SONNY JURGENSEN dismantles Dallas with 4td, 3td & 4td performances including a 400 yard and 300 yard game when they were rare. The Pass Master at work. Vince Lombardi called him the best ever. Unitas said his head wouldn't fit in his helmet if he could pass as well as Sonny. Starr told Jurgensen that the Packers would have won more championships if he had been their QB. He retired as the number one rated QB in NFL history. See Hall-0f-Famers Bobby Mitchell (who was 2nd in total yards in NFL history to that time) and Charley Taylor who was 1st in receptions. Also Jerry Smith who held the career td record for tight ends or decades. Note: the game logs are from pro-football-reference.com, a great site.

Wonderful clips thatmake the case for Sonny Jurgensen as the GOAT. Or as Vince Lombardi once said, "If we had had Sonny Jurgensen at Green Bay, we never would have lost a game."

Sonny had great recievers who were like running backs taking a handoff thirty to forty yards downfield. Beautiful spirals Sonny was the best I ever saw

Both were running backs.... Bobby Mitchell was a running back for the Cleveland Browns before Jim Brown... And Charlie Taylor was drafted as running back....

Mitchell, Taylor and Smith... as good a trio of receivers as any team, ever. 3:34 that route is called a Whip now. Pretty dang creative for the mid 60s.

And they played when receivers could be hit till the ball was in the air--they had to fight their way into the pattern. And much tougher hits were allowed.

Here's a quote from one of the greatest defensive tackles of all-time, the magnificent Bob Lilly: "We were scared to death of Sonny. You could never trap him, he threw the ball too quickly. He could think real fast. He couldn't run real fast, so we didn't worry about that. But he didn't wait around to let the ball go. When we got off the ground to see where the ball was, usually one of the Redskins had is somewhere downfield."

Redskins uniforms during this period (1965-1968) the best uni in all of football - even today! No stripes on the socks, helmet - very simple. But the gold pants and arrow hemets, and the color combination, are drop-dead striking. Cowboys strong on both sides of the ball, but not so with Washington.

@@impassable Not as much as Lombardi would have enjoyed the fact that Jurgenson also led the league in passing yardage those two years. You are cherry-picking stats. What QB has the most career interceptions and the most career fumbles? Bret Favre! I don't think Lombardi would have minded having the only QB to ever be named league MVP for three consecutive years.

Sonny must have had a great time during his career, slinging the ball to these great receivers. Had their defense been more consistent, they would have been a title contender. And, greatest NFL uniforms of all time. Other good unis: Chargers, 1966-'73, 49ers, Broncos, '68 - '96 (some subtle changes during this era) Saints, 1967-1969, and Falcons (black jerseys/red striped helmets,) 1966-'70.

A lot of times he didn't have all those great receivers due to injury. Sonny shares the record for longest TD pass - 99 yards - a completion to no-name Gerry Allen. Flea Roberts was another receiver Sonny had to make do with. His offensive lines were mediocre and he had running backs no one remembers.
@tommythomason6187

@@garfieldfarkle Their running game wasn't great, but I'm not sure it was because of the line. I mean, Len Hauss, Ray Shoenke, Vince Promuto, John Wooten - there were others up front and they were great, IMHO. Gerry Allen was a running back, I think.
@garfieldfarkle
@garfieldfarkle 3 жыл бұрын
@@tommythomason6187 The line always had a couple of glaring holes in it till George Allen redid the whole line with John Wilbur, Walt Rock, Terry Hermeling and Paul Laaveg. Len Hauss was a premiere center, Schoenke and Promuto were very good. But that's 3 out of 5. The running backs were mundane, at best. A.D. Whitfield? Bob Brunet? They didn't have a really good ballcarrier until Larry Brown. That's why they put Bobby Mitchell back there sometimes.

@@tommythomason6187 Oh yeah! Pairing him with Charlie Harraway was a great move. From time to time when I look at salaries today it reminds me when the 'Skins got Roy Jefferson because he wanted $100,000 and the Colts only wanted to pay him 90.

Yes, but the flip side is all those times the pass goes out of the frame, etc. Because the camera work was so inferior it takes away from the appreciation of the quality of the performance.

Frank Santore: Perceptive comment, you know your Skins.. The Skins fg kickers were 7 of 25 for 28%. Sonny had one of the NFL's greatest season's, even with a poor defense, and a rush attack that was 2nd worst in the league, and the worst fg performance in modern history. He reset his NFL yardage and completion records and became the 2nd QB to have two 30+ TD seasons. With no rushing threat, teams just teed off and came at Sonny. But he led the NFL in Passer Rating and had the lowest interception %! He kept the Skins in most of their games down into the 4th period. And Charley Taylor, Jerry Smith, and Bobby Mitchell finished 1-2-4 in NFL receptions!

If SEVERAL key Dallas players hadn't been injured for most of the season.... including 1966 MVP Don Meredith, the Cowboys wouldn't have been only 9 - 5 that season..... so the kicker situation in Washington would have been a moot point.🏈😅👍

Jurgensen along with Sam Huff were the radio color guys on the Washington network for many years They were so jovial and carefree and even comical at times . I could see Jurgy as a free sprit but Huff ? who a had a reputation as a pile on late hit in your face guy . Famous for rivalries with Jim Brown and Jim Taylor, and first developed by Tom Landry Huff was seemed so nice . i do not think Jurgy was a type of football player that Allen liked , hence Kilmer . Even Theisman rode the bench until Allen disciple Jack Pardee took over . Another thing i noticed about some of the old time players . They were tough SOB players on the playing field but were solid citizens and respectful off the field .
