Bosom Buddies was my favorite show when I was in fifth grade, and I idolized Tom Hanks. One time in class we played a game on a rainy day where everybody told who their favorite actor was. I proudly proclaimed, “Tom Hanks!” After the show ended I followed his career, and would be over the moon if he made a guest appearance on Family Ties or whatever, and before long, Splash! came along, and Dragnet and Big, and eventually superstardom. From the very beginning, though, I sensed he was going to be huge, because in my mind he already was.

You can easily live like a regular joe from the syndication money from one show...he ended up having two. That back end money is no joke.

I figured he was likely thought of as too short to be leading man. Then again, guys like Dustin Hoffman and Michal J. Fox did great, so did Tom Cruise. But shorter guys whether fair or not have to bring more to the table, they have to either have amazing acting chops like Hoffman, and/or have that charm, wit or combination of something extra/and arrive at the right time like Fox and Cruise did. I always thought this was the reason Alfonso Ribeiro didn't have a bigger career beyond Silver Spoons and Fresh Prince, he had all the skills and good looks, but was a short guy.

@jeffnettleton38586 ай бұрын
That may be the way that Hanks remembers it; but it wasn't the case. Bosom Biddies went through several timeslot changes, including airing on different nights. There was a promo for the series, where they joked about doing the "network shuffle," as they changed nights. Magnum PI was on opposite Barney Miller and It's a Living, in its first season. In the second season, Bosom Buddies started out against Nurse and Knots Landing, before being switched to an earlier timeslot, putting them up against Magnum PI. They were also switched to Friday nights, up against The Incredible Hulk, before the switch back to Thursday, in the slot against Magnum. I loved the series and followed it through the changes; but, in retrospect, it had worn out its premise in the first season and the second was a struggle to find plots.

Bosom Buddies first season hit the nail. It was such a kid’s tv show - like Hanks using the stapler as a Star Trek communicator in one season. They lost it in the second season, but it really could not be sustained, the men dressing as women was a one joke schtick that got old fast and while they had the talent, they could not keep up the jokes. Hanks did Bachelor Party and Splash not long after and was really quite funny in both. It’s nice to hear he stayed friends with Scolari - they had a great play off each other on the sitcom.

As I understand it, Bosom Buddies was originally pitched to the network execs as a straight buddy show, just two guys living and working in New York. The show creators didn't have the cross dressing angle anywhere on their radar. But, at some point during the pitch meeting, one of them used the friendship chemistry between Tony Curtis' and Jack Lemmon's characters in Some Like It Hot to illustrate the kind of friendship between Kip and Henry. The network execs latched onto the cross dressing in THAT movie, and suddenly loved the idea, thinking that the show HAD to go in that direction. After the pitch meeting, the show creators were in the elevator and looked at each other bewildered wondering how in the hell they had just ended up writing a show about two men trying to pass as women.
