I met Tom Hardy in Starbucks once, London. It was really busy, raining heavily out side so I decided, like many others, to just get my drink & something to eat to sit inside. Couldn't find a table or at least a table with a seat & I heard a voice say: 'Sit here mate, spare seat. I wouldn't go out in that neither.' I replied with, 'Are you sure? Thanks very much, I really appreciate it.' Yeah sure, no problem, make yourself comfortable, he said. It wasn't until I took my jacket off, sat down & realised it was him. We had a really nice chat and he was very, very curious about the guitar in it's case I had with me & he asked if he could have a look at it. Really nice guy, very charming, inquisitive, polite and just genuinely a down to earth guy. What are the chances of that happening, eh.

How can you reach as many media outlets as possible to generate the most exposure and soundbites within the shortest amount of time, so that the marketing doesn't feel tired by the time the movie hits theaters? OK. I run an online blog, Thompson on Hollywood on Indiewire, and I do these admittedly amateurish flipcam videos intended to be one-on-one intimate interviews outside of the super-promotional TV junket setting. I'm a "print" editor/writer, and the idea is to create a comfortably informal vibe, to achieve something like a "real" conversation, if that's possible. The ideal with this primitive camera's sound is to be as close as possible, with the camera equidistant between me and the subject. I should have closed the window. There's always a bit of a scramble (especially in this particular case) to get into a location, set up, and maximize the limited time for the interview. I sometimes succeed better than others. I ordered a sound mic for the Flip just when Cisco discontinued it. Why do I insist on using this outdated device? It's portable, I can put it in my purse with a little tripod, and I carry an adjustable camera mount. I don't want to schlep lights and fills and a lot of equipment to create this artificial atmosphere. I use natural light. I'm not a filmmaker. I want them to talk to me. But I know I should improve. Suggestions anyone? A newer better portable simple point and shoot with sound?

I frequently get the impression when watching actors who are being interviewed that they're working, there's an obvious pretense at being polite. Its like the effort involved in promoting a film is just a part of their job and interviews are a necessary evil. Not so with this interview; TH didn't put on any airs, he was comfortable, relaxed, involved and seemed like he was really interested to be taking about the film.

@johnnytastetest9 жыл бұрын
+Ben Katzazz You can hear what he's saying well enough if you listen carefully - but notice how her voice is louder than the subject's? If this interview was done for a print publication and the video shot just so she could personally cite it for accuracy or something, then hey, no big deal; but if it were me interviewing A-list celebrities, I'd invest a few bucks into some lapel microphones. A more portable and less cumbersome option would be a Zoom H4N or something.
@johnnytastetest9 жыл бұрын
***** "However a good audio recorder placed closer to Tom would have made it better." That's all I'm saying. Thanks for letting off some of that steam though, Bennett. ;) Yes, Lapel mics stink. She simply needs to buy a digital recorder like the one I mentioned and slap it down on the table. Combine that with cell phone footage and you're off to the races. People will happily watch shitty video with amazing sound, but amazing video with shitty sound is still...well, shitty.
+johnnytastetest I totally agree with you. You don't even need to put a mic on him, just a directional shotgun mic on top of the camera would to a perfectly fine job and costs around 200 bucks. Good audio quality makes a HUGE difference
@johnnytastetest9 жыл бұрын
+Niggoification Yeah, I own the Rode shotgun mic. That's all she'd need I was pitching the Zoom H4N (or a comparable model), 'cause all she'd have to do is press record and chuck the thing on a nearby table. It'll pick up everything (so it'd be excellent for interviewing more than one person too) in a hotel room like this, and on numerous tracks, which can be leveled easily after the fact, piece of cake.

His most unrecognisable role alongside "Stuart: A Life Backwards".

I'm not saying I'm in love with the way Tom Hardy presents his interpretation his understanding of his role, the characters, and the movie, but I'm not not saying it. I would buy him a beer.

I loved him in "TheWarrior" it's like Rocky on steroids! The Drop is my favorite movie Tom Hardy is in. He held back from kicking ass until the very ends then he gets people back and you eat it up! He was amazing to hate in The Revenant no one could have played that part better nobody I hope he gets an oscar, please movie people give it to him! Can't wait to see Tom in more movies! I'm a big fan!

Pete you insane? Casino Royale is considered one of the greatest action movies of all time and Skyfall recieved extremely high critical acclaim. No actor is above playing Bond. Bond will be around longer than any actor.

THIS WAS A SUPERB INTERVIEW. It catches Tom's personality and intellect so well! It reminds me of the one on ones with Marlon Brando, who I'm matching Tom Hardy with to be a future remembered epic actor. Tom is not as insular and quirky as Marlon but something seems Classic old school acting film genius about Tom Hardy.

Good interview, thanks. Really adds to my understanding of the movie and the process of creating it. Found particularly interesting his remarks on Innaritu's notion of the Fitzgerald character and Hardy's need to take ownership of it if the performance is to be effective. I've done a fair share of theatre and this is classic push-pull dynamic between director and actor.

I did turn up the volume but, I don't have a problem with accents and am surprised to read how often Americans have difficulty with his accents so the mention of a mic or subtitles would be a solution, but my understanding is that subtitles are difficult to add (getting the timing right). Your interview was pretty good and so glad you didn't ask some of the mindless questions this fellow has to field all day long. More about his future plans (playing Elton John!) would have been appreciated and follow up questions about producing would have been great. I could listen to him discuss his craft forever-such an intelligent, engaging man. He could have sat there completely bored and dialed in an interview but he is utterly captivating!

When he speaks about George Miller, you can tell Hardy absolutely enjoys the man and working with him.

just saw the film. wonderful stuff from all concerned. amazed to hear Hardy went right from Legend to this because I assumed he had a ton of research/prep for the role, especially the accent, which seemed specific (not just generic ""Southern" or whatever). Baltimore? it sounded like that to me.
