Remember laying on the carpet and awaiting this program on Sat. As a kid it seemed so cool. This program really was huge for it's time. They made up a rocket, complete with loads of gauges (probably old WWII aircraft gauges) and mounted it on a flatbed trailer and toured the country. I saw it in Fairborn Ohio, perhaps in 53 or 54. As a kid that was a big deal.

As a kid I would have loved to see that too!

Holy crap, had me on the edge of my seat. And that periscope. What would you give for one of those! I was totally into this show in about 1954. Saturday mornings at 10am I think. I was born in '45.

Me too, was a fav show - I had a lot of the merchandise including atomic ring, glow in the dark belt with decoder wheel, ray gun that shot baby powder, periscope, space helmet.

Ed Kemmer, "Buzz", was a fighter pilot during WWII. Shot down, captured and escaped. I met him in NYC in 1975. Great Guy.

I was born in 1951. This is the earliest TV series I have any recollection of. At ager 4 it seems so realistic.

An amazing series. At least in its earliest episodes it was produced live on a local station in Los Angeles. It was so successful that it became syndicated, one of the earliest syndicated television shows. The cast was first rate and the scripts were exceptional. I think I read somewhere that future NASA astronauts were inspired by this series to become astronauts. ...Rowby.

This version of Space Patrol is like watching Flash Gordon meets Buck Rogers ( 1930s ) accept Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers had no adverts built in to it, not to confuse with the real adverts when broadcasted on American TV Channels.

My folks were crop pickers and we didn't even have a TV until '58, but I did have a girlfriend whose folks DID have a TV. I practically lived down there and liked the TV shows much better than I did the gal.

Elements of Star Trek's "Whom Gods Destroy" and "What Are Little Girls Made Of" and just a dash of Grand Moff Tarkin.

I was three years old. I thought when I grew up I would be a captain in Space Patrol. What a let down when Mom told me it was all a fake.

I wonder if I wrote a letter to Space Patrol with .25 cents and Chex.....if I would get a COOL Perascope?

I've wondered that myself with old radio and TV promos. Wouldn't it be great if someone along the way who knew about the show found it! Never mind that the postage stamp for mailing is at leaste twice the value of the quarter!

Another kiddie sci-fi cult classic! Ed Kemper was totally believable as Cdr. Corey.(I wonder what kinds of armaments the Terra 5 has.)

Those periscopes look almost like ABC's mobile cameras from the 1960's.

I heard that they only had a prop budget of $1.75 per episode and used round ice cream cartons for space helmets...

You've confused Space Patrol with Captain Video. That isn't far from the truth about Captain Video.

Does anyone know why the copyright date on this episode (at 0:25) is 1999 (MCMXCIX)? I know that the series ran in the early '50s. Did they accidentally type "C" instead of "L"?
@mikerca5 жыл бұрын
Television show copyrights are only valid for 25 years, then they have to be renewed otherwise the shows can fall into what is called “Public Domain” where anyone can issue copies. That copyright was inserted onto this video and from what I can make out, was issued to “Wade Williams” whoever that is. I’m guessing he owns the series now.
@jsat56095 жыл бұрын
@@mikerca Copyright is a little more complicated than that, because copyright law has changed over time. I don't know where the 1999 date came from or if it's valid. If it was an error at the time it was originally broadcast, the episode might possibly never have been under copyright at all. If the original 26 year copyright was not renewed then the show lapsed into the public domain. A more complete discussion of copyright is beyond my ability and beyond the scope youtube post.
@1L6E6VHF4 жыл бұрын
That superimposed copyright date is also added in video (rather than film) and is in Helvetica font (rare in the Americas before the mid-1960s). This reminds me of the error in the title graphics of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", showing the copyright date MCLXIV, 1164!

Rocky Jones was heads and shoulders above this crap.
@davemitchell1163 жыл бұрын
Why does the title card say "Copyright MCMXCIX"? That's 1999. Wasn't this made a few years before that?
@fuzzywzhe3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, that's at 0:19 - and you're right. MCMLIV I bet is correct. That ought to be 1954, if I can still do Roman numerals.
