synergy there. Samurai, ninja, spirits, ogres/demons, snakes, rats... Gameplaywise it was really really fun. Unfortunately, a scumbag I used to call friend back then stole my entire collection (barring like 10 cards I had for trading) AND I became so upset. Nowadays, the cards It hurt me the most to lose were my ninja and Kokusho.

You have to appreciate the Prof's ability to make such simple videos feel meaningful and emotional. It's great how much he loves this game. And his willingness to criticize it might show he loves it the most.

I am in awe that, opening 396 commons from a set with only 115 common cards, you only opened a single Wicked Akuba, but you got one! Just notable to me because Champions standard was when I realized that Green/Black can work really well, due to having Wicked Akuba and Petalmane Baku in my draft deck, and them plus Hankyu is kind of my personal favorite simple one-block combo. And you did get at least one of each of those cards! So it was cool to get that little bit of nostalgia.

Since I just came up with a commander deck that goes infinite with a diving top the idea that it's in a 'bad' set is just so wild to me. Edit: how is the top 60 dollars when I get near mints for 30 euros or less?
@Shadraen13 жыл бұрын
Which set though? Remember it has been reprinted but the original set is worth a little bit more.

Card prices are different accross continents. I guess since people buy and sell in different platforms and few people bother sending overseas, EU and US markets are a bit isolated one from the other.
@Shadraen13 жыл бұрын
Also, I just noticed prices on them seem to have gone up over the last few months (looking at TCG player)
@therindurr3 жыл бұрын
In the US near mint tops are $60. Looks like they're in the $40s in Europe via card trader.

Prices between regions can vary pretty drastically. Singles are usually quite a bit cheaper in Europe than they are in the US.

Thanks for sharing these Kamigawa openings! You just don't see many openings of these old sets lately. With those prices it's obvious why!

classic Kamigawa was the most beautyful set ever. Of course there were nice Sets, but nothing as breathtakingingly unique as the original Kamigawa. And it saddens me that almost all the uniqueness of the Plane got swept away into the new Kaladesh 2.0, or Neon dynastie as the kids say these days :(

For me, opening a booster pack and seeing all that artwork has always been a pleasure. I don't open them looking for a profit or a specific card (go buy singles!), it's almost as if a story is being told with each card that I get. Obviously it's cool getting something that also has a good financial value, but I have very expensive cards that I play with them, instead of just sticking them in glass cases. It's why I never understood people who just by sealed products of a game that they rarely even play... BTW, my first booster pack was a Fallen Empire one! I bought a Fourth Edition core set (at release) and with the leftover money I bought a Fallen Empire pack because it was almost half the price of a 4th Edition one, just because it was an older product...same was true for Arabian Nights and other expansions prior to 4th, no one really understood the value of those older products so they just went for the newer one, while I would usually buy several of those older packs because my 13th year old-mine thought "it's 2 for 1! that's more cards!!!" :D

My college pals and I got back into magic the summer of Kamigawa, drafting countless drafts. I'm sad I ended up getting rid of all those cards and even though I play MTG again now, I don't want to spend the premium to get some of them back, but I'm pleased as punch to play the new Kamigawa and also get this huge nostalgia bomb. Thank you prof.

My first experience of Kamigawa cards were from my buddy stopping at a game store on his drive back from college and meticulously rifling through singles to buy, with the specific target of countering our decks. We were basically playing standard around Shards of Alara with some duel decks cards thrown around. We lived in the middle of nowhere so didn't have an LGS or any people more experienced to expose us to other sets. The moral of the story is not to underestimate the value of an out-of-state education.

I love the culture and history these sets were based on. As a new player the next set will be the first time experiencing cracking some packs of this style and I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the video. Hopefully the next set will have some good value.

The middle and high school nostalgia here! I had a friend with a rough Zubera and Shrine deck that was really tough to deal with. Granted, I didn’t buy singles at that point and he did, so that made things a lot tougher for me!

Kamigawa was the block that got me playing full time. I'd collected since I was 5 but hadn't taken the game seriously until I heard that this Japanese-themed miracle was coming out. I bought out my local Fred's store (all 6 packs). Pulled a Divining Top and a Ryusei that are still two of my favourite cards, today. I remember, on a schoop trip to Europe, teaching other kids to play with a Betrayers theme deck I bought at a shop in Dublin. Not sure if any of them still play but I have that deck still together after all these years.

I'm usually lukewarm on booster back game videos, but the reflections on how magic has changed over time and the impact of high costs of old sets made this particular one excellent. I remember drafting Kamigawa block years ago, not when it was new but when it was an affordable older set. At that time we never thought it would rise this high in value. Back then I think Top was around $5 or $6, and already a scourge of EDH because of how much longer it made games take.

I loved Kamigawa. I was doing my best to put Nodachis on Bushi Tenderfoots, I went to my first and only JSS, I tried to trade for every Higure the Still Wind I could find. So much fun, so many memories.

Whoa. Flashback. When I first played Magic the Gathering for about a year in higschool it was just after Kamigawa rotated out, and a n LGS gave me a box of commons/uncommons from kamigawa. I recognize many of these cards!

Just like the Prof I was on an extended hiatus (getting that English degree 😜) when Kamigawa was in standard. I always loved the aesthetic and wondered why the block had such a bad reputation when it had so many amazing (albeit commander playable) cards and so much beautiful art. Very much looking to be able to play Neon Dynasty now! Thanks for a glimpse at what a draft might look like Prof!
