As a Bay Area native this interview warms the cockles of my heart. I too benefitted from the Alameda county community college system at Laney, and I watched Berkeley Rep productions for free as part of a high school program.

I too can relate being from the Bay Area myself , born and raised in alameda county and being maybe a few months older than hanks . His memory and experience of things matched my own . Having grown up in Fremont I went to ohlone college. I was an A’s and raiders fan as he was

This guy who said "shame on you" changed his life. Sometimes you can change a person's life if you just encourage them at the right time.

It’s great to hear his story. Only my 9th grade theatre arts and English teachers kept me in school. Unfortunately, my drama teacher put on a school play with only 3 characters so no one got to be in it. I realize now it was a very bad decision on his part. I’m 70 now and still have never been in a play. I always wonder about the “how.” Most articles and interviews skip over that crucial step. I had no idea Tom Hanks had so much classical acting experience. So glad he took the advice of mentors. With a young child, he easily could have ended up in the restaurant business for the paycheck. Smart mentors with practical advice are so RARE and valuable. People do make a living in the arts. 🎭 There’s so many people ready with horrible advice. There should be a law!

Find your local community theatre! It's never too late. Community Theatre always needs great older actors!

The host ought to be an actor because he has delivered a 45-second speech he would call a question.
