The Monk thing was really early on; he was a young teenager when he entered the Monastery (can you imagine going through puberty and taking a vow of celibacy at the same time!?) and was there until his early 20s. Then he did his national service and took up acting during that time. The building work was his day job to support his (at the time not very lucrative) acting career.

What a nice man he is. I had heard in a documentary a few years back covering the history of the show, that Tom was probably the most despondent of all that had played the doctor and then had to leave. It was reported that after his last scene, he left the stage with tears in his eyes and didn't say one word. How sad it would be to have such a big part of yourself, your identity and soul taken away from you. You will always be MY doctor Tom. Got my love of trench coats, scarves and hats from you. : )

What was so great about Tom Baker is how he brought to the role that sense of combined eccentricity and madness. The voice, the wild hair, the staring eyes, etc. You were never quite sure whether his Doctor was a genius or borderline madman, and he was fascinating to watch because of that.

That's never changed and at 53 I still think he was and will always be the best Doctor. I had the privilege of meeting him when I was 18. He was in Glasgow doing a play. Thete is always a high risk of disappointment when you meet your hero. This couldn't have been further from the truth meeting Tom. Not only was he so nice in person he also sent me a couple of hand written letters and signed photos. I even got a thank you note for the whisky I gave him. He will always be my number one.

+Proton1 I have been watching Tom's episodes recently and Tom's Doctor definitely wasn't 1 dimensional or happy all the time. His Doctor may have literally been as dark or darker at times then any other Doctor. If you watch episodes like "Seeds Of Doom', "Robots Of Death'", "Mask Of Mandragora" (where he let's some innocent party goers die in order to save everybody from the villian) he not only yells at the bad guys but his own companions. In Tom's last season especially everybody says Tom was much more brooding and had a darker feel to his Doctor. That is one thing I have noticed, now that I have been watching his episodes, is that the 4th Doctor could deceptively complex. God bless.😀

I totally agree! Even though I respect the other actors who have played the role, and like some of there interpretations, Tom Baker nailed the character of the Doctor soooooooo perfectly. He was the most natural and believable in the part for me. Plus he had the right balance of alieness, charm, wit, humor, sex appeal and physicalness to make me never think I was watching an actor in the role. Your awesome Tom and some of us have not forgotten your love and respect for the character of the Doctor and your kindness towards the fans. Your a class act all the way Tom.

+Stefano Pavone I am one one of those rare fans who actually doasn't totally dislike Sylvester. Thought he had some interesting moments. I do love though how well Tom brought out the alieness of the Doctor but showed the influence humans had on him. I also felt a wonderful complexity to Tom's Doctor. He could be funny, charming, witty and cheeky one moment and then be really angry (even snapping at his own companions at times), moody, morbid and slightly depressed feeling (his final season was a great example of that). Tom also had a slightly flirtatious feel with a couple of his companions. But anyway that's only my opinion. God bless.😀

There were two actors to play the Doctor that were not just playing, but really WERE the Doctor. And that were William Hartnell and Tom Baker. Troughton, Pertwee, they played excellent, too, but for them it was just a role.

Every time they have an anniversary it's the same age I turn that year being born the year it began broadcasting. Tom baker was my Doctor, and I stopped watching after he went until the reboot. I still hear that voice and go back in time.

I was at a convention. They very swiftly put together a memorial presentation about her, which I thought was nice.

I thought of this guy when Elisabeth died The only thing I could think to make me feel better was Well...at least Jon (the third doctor who died in 1996) will be happy to see her again... But I cried because I liked Jon as well.

+MJ Fairytale I think this guy has a name which is Tom Baker. Sorry....I'm not trying to sound mean and obnoxious. It's just funny that you used Elizabeth's name and even called Jon Pertwee by his name but on this video featuring Tom Baker you referred to Tom as just "this guy". If you don't like Tom that's cool.

Frank Skinner (Mummy on the Orient Express!) once said that he had outlived anyone whose death he would cry about. Then added 'except Tom Baker'.. Tom's not my Doctor - that was Peter Davison - but he was still THE Doctor (not sure how many later generations that calculation works for). When that booming, sonorous voice echoed towards the end of Day of the Doctor... "You know, I think you might..."

I just wish Sarah Jane Smith was still alive because she would've loved this since she was there during the classic who and new who.
