Dwan was perceived to never hold top-10 hands in his range. Helmuth thought Dwan at best could have AKo or AJs or his favorite 86o or 89s or some garbage he loves to bluff. Helmuth beats all Dwan’s bluffs. It was just ridiculous that Dwan had J10s , best hand on board that Helmuth never ever thought could be in Dwan’s range. It’s a standard call against a wild opponent. U should play ranges not think your opponent always has the best hand. Dwan moving all in looked like AK or missed flush draw. Announcer even said that “ Dwan went from being stuck big to becoming a small winner “. Helmuth knew Dwan was losing hence tilted & could punt everything off a bluff. Helmuth is a fantastic player. Never come to a conclusion on a player based on 1 single hand . It’s the sample size , if Helmuth plays 25K hands he could easily beat Dwan heads-up, just like he beat Daniel Negreanu. 1 hand means shit. Hence when u play poker & lose with AA & KK on same day in 1 session don’t think your poker career is finished. That’s why Helmuth won so many bracelets

I remember watching this when it first aired. Dwan bluffed at an insane rate even for Dwan and he got away with almost every bluff he attempted. If I remember right, it was Eli that picked off a big bluff when he had top pair against Dwan's missed draw which got him stuck. I think Phil taking too long is a legit criticism. 5 minutes is enough time to make a life or death decision so it's enough time to decide to call or fold an all in shove on the river. But there's actually a lot going on here. Flop comes possible straight and flush draw, turn pairs the board and a blank on the river, no draws completed. At this point either Dwan is going to bluff hard to try to win the hand or he's had a made hand the entire way through. It's as polarized as it can get. The shove on the river is the exclamation point on that polarization because Phil's stack preservation style is susceptible to the big bet bluff and Phil knows that that is a weakness of his game that other players have exploited in the past especially guys that without hesitation will over bet and bluff all in.

@totalhysteria3 жыл бұрын
Because that's Phil Hellmuth, simply. When he decides to make a play it's based on emotions and his reads. We all know he usually play very snug, but from time to time he decides to be sticky and call down very light when he think he will catch a player bluffing. Yeah 97o is a dreadful hand to even consider this idea since he is even behind most of Tom's bluffs. But the plan was probably made in the particular hand when he felt very strongly Dwan was about to punt his stack, so he decided to call with intentions to hold on to his hand if he got a piece of the flop.

Idiot move - ego got the best of Phil in this hand. Forgetting about the money a moment, Phil is so desperate to earn respect as a cash game player, and the prospect of catching one of the best cash players in the world with a bluff and calling his all in was too tempting for him. Phil is a tournament player, but loses to everyone in cash games, even amateurs and twitch personalities. Now to give mad credit to Tom, I think he realized this personal 'need' by Phil and made his all-in bet look like a bluff since the turn was checked and the river was harmless. This is an amazing call, but unfortunately it was one of the greatest value bets ever made. Every action Durr took suggested a bluff. Durr knew that Phil knew. Durr knew his range at the river includes loads of bluffs, missed flushes, straights, even AK. 2 tens on board makes a ten less likely for Durr. Phil beats 67 and 78. It's unlikely Durr would jam AA on the river on that board, because it's hard to get called by worse. It's basically a ten or nothing and Durr's range is just to wide not to call.

it's really not. the tens pair up, making it harder to actually hold one and a queen is less advantageous for his range than a king or jack. Normally, with a hand that re-raises pre-flop, you have a lot of stuff which doesn't connect with this board. The bet is polar, so Dwan is representing a small range of nutted hands, not an overall advantage and balances it with a range with more bluffs than he would for a smaller bet size, to make the caller relatively indifferent. I think he should fold this, but its not ridiculously straight forward as you seem to think.

@mick727xd2 жыл бұрын
@@biggenderneutralpoohead You don't call in a linear fashion against a polar bet though. For example, 97 is a far better call than A7 without a heart, because you potentially block value and unblock bluffs. Dwan likely has 3 combo's of QQ, 1 combo of 10's, 2 combo's of J10s, 1 combo of Q10s, 2 combo's of K10s and 6 combos of A10o, which makes for 15 total combos. He'll check some of these rather than triple barrel as they block Hellmuth's calling range. Phil only has to win 1 in 3 times approx to break even, in other words, If Dwan has 8 bluff combos from a selection of low suited aces, KJ, AJ, 98s, it's a breakeven call.

@lovelylemonfactory3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely not Tom's value range here. Phil's hand is pretty much face up here. The strongest he can possibly have is AQ. Tom can do this with 77, QQ, KK, AA and AQ for value with little to no worries of being called by better.
@ALF88923 жыл бұрын
Rookie move for sure not even close. If he had queens and you thought he was bluffing you might be able to call but with 7s the guy could be bluffing and still have you beat. No problem laying that down. Honestly he didn't have to call 16,100 after betting pre flop and certainly should have folded after 50k+ on the turn. A large bet on the turn was possible on the turn for hellmuths position but honestly he shouldn't have even been in that hand at all. Tom looked scared going all in and the entire time after. It looked like a big bluff. Durr is the only one looking close to genius more like a great actor.

I don’t understand how he’s upset with this, aside from the fact that we know he’s irrational to begin with. Dwan three bet to $16k trying to make a play and PH calls with 9-7 off. He literally gets beat by like 12 different hands in Dwans range: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AQ, KQ, QJ, 77, A10, K10, Q10, J10 and 10-10. If he really thought Dwan had nothing he would’ve pushed pre-flop, but he didn’t know and he didn’t push. That’s why you don’t play hands like this and if you do, you don’t do it in this manner.

@@carlo8044 disagree for two reasons: (1) super aggressive players like Dwan can also value bet thinner to balance out all the bluffs in their range so I wouldn't be shocked to see Dwan play a queen like this; (2) distribution says this is one of the worst hands Phil can ever have in this spot (really, he shouldn't have it at all, the preflop play is really bad) so even against a super aggressive player like Dwan you gotta have some folds in your range against an overbet on the river and 97o is certainly it, especially since the 9 blocks some missed straight draws.
