I loved it as much as the first time I saw it, and I guess a lot of other people have seen it a bunch of times too because stories are out there that it just passed Titanic and is now the 7th biggest film of all time! Yes from making most of it practical, choosing to go with a good script even when many ppl pitching many stories over the years, delaying due to pandemic convincing the distributors and theatre chains ,going as far as involving his lawyers to stop paramount from selling it to streaming. Each and every decision he took made the movie what it is today and it got the success it deserved

I’ve seen it a lot. My favourite film of the year. It’s just such an uplifting movie. You come out feeling optimistic and with a smile on your face. I was excited for it, but never imagined it’d be this good and it’s just as enjoyable every time.

It has no chance at this point. It basically need another $650 million and it's nearing the end of it's theatrical run. Even hitting $1.5 billion is unlikely. It will probably end a little over $1.4 billion which is still incredible. Most didn't think this movie would hit much over $500 million worldwide.

What stands out to me about Maverick is that it tells a complete story. By that I mean there are traditional character introductions, little plot arcs that resolve themselves, and an actual ending. None of that might sound remarkable. I mean, this is kind of what they were talking about when they said it was a very 80's/90's movie. But in the context of TODAY'S movies, these very traditional storytelling tropes feel almost radical. I think the current thinking is that modern audiences are too impatient or "sophisticated" for boring setups, and corny character arcs. Marvel is sometimes skipping origin stories altogether now. Peter Parker, America Chavez, the upcoming Fantastic Four? Eh, screw it. The public recognize the names from the comic books. Why waste a lot of time trying to make people get to know the character? Just throw them on screen and put them in an action scene. Also, why bother having a satisfying ending to the movie? Just throw in a couple mid credits scene to tease the next installment, and they'll come back to the theater for the next movie. As successful as this formula has become, maybe audiences were yearning to be told a complete story, and not just another episode in a big-budget soap opera. Ironically, by relying on age-old techniques and story structure, Maverick ended up distinguishing itself from the pack.

I agree with the marvel example too, they are not letting audiences and fans grow with characters like they did iron man and captain America. I think Top Gun just took a recipe and just transferred it from paper to digital and it worked.

Average ticket price in 1997 was $4.59. And, in 1998, it was $4.69... These reporters are lying when they say Top Gun Maverick is "bigger" than Titanic, when it is clear that Titanic sold more than twice as many tickets. Report the "dollars" milestone, sure. But always do it with the qualifier that the older movie was actually bigger in terms of audience size.

For all the ‘But akchually’ guys calling this a non-achievement because of inflation, you’ll have to consider the following: 1. A 10000x increase in home entertainment options available at the touch of a button, many more theatrical releases, shorter Theatre-streaming window. 2. Titanic having an unadjusted production budget of $200m compared to TGM’s $178m. Since, businesses care about profit more than revenue, it means their margin from domestic distribution was/is actually lower than TGM…meaning TGM provided a higher ROI than Titanic on its domestic distribution, even after we account for the multiple re-releases of Titanic.

Top Gun Maverick has only played in theaters. Just like Titanic... There are also a lot more people now than in 1997/1998. And there were plenty of entertainment options back then, too... including more theatrical movies! This summer has been notoriously light on movies. At any rate, we can't precisely adjust for such extraneous things... but we can get a sense of butts in seats, based on ticket prices of each era... by that measure, Titanic is nearly twice as big as Top Gun Maverick... way, way more butts in seats for Titanic. Your argument would only makes sense if Top Gun Maverick was simultaneously on Paramount+. But, again, it has been a theatrical exclusive, just like Titanic was. 2. We don't know the accounting of each picture, so we can't say which one was more profitable. Titanic made way more worldwide (even unadjusted), and Top Gun Maverick has to pay Tom Cruise 10% of its gross. Those budgets don't include marketing expenses either... We don't even know if that Maverick budget includes the extra costs of sitting on the movie for two years during the pandemic.... Too many unknowns to go there, but, suffice it to say, both pictures are enormously successful.

It's not accurate to say "biggest," because this is only in terms of dollars, and not butts in seats... Titanic had nearly double the butts in seats that Top Gun Maverick has had. Top Gun Maverick has had an amazing run, no doubt... just not as amazing as Titanic. When reporters just say "biggest" with no qualifiers, it makes people think one movie is literally bigger than another, as in more popular... Reporters need to be more accurate with their words.

I think it's possible the Paramount really leans in to these milestones and starts re-marketing with a "catch in theaters like it was intended!" Type of thing to really milk it's continued success. Guaranteed they are keeping it in theaters for as long as they can possibly justify it, and doing something like this and leaning on the idea of it not being in theaters forever could help push it to another milestone or two before hitting VOD.

This is what winning looks like and it is well deserved, especially when you consider what the actors went through in the pursuit of realism. I saw this movie in the theaters multiple times with my family and we loved every minute. In fact, I would rather pay and watch TGM multiple times than pay to watch any of the other woke garbage in the theaters even once and it looks like I am not alone. I already have the Blu-ray on pre-order. Best of all TGM did all this despite, "COVID-19", "monkeypox" and best of all WITHOUT CHINA! TGM crushes all the excuses the Leftists in Hollywood use to explain why their woke garbage fails. I really hope this causes movie companies to just focus on making good movies again free from a political and woke agenda audiences are tired of seeing. Also in a somewhat related note, Chris Pratt's, "The Terminal List" is also doing very well on Amazon. My wife and I saw it and loved it as well. Highly recommend that. If Hollywood movie makers refuse to acknowledge why "Top Gun Maverick" and "The Terminal List" are really connecting with audiences, know their focus is on their agendas and they don't deserve your time or money.

@@tomcruise443 I'm not sure what you mean here. Like...are you pointing out that what this guy means and what the original intention of that phrase was are different? Then...sure. But also this guy's usage of woke is probably fairly accurate to its common usage today. As for the movie, it would be dumb not to acknowledge that there's a cultural backlash to diversity-first art. There are two sides to the argument about whether creating said works are a good idea but it undeniably has a business effect. Whether that's good or bad depends on the target audience. This movie engaged a bunch of people to go see it that have largely stayed home. Many of who, yeah, feel talked down to by movies espousing a viewpoint they perceive as, at the very least, unnuanced. Black Panther took the opposit tack of explicitly marketing away from that audience and trying to excite its core audience. Neither are morally wrong.

No, it has not come close to Titanic!!! Titanic domestically sits at $1,111,212,404.36 given inflation. It sits at $2,202,000,000.00 billion world wide. @@alexhartshorn1368 Disagree. The hype around that movie was insane. I don't get it at all, but Avatar had a ton buzz around it. It has had a very similar cultural impact to Titanic and Endgame. Both of which i was alive to see in theaters.

@@kicapanmanis1060 i already knew this. It is logical to use inflation adjusted figures in my opinion. I don’t particularly care which films pass other films, only that it’s a level playing field, or don’t bother comparing figures at all.

@@oldschool8330 in your opinion, and there's no problem with you doing that, but this is wrong on multiple levels, let alone how movies back then were treated diferent, and got diferent releases. you cant just take and give random numbers to make diferent calculations. GWTW is one of the most watched movies of all time, but that's not what matters, its the raw sales figure. titanic was released in an era many called the death of cinema, will you account for it as well? what about avengers, who got far less time in theaters because we have a much bigger rotation now compared to those movies. there are just too many variables that will make one or another bigger. so the simplest solution is just get the raw numbers and move on.
