When I was a kid, I loved this show!

Finally, after 64 years, I`m watching "Tom Corbett-Space Cadet!" We got our first TV in 1954 when I was in the 3rd grade. I heard about the Tom Corbett TV series, but it was not shown on the one channel we got initially. Santa Claus brought me a Space Academy play set with plastic figures, which caused me to agonize more over not getting to see it on TV. Seeing it now, I`m surprised the production values are as good as they were. That`s to be expected after I read where the great Willy Ley, American-German space science writer, was the technical adviser. At least in Oklahoma, we had the locally produced space opera, "3D Danny" on Channel 4 in Oklahoma City, starring Danny Williams. It was a low budget production, but we kids thought it was great.

I was born in 1971. It's interest to see what came before me. When I was a kid, I would have viewed this television show as primitive, 50 years later it's charming and what I grew up now seems equally primitive. And today, all the new stuff, seems like junk.

Frankie Thomas was a real gentleman, I met him and spent 12 hours listening to his stories in the early to mid 80's. I had a copy of the Tom Corbett book series, and he signed it for my sons, still have it on a shelf. Because the book was a fiction factory style book, and there is no real author, he was the next best thing to having the author sign the book. He wrote: to Ben and Nick, Spacemans Luck, Tom Corbett/ Frankie Thomas. He told some incredible stories (until 2am) about the early years of Hollywood and the kids that were there and working. He was the mayor in BoysTown and later played the male lead in the Nancy Drew series. He retired after Tom Corbett, and wrote a series of Sherlock Holmes books about (his favorite hobby) bridge. He also wrote a newspaper column for decades with Omar Sherif on bridge.

That's a cool story! It was a magical time when society protected the innocence of kids. I think these shows did a lot to inspire young kids to learn about science and become the scientists and engineers who would later work in our space program. This is one of the reasons why I'm so happy about President Trump's Space Force. By the way, ignore Charles Davis. He's obviously a degenerate troll who dislikes anything wholesome.

@Datsun Man thanks for sharing. This business was always a tough one. I liked him as an actor. I only have seen him in the Nancy Drew comedies. He had a lot of presence and a relaxed, authentic way of playing, especially in " ...reporter". I guess Space cadet, although it aged not well, was great for kids. Certainly he had a lot to tell from early Hollywood and kid acting. Professional Bridge expert later on. Clever guy.

OMG. Talk about a blast from the past. This has to be from the early 50's or so. I remember watching this show as a 8 year-old (or so!).

My mother read Tom Corbett, A Trip to the Moon (published in 1953) to me in '59 just before I turned three years-old. I found _the_ book, well preserved, in a memory box of hers that had sat untouched for over thirteen years. Mom had been saving that book all along.

The special effects and sets were primitive, but to us kids, it was all serious and we watched it each week!

Frankie Thomas wrote some Sherlock Holmes novels in the 70s/80s. They were pretty authenic except when Holmes says "Stand by to raise ship" and Watson replies "Aw, go blow your jets". : )

This was actually pretty good. It got the story across with the budget they had to work with. Not only that but when the ray gun was fired in space, produced no beam of light. They got that right science wise. The ray gun wouldn't produce a light beam. Only the flash hitting the target would be the only indication the shot from the ray gun would be successful. Good stuff. The characterization was pretty good as well.

Haha, the stock music at 6:00 was also used extensively by Ed Wood. Funny to hear it used elsewhere.

UPDATE: The episode that amounts to a "continuation" of this episode ("Ambush in Space") is called "The Missing Mail Ship". It's basically a stand-alone episode in its' own right, but if they are watched back to back, "...Mail Ship" will play like a Part 2. Whether or not they aired back to back originally, I'm not certain. Bottom line -- they're both fun episodes, and they're both on KZbin to enjoy thanks to BookLoverFrank!

So how did a group of guys from the old neighborhood in Brooklyn get into space anyway? Did their cabbie take a wrong turn on the way to the Bronx?

If you haven't already, please check out Space Command. It is a current project and some of the pilot has been filmed. They still need funding; so if you can help, please do. You may recognize some characters from recent space shows such as Star Trek's Voyager. This hopeful series is based somewhat on the genre of early space films (reason for title) howbeit with much more advanced technology. The series is aimed at adults, but those adults who may still have some nostalgia for the 50's. Those who prefer the modern space movies will still enjoy it. I am a die-hard Star Trek fan and still enjoyed what they have filmed so far. (Actually there is a little bit of Star Trek flair to it.) Check out the bridge.

OH NO! This appears to be a two-parter, and part one ended in a cliffhanger! There doesn't appear to be a part 2 available on KZbin as of this writing, assuming there was a part 2 ever made. I'll keep checking back and hope for the best. THANKS for part one -- great FUN even if there isn't a part two! Love those ever-improving "special effects"! If they were too good, there would go all the charm of this wonderful early 50's series (right when I was thinking about entering the world)! :-)

18:11 At this point in real life, you would just shoot and kill those three and then go and get the other guy that's still on the docking ship. No need for talking, no need to take it personal, it's just business.
