I met Tom in the early 80's when he stayed over at my Uncles place in Margate (South Africa) - my Uncle was the creator of Country Rhythm surfboards - I still look up to Tom after all these years - "Mate you will always be a legend"

Tom was then, and will always be a hero of mine. In and out of the water. I'm struggling with an alcoholic addiction as I write this. This video was eye opening, awe inspiring. I've lived in denial for too long. As Tom said, to be open. Wish me luck, as Im guna need it. Time to dust off my boards in get back in the water. Thanks Tom

I really appreciate you Tom. Being vulnerable and telling your real story... not a sugar coated social media presentation, but the whole journey is huge. I started surfing during your first World title tour. Legend plus!

Tom was my favorite surfer growing up,,,I was told by many friends I was good enough to go pro,,,but the drugs got me. I always dreamed of surfing again, never knew this about Tom. I'm around the same age as Tom and it's awesome to see he's recovering and is still shredding, addiction is a mutha.

Good luck with your journey. We all have our own path, mine may be more difficult than yours; just as your path in life can be harder than someone else's. You ARE in control of what direction you take. Get in the water again. Let your body lead your mind for a while. Salt heals.

really interesting interview. it seemed like he went deep for those answers, not just some canned response. the most fascinating to me was his phrase "the shark in the human". SO perfectly put. we all have it, as i was just thinking about today.

I'll never forget when me and the bros, 4 big māori lads shot down to a Margaret River classic. Tom Carrol and some other fulla drove past us in town. We followed them so we could meet him. I think they shet themselves when 4 big fullas jumped out of the car and ran towards them when they stopped. He was a good fulla. Had a korero and then blazed off. ✊🏽

Really? I'd think it's because physical beauty is pleasurable to look at, it's uncomplicated. People generally don't seek out reminders that life can be hard, unless they're in need of the acquired wisdom of someone who's been through something that required a lot of themselves.
