Tom Cruise is phenomenal.
He gives a nice show, but he really can play pool. This is my favorite scene from the movie.
Starring - Tom Cruise as Vincent and Paul Newman as Fast Eddie Felson.
Songs: Eric Clapton -
"It's In The Way That You Use It" & Warren Zevon - "Werewolves of London".

I remember Paul Newman saying that Tom practiced for 10 hours a day for 6 months and by the end he was so good he could've gone pro. Not strange to hear that given what we know of TC now, but back then that was some Daniel Day Lewis dedication.

Because that's the wrong way to play pool. It's not a game of strength, bravado or silly dance moves. Watch some videos here of Irving Crane, Lou Butera, Mosconi, The Miz or even modern players, such as Mika Immonen, running rack after rack and you'll see what a wonderful cerebral activity this game actually is. It's funny that Paul Newman in "The Hustler" did much to save this beautiful game, while in this flick, he did so much to ruin it.

Linear, generic, dumb, exists mainly to suck as much money from you as possible, and half assed in every single way. I can exclude some Battlefield titles but generally the latest ones are just as bad. The reason why doom is still king is because it's fun, challenging and rewards smart thinking and exploration. You don't have perks or xp to level up, instead your own instincts and sense of control improves. You just pop in the game and start shooting demons in no time. No day one patch, no broken gameplay on release, no unskippable cutscenes, no quicktime events, no content blocked by a paywall, NON of that crap... So no, cod and its equivalent crappy fps games are nowhere near being called "kings"..

The background for this scene is that Fast Eddie previously got inside info from the pool hall manager who says the older man in the nice suit carries a lot of money but scares off easy. So the plan is to have Vincent avoid showing off against the best local player Moselle (big guy in cowboy hat). Vincent disobeys and takes the fancy "Balabushka" cue and beats Moselle, scaring off the mark (cut out from the end of this clip). This explains why Fast Eddie is so disgusted, even though Vince won them money, as they could have taken the rich old guy for much more.

I only wanted to point out that I had counted all the full shots that Cruise had in the movie and it totaled 3. All the rest were probably shot by Sigel and cut into the film. A film cut means that in the next nano-second you are gonna see a different piece of film that shows the ball going into the hole or where ever. I counted Newman's as well and I believe he made all his shots; one complete shot from start to finish. I've got the movie and I'll re-check it but as a rule the film shows the shooter cueing the cue ball then the start of the forward stroke but then comes the cut and you see a new shot, maybe a different angle or something and you see the ball go in the hole then maybe, just maybe they might pan back to the guy who was supposed to be shooting first and he acts as if he made the shot, but he didn't . A stand in like Sigel has already stepped out of the camera range and I looks like Cruise made the shot but in fact it was somebody else! Watch Newman and see if you can find any cuts during any of his shots. There's only one that I'm not 100% sure about. All the rest show the complete shot in Color of and the Hustler. If you find something please let me know and thanks for the asking, I was a little to brief on the first reply.

What's funny is after he makes the 2 ball in the corner and he starts to line up the 3 ball you can easily see from the camera angle that it's going to be a pretty severe cut shot. When the camera comes back to him shooting the 3 ball it's a straight in shot. So obviously Mr. Cruise couldn't handle that shot and someone reached in and lined it straight up for him so he could continue dancing! :)

If you'll notice the position of the ball @ 1:27, compared to 1:45 when he actually shoots the one handed shot are different. I never noticed that in the 5 times I've seen this film until now. I liked this scene when I was younger, but watching it now makes me think, "what a tool." Every shot he makes in between his antics is a straight in perfectly spaced out layup. If he was walking around the table banking everything in, then maybe he could act like this... I understand it's for affect and love the movie. My favorite scene however is when he plays Grady Seasons for the first time.

"Tom Cruise runout" is a popular phrase in pool in reference to this. When the balls lay so that all you have to do to clear them up is play a series of easy stun shots to maintain position for the next ball, i.e. the easiest type of runout possible, it's referred to as a Tom Cruise runout.
