I really get Tom's perspective because I feel the exact same way and don't "celebrate" someone or something else if I don't have an authentic reaction to it. If I don't have an authentic reaction to something, I'm not going to fake it for the sake of someone else, because then I'm not really doing anything for them. On top of maybe the person having social anxiety, having to give up their time, their plans to enjoy something else now being thrown out the window, and the pressure to act genuine, for the sake of someone else just seeing that you did something or showed up to something. And then it's like, "If this person didn't do this favor for me, then they must not like me," when that person could be feeling genuinely happy or proud of whatever it is about whatever you have going on, but then you're writing them off because they didn't feel proud of you or congratulate you in the way that YOU wanted? I can understand Bert a little bit, but I hate hate hate when someone gets angry or indignant about receiving something genuine, but just not in the way THEY had in mind. It's awful.

Same. Well kinda. I actually hate my birthday. Imagine a set day of the year where you have to get gifts from loved ones that you really don't need. While remembering all the loved ones that wished you a happy birthday but never will again from your past. Remembering that you haven't made it another year and it's a celebration of your life. But one day closer to your inevitable death and a reminder that even all you have become and accomplished. It's never going to be good enough. Hurry! Blow out the candles! Yay your a year away from another sad day. I love other people's birthdays because you can see the same thoughts silently tormenting them in their heads. But you get to give them a gift that they hate but have to pretend to like. Or that's so good. They atleast for a day forget about the struggles. But remember that maybe you haven't given them random loving small gifts when you thought of them through the year. Only on this one day. The whole thing is pretty twisted.
