Though when it mattered the most, when the heat was on & the when the stakes couldn't be any higher Maverick was in a league all his own & simply the best of the best at dogfighting (sort of like Tom Brady playing under intense pressure during certain closely contested Super Bowl games!). Iceman was the better technical "by the book" pilot who could maintain his nerve to the end all without losing his cool (thus the moniker of "ICEMAN!"), yet Maverick's fearlessly & brazenly improvisational creativity during the most heated & perilous combat scenarios was totally unmatched, as it WAS THAT which enabled both him & Iceman to prevail in the end (granted Iceman's dogged tenacity all while badly outnumbered by several swarming MIGs was truly amazing & key to their ultimate victory, a clear cut indication of his revered TOPGUN Champ Status!). Definitely a joint team effort, though Maverick's quick thinking badassery, superlative aerial stunts & outstanding dogfighting skills saved the day (natural abilities that not even Iceman could emulate)!

The F-5, being sort of an "every-jet" shape and significantly smaller than the F-14, was a pretty logical substitute for the fictional(by necessity) MiG 28. It’s interesting if you pay attention, all of the acting is done in a close shot, in a small container, and only with their eyes. That’s it. Rest of the face is concealed. No body movement or exteriors. It’s shots of their eyes intercut with shots of planes flying, and it goes on for three minutes and it works.

There is no way at 160 miles the radar operator on the carrier could tell, unless the planes were miles apart and the operator could observe the radar returns for more than two revolutions of the radar antenna, that Maverick was engaging or disengaging. But, you probably didn't know that so you never doubted it.

The MiG-29 didn’t enter service till ‘88 which was 2 years after this movie’s timeline. They could substitute MiG-23s or 27s but those were ground attack aircraft, not true fighters. The MiG-25 and was an interceptor and wouldn’t have been able to hang in that long in a turning dogfight. MiG-21s may have worked, but they were really old even at that time, so the plot point of Maverick discovering that they could do a 5g inverted dive wouldn’t have worked.

Actually we don’t know if the enemy migs were Russian. They could’ve been but they also could’ve been Chinese, NK ect. That’s one of the underrated things about this movie: it never directly states what the enemy nation is.

@AvengeVoltaire Earlier before that dogfight they show some cockpit views of the enemy and if you looked at it in slomo you can see their eyes and they look clearly caucasian so its not north korea or middle eastern nation.

Also fun fact, those aircraft are not even migs in real life, they are American T-38 trainer jets, but they painted them black to make them look like they are migs.

@@badouplus1304 yes they are. I came to find out that they are both F-5's and T-38's. It's the same jet, the only difference is the F-5 is a single seater and the T-38 is a 2 seater. That's all. I thought that they were only T-38's , cause the document I saw on Top Gun said it was. But they actually used the single seater for the movie, so it was the F-5's.

Those fighters are allegedly supposed to represent North Korea, not Russia, the MiGs are Russian but North Korea has those Russian jets and the producers did confirm it was North Korea

Even in WW2 there were many instances where a much smaller number of fighters could fight off much larger formations effectively. On both sides. But one of the best example is the defenders of Malta, who always flew a formation of 3 obsolote Bristol Bulldogs against many times numerous, more modern Italian and German planes.
