This whole story is so heartbreaking. If only these prideful people would simply just listen to the wisdom of the elves. If only they'd have some respect for beings that have THOUSANDS of years of life experience. At least 1 family member would have survived. But no.. no it's just too damn difficult for prideful people to take heed of sound advice. SMH. Thank you, Rainbow Dave, for making these videos.. it's been keeping me entertained and captivated for a number of days now. I'm happy and thrilled to have found your channel!

Thank you, 🌈 Dave, for the details you put into the story. Most Tolkien KZbin videos cut a lot out because they want to keep the video short. Tolkien's Legendarium should be not shortened for the convenience of the viewer or the content creator.

The change in Elu Thingol that began in Beren and Luthien and carries on in Children of Hurin makes him one of my favorite elves in Tolkien. The thing is, elves do not change. But character. They mostly don't have clear character growth, especially not in old age. (Sometimes they get darker, like Maedhros, but that's different.) I *despised* him when I first started reading the Silmarillion and now he's just so special to me.

I did not expect to burst out laughing so many times watching this series, but your spectacular treatment of this tragic tale makes it so entertaining! I loved the tirade you went on in the last video after Túrin insulted Círdan. And with this one, it's absolutely hilarious when you just keep on layering one grievance after another on poor Mablung. He simply can't seem to catch a break! Thank you for yet another masterpiece. These videos make life worth living.

About Nienor's name, I think it emphasizes what a disaster the Nirnaeth Arnoediad was. I have a real-life example, a girl I went to school with is called Sarid, which in Hebrew means 'remnant', as in a remnant of the Holocaust. Many surviving families that got to Israel after the war changed their family name to a Hebrew one, and some of them chose Sarid.

This is my favorite story in all the Tolkein legendarium, so I hope that no one ever gets the rights to film "The Children of Hurin" for a movie or a TV series. Peter Jackson may do it justice, but I am afraid that he wouldn't be the one doing it, and whoever does it, will butcher the story. These videos are amazing and do justice to Professor Tolkien's work and to the wonderful and complex characters that he created.

My personal headcanon is that Nienor and Mablung fell in love while she lived in Doriath, and Mablung agreed to follow Morwen partially because he promised the woman he loved that he would protect her mother. Thus one of the reasons Glaurung erased her memories was so that she’d forget her lover and fall in love with her brother instead. This adds a whole other layer to Mablung’s choice to stay with Nienor after finding her under Glaurung’s spell, and to Nienor’s ability to walk for hours at a time while holding Mablung’s hand. And no wonder he spends so long searching for her after losing her.

Aerin and Morwen’s survival should be a trickster fan fiction somewhere…maybe even Nienor gets in on the action of enacting these plans, since she is small and skinny and can fit in tight spaces to exact revenge. Her deftness at finding mushrooms and eggs and whatever else to survive would be interesting to see being used when she is an adult - even with her memory wiped. Nellas could tell us the story…

E. and referring back to the Silmarillion for broader context, as well as listening to the fantastic Audible rendition of it read by the late, great Sir Christopher Lee whenever I'm (frequently) driving, repeatedly and non-stop, which only serves to bring even more depth, breadth, and life to your phenomenal interpretations of this incredible, moving, profound, and beautiful story. You are the centerpiece of it all! What you do with your unparallelled understanding of this material, so obviously based upon years of research into the 12-part History and other texts, would be nearly impossible to duplicate. It's that wonderful paradox in everything the dark lord does. No matter how many people he hurts, no matter how much suffering he causes...the equation is always bent against him, the ending written, his fall is inevitable and each new crime just a charge he must answer for. Pity Thingol's improved character doesn't stick around when it comes to the dwarves and the Nauglamir+silmaril. To be perfectly honest, I think Thingol's improved behavior towards Turin and Morwen vs Beren is mostly because a) they aren't asking to marry his daughter, and b)they are his relatives-by-marriage and he has responsibilities towards them. Thingol is much nicer to his relatives than to non-relatives, at least until they tick him off. As witness the children of Finarfin being the only noldor allowed in past the Girdle. I'm not sure Thingol has actually learned anything. We may just be seeing Thingol carrying out his expected responsibility towards poor relations who may be irritating but are in need and haven't offended him.

It always bothered me that Turin went back to Dor-Lomin instead of following Finduilas. Even without hindsight, I feel like it was the clear wrong decision. His wife and sister had been living in Dor-Lomin for decades under the easterlings by that point--from his perspective, if they were still alive by then, there was no reason to think they couldn't make it for however long it would take Turin to save Finduilas and the captives. The Nargothrond captives were on their way to be taken prisoner in Angband with the DARK LORD; compared to that, some easterlings seem far less dangerous. Plus the captives' danger was far more pressing and time-sensitive. But alas, poor Turin could not make the right decision to save his life :(
@alexanderwerner9294
@alexanderwerner9294 Жыл бұрын
You may be right. Though Glaurung's final words, as Túrin leaves Nargothrond, could be a counterargument. But as he went Glaurung spoke behind him, saying in a fell voice: 'Haste thee now, son of Hurin, to Dorlomin! Or perhaps the Orcs shall come before thee, once again. And if thou tarry for Finduilas, then never shalt thou see Morwen again, and never at all shalt thou see Nienor thy sister; and they will curse thee.' Now we know it's a lie and perhaps Túrin should have seen through it. But he's not rushing home to save his family from the rule of the Easterlings but rather to save them from Glaurung's threat of an invading Orc force. In that case Morwen and Nienor would not live as beggars in Dor-Lomin but would be taken to the Dark Lord, if they aren't killed. And he may arrive too late to help should he attempt to rescue Finduilas first.
@willslawson9675
@willslawson9675 Жыл бұрын
@@alexanderwerner9294 Ah, good catch, I definitely missed that. Still, I feel like the far more pressing danger lay with Finduilas and the captives, who were already taken prisoner and entirely defenseless, while Dorlomin was not yet under attack and had at least a fighting chance.
@Noitartst
@Noitartst Жыл бұрын
Ya think? Turin has an IMMEDIATE duty to Finduilas, and not to his family; what Tolkien is doing is telling the story of a failed knight, a knight who fails to stand up to the dragon, fails to save the princess, and fails the kingdom in general, despite being awesome in any number of metrics. This image is so vivid because it shows something so catastrophic, yet brought about by characters flaws. Yes, the curse doesn't help, exacerbating things, Turin's massive pride is what the Curse preys on. Morgoth's Curse is slow poison, his malevolence posoning the souls of his enemies by degrees, allowing him to destroy them. This Curse, above all, is what demonstrates why Morgoth is such a great villain, and it is his psychological dominance that shows it.

@@NoitartstDo you think the curse is feeding off Turin worst aspects more like amplify them with the wrong choices he made? Could the curse be overcome if he had more humility.

@@jaieregilmore971 Absolutely; if he cast off the stones of his pride, the per the warning of Ulmo the Valar, he had a chance, but Turin, unfortunately, never confronts his ego like he ought to. That is Turin's true tragedy, never recognizing that he is his own worst enemy, neither Glaurung nor Morgoth.

Great work as always, Rainbow Dave! Only a little note: I think Dor-lómin is pronounced with the emphasis on the accent. No paragraphs of comments from me unlike last time 😅

And there's a few plot holes in the story - like why couldnt turin rescue whats her name first and then go to his mum and sister? But i suppose it was because he was under the dragon's enchantment, plus the morganth curse. Also morwen deciding to go to Doriath when she did for no good reason? But if theyre cursed, how come so many good things happen to them as well? Turin never did become Morgoth's prisoner

Didn’t the elves know that you should never join up with cursed people?? You would think that they would.
