yeah, the break manuever he pulls isnt even remotely possible in that jet. He jus brought it vertical and they shot it so it looked as if he was breaking hard to a non aviator. Its clever, but in reality if he did do that move he wouldnt of had the energy retention to do much and would fall a few thousand feet before gaining back speed., if not outright losing alltogether control of the plane. Unless he breaked and then continued the upward verticle trend, but id still imagine his airspeed would be really low. Idk, i know more about prop plane dog fighting than jet plane dogfighting tbh.

The book "night fighter" has a similar story in it, a crew is chasing a German bomber all over England trying to get a shot at it but the German pilot is so good they can never get a shot. The fight ends with both planes diving towards the ground with the British pilot the first to decide they were too close to the ground. The German was only wrong by a few feet but at that speed it meant the end of the plane and crew. The British crew was awarded the "kill" even though not one shot was fired.

The F-14 was one of the first jets to have computer-aided controls. In the beginning, the wings were more manually adjusted. Later, a better computer automatically adjusted the wing's angle. I believe the F-14's glove vanes are manually extended or retracted.

The F-14 wasn't computer aided. Yeah the wings' angle were adjusted by computer, but that doesn't mean the whole plane's flight was controlled by computer. The F-14 and F-15 were the last were the flight was purely "manual", with the flight surfaces being controlled by the pilot himself.

When this movie came out, I was in the navy and had spent allot of time on flight decks around F-14's and many other navy jets. Even though my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, we still had a tendency to dissect it and point out everything they did wrong. When Jester said the A-4 was smaller, faster, and more maneuverable.... we were like... Uh, no sir. The A-4 is NOT faster than a Tomcat. Not even close. Smaller, definitely. A Tomcat is huge. More maneuverable.... depends on who's driving. Faster? Not a chance. In a dog fight like these, the Tomcat would leave the "Scooter" in it's wake. Don't get me wrong. To be fair...in some situations a smaller, nimble, lighter, less powerful aircraft can more than hold its own against a larger, more specialised fighter. In the UK, the USAF used to practice with their F-15s against the RAF Tornado F3s and Hawk T1s. In BVR mode, the F15 and F3 were pretty even as both had decent radar and AMRAAM. However close in the F15 was superior to the F3. The Hawk T1s though, caused the F-15s all sorts of problems. .

Even if this is a horribly inaccurate representation of these two jets' actual flight characteristics, BFM and ACM, it still never ceases to be entertaining and one of my favorite movies ever.
@rhysgoodman76282 жыл бұрын
Well the F-14 is actually incredibly maneuverable. Not even “just for its size”, flat out it’s a maneuverable aircraft. And the A-4 is VERY maneuverable. It has a 720 degree per second roll rate, which is incredibly high. So if the planes look “too maneuverable”, it’s not entirely the case. Sure there’s some clever camera work, but the Tomcat and Skyhawk were both very maneuverable.

I was 11 when this movie came out. As much as people appreciate Top Gun 2 "Maverick"...Unless you were born when the original came out...You can't possibly understand how LARGER THAN LIFE this movie became, especially once it came out on VHS. (The "Streaming Service" of our time...Even DVD is "old" so that should tell you something.) Because of Top Gun, for about five years after its release...Fighter Pilots were bigger than pro-athletes. No joke. If you were an aviator, especially a Naval Aviator, you got more pu$$y than a gynecologist.

And what's more interesting is, Goose says in the bar scene that he'd be happy to find a girl to talk dirty to him. Looks like Goose wasn't exactly husband of the year material. There's a pretty good chance he was just running his mouth like guys do when they're out with their buddies, but you never know.
@leesmith6866 Жыл бұрын
@@DV_Dark_Jedi Prolly the second part lol. Goose wasn't exactly a "Chad" type. Although Naval Aviators, especially back then got plenty of attention from vvomen in military towns/bases/port cities. And after Top Gun came out, OMFG, if you were ANY kind of pilot, let alone a fighter pilot, you were like an NBA player lol.

2:00 to 2:04 is the coolest thing....you lose the perspective of the plane's forward motion, and it looks like the plane rolls to the right without really flying.... fantastic aerial footage throughout this whole movie

Actually I think that big dynamic looking twisty spin roll the tomcat does is a condition called inertial coupling , meaning the axial roll creates yaw and so the nose does not keep straight but swirls around like a spinning top. The tom w 2 widely spaced engines and wide body was prone to this. The plane is literally out of control to a degree here.

"the jets you are flying against are smaller , faster and more maneovrable" sees an A-4 Skyhawk... Yeah right... at least you got the first one right
@frodrigues20089 жыл бұрын
sparrowlt Sorry didnt get it. Whats wrong with that line?
@sparrowlt9 жыл бұрын
beatifull mind in matrix The A-4 Skyhawk is subsonic.. it has less than half the top speed of an F-14 . Also the "more maneovrable" part is highly debatable.. they were certainly more nimble and very agile as they simulated well MIG-17s.. but their low thrust-toweight ratio meant they were stuck horizontally while the F-14 and F-18 way higher ratio allowed them to play vertically . Yes.. that was the intention of TopGun.. to teach F-14 (and later F-18) crews to exploit their planes strong points against the other guy's weak points.. but that doesnt change the fact that in a dogfight with equal pilots of equal skills the F-14 and F-18 will outmaneover an A-4
@frodrigues20089 жыл бұрын
The F14 was original created to protect aircraft carriers from missiles fired from fighter/bombers against the aircraft carrier thats why he can carrier the largest/long range missiles an aircraft ever carried.He was not made for dogfihting, he´s very fast but at TOP GUN doesnt matter, does it?
@frodrigues20089 жыл бұрын
sparrowlt I am not technical knowledge at flying specifics of fighter, but i remenber to see blue angels with A-4s and later F-18s the F-16 belongs to the Air Force. I just dont imagine F-14 doing that kind of stuff.When i was a kid i drawn many aircraft because i like aerodynamics. Ratios i dont know nothing about it.
@sparrowlt9 жыл бұрын
beatifull mind in matrix it kind of does because speed is usually related to thrust and engine exhaust speed. the F-14 has a quite high thrust to weight ratio.. The only exception where the plane is subsonic but has a very high thrust to weight is the Harrier family.. and thats related to the way the Pegasus engine works. Also this was well learnt in the Vietnam war.. if a US pilot in a F-4 Phamton would try to chase a MIG-17 in a turning dogfight it would loose.. however the Phamton was way more powerfull than the Fresco so they learn to use the power to maneover in the vertical where the MIG-17 couldnt follow.. thats where they used A-4s .. the MIG-21 was a diferent history as it was more powerfull but less agile than the MIG-17.. so they used the F-5 to simulate MIG-21s .. then when the new generation of MIG-29 and SU-27 came they began using F-16 and F-18s to simulate. Do you know that in TopGun they actually used the F-14 to simulate SU-27s?
