...apart from his three predecessors, ALL of whom were better than Tom IMHO. 🙂
@morsmagne3 жыл бұрын
@@Nuttybott I disagree. The 3 doctors before him were a bit too normal. I believe that Tom Baker was a game-changer because since him, all doctors need to be a bit eccentric. Having an eccentric male hero is a refleshing change from the traditional male hero steriotype - one doesn't often get scientist personalities as heros. This is why the female Dr Who doesn't work - somehow it's not a convincing portayal (I can't imagine her in a lab). It might have worked with a different actress.

fascinating man.... not a single shred of pretence...he even admits..'his' Doctor Who..was 'Tom' ...and I believe that is what made his performance so real ... I was living in Chicago, met up with an old HS friend at a sci-fi convention, and saw a slender curly haired man in a long coat with a colorful scarf. I said "Who's that?", my friends said "Yes", and then they laughed their heads off. It was explained to me about Doctor Who, who the actor was (Tom Baker) and the premise of the show. I then watched it on local tv. After 2 years I moved back to Ohio, but there was no Dr Who show available at that time. No big loss. Then in 2005, Doctor Who arrives in Ohio. If you had cable/BBCAmerica, you could watch it. A big to-do was made over Eccleston so I thought it was a remake of the one I saw so long ago. Imagine my surprise that he was the 9th Doctor, and after some research found out DW started in 1963, and I'd seen the 4th DW Tom Baker. How much I'd missed!

He's right about the nostalgia. I only had ever seen the Doctor Who series, "Robot", in early-'75 and then I put Doctor Who off to the side for the next forty-six years(!). I knew of course the changing of the Doctors over the decades and I heard too of Tom Baker. I found BritBox and subsequently went back to where I'd first encountered Doctor Who and Tom Baker. Reality seemed to waver a little, like the heat-distorted horizon, as I watched the "Robot" episodes. I'd gotten old and Tom Baker was young again. I remembered various sequences of the presentation like I'd watched them just last week; especially the scenes that were filmed/recorded outdoors. I've gotten to see "Ark in Space" and I'm taking my time in really appreciating the ambiance of the episodes which are nearly five decades old. How wonderful to be able to say that we live in the time of Tom Baker.
