I don't think he's saying he hates hip hop, I think he's saying he hates the current state of the hip hop culture. I actually think the culture is changing for the better and lyricism and positive messages are starting to take over due to the way artists can get music to us these days. They don't have to go through the mainstream gate keepers to make it and it's allowing for more diverse subject matter and I'm enjoying it alot more.

Spot on bro. Tom is making his point, but he isn’t saying he actually hates hip hop. Just like I don’t think he actually believes Eminem is a real clone since Encore (as he says in Cloned Rappers). It’s a metaphor, he has no label so he speaks his mind and a lot of it is symbolic and metaphorical to make a good point. I mean, I hate hip hop is actually musically and lyrically A HIP HIP SONG. Lol

Couldn't have said it better. Knox hill is always spot on with Tom's music even pointing out things I didnt catch. But I feel like he missed the full meaning behind this song. @@_Sawyer_ yeah. I understand his take on it though. Tom did take his shots at certain styles or ways of coming up. Wasn't really necessary to get his message across but at the same time I understand where Tom's coming from too. Any time you make broad statements you paint some people with the brush that don't really fit. Can't please everyone, though. I always enjoy KH's insight and takes. This song is on my hype running playlist for sure, that beat is hard.

My take on this song... 1) he's Tom MacDonald... he's not going to accept your labels or your boxes, he's doing it his way. 2) He hates that today's Hip Hop is glorifying ruining the youth, by teaching them that the goal is to be high out of your mind, wearing 10 gold chains, in an expensive car with 3 hoes, a bag of drugs, a sack of cash, a gun in each hand and a body in the trunk beside the shovel. Could he have said the same thing differently? Absolutely. But THIS got your attention. This got you thinking. This got you TALKING. So did he actually do it wrong?

As a massive hip hop fan I don’t see the “I hate hip hop” as literal, to me this song is more about calling out the current hip hop culture which is very toxic while also saying he is his different from all the mainstream rappers in all the sub-genres. I could see why a rapper might take this song the wrong way but as a consumer, I absolutely love it. Today’s hip hop is almost exclusively drugs, money, women, and sex. Yes there are artists like NF who aren’t toxic, but Tom’s different. I’d describe him as punk hip hop, not afraid to be edgy and piss the mainstream off

"Don't call me a rapper" isn't him saying hes not a rapper, its saying you cant label him and the ppl that are spreading the negative message 'putting these kids in they grave' the same. So, if they are rappers then dont call him a rapper. Also, it was definitely a 'flex' song.

It's not about "look at me". It's about "look at the horrible condition of hip hop". pushing drug abuse, pushing mistreatment of women, pushing getting drunk at the club, pushing violence... hip hop is a disaster. And he brings this out very well.

I think he was speaking about the specific negative things that current popular hip hop promotes . And you can't really deny that there are plenty of them. Like in Exposure, Dear Rappers, and Helluvit, he's just setting himself apart from those things that he sees wrong with hip hop. Basically saying, if this stuff is what being a rapper or hip hop is...don't call me one. Enjoyed the reaction, as always 😉 Gotta admit, I was waiting for that sting to hit at the first line and you didn't disappoint lol

The visuals in this vid were so dope. Now, we have Tom and Hopsin utilizing a Purge theme. Another banger btw, Hopsin, “The Purge.” I respect your opinion because you’re always so on point and knowledgeable, but I agree with a lot of the other commentators, I feel like he’s attacking the negative aspects of the hip hop culture and people who are capitalizing on genres that they aren’t personally qualified to speak on, but the song certainly grabs your attention and gets a conversation started with that beat hitting so hard and the insane visuals. I appreciate your amazing breakdowns as always, and I’d certainly be interested in seeing you react to battle rap since you came up around that scene. I think his purpose was to shed light on some of the more negative aspects of each subgenre of hip hop. He's also trying to point out that he doesn't fit in. He's right. He doesn't fit in anywhere. And he says very clearly that you shouldn't take what he said as a diss. It's not personal. He possesses values that don't align with most people. And whether he claims to be unfazed by this shit or not - it has to be pretty annoying, when representing your brand, to have people ask you why you can't be more of this or that. Why aren't you more marketable Tom? Why can't you be less confrontational Tom? As much as I disagree with some of his disses at some of the subgenres, I can't deny that Tom is in his own corner and carving his own path through hip hop.

I see this as Tom once again exposing the bad sides of the discourse. Of course he throws out the baby with the water , calling out on all rappers. That's the Tom extreme button/create debate button. There's so much wrong with the culture of songs that glamourise gun and violence, objectify women, equate success to rocking luxury brands. Rappers used to sing from the heart, and I'm sure a few still do, but so many of us are too scared of the backlash in social media and artists are no different. So we need many other Toms, each telling their own truth while reiterating that we have so much in common.

I think what Tom is saying is that every artist should do their own thing instead of copying things that have already been created. Many people want to be like other people, but what they should be doing is standing on their own mountain.

Music is in the eye of the beholder, it's our choice as humans to put out whatever we like musically. I'm all about death core, but I love to listen to everything rap hip hop. This is how we grow and become greater. I wouldn't give a damn bout what other people's opinions likes and dislikes are of me. Knox keep up the great work, your breakdowns are second to none, and I've listened to a lot of your tracks, Great work, dawg. Never stop, never quit, never give up

So look Knox I just found u like a week ago cuz of reactions u did on church and Adam Calhoun. U are awesome, and I understand ur point, but I feel like the I hate hip hop point here is the “hip hop” scene that u see on tv these days. The real mainstream stuff is MOSTLY all negative messages and the people pushing those messages are completely against anybody who makes music with a meaning, the kind of stuff that makes u reflect on ur life and give u motivation to push harder towards ur goals regardless of what mainstream’s opinion is. Hope u see this man and I’d like to see ur response. I’ve become a huge a fan of the way u break things down.

As someone who grew up with a large group of friends who were all influenced by gangster rap; as a grown man, it definitely had a negative impact on a lot of us in various degrees, some really severe. I still listen to it sometimes, but I also kind of hate it for what it is now.

Well, I'm a year late from this reaction but only recently subbed and going thru your Tom reactions first. Ok, so I respect everything you said, it's on point. However, can you imagine how long and technically boring the song woulda been if he had to nail each specific Hip Hop example? He generalized, IMHO, as most people do and feel about it having grown up with late 80's/90's Hip Hop. As a general wholeTHESE days Hip Hop is shit and has been since the end of the 90's. This does NOT mean there arent a few rare diamonds in that pile of shit, but they are exceedingly rare in comparison to late 80's/90 Hip Hop where you turn on a radio and it's banger after banger hittin the airwaves. Again, SOME are carrying the torch and I respect them for it: Real music, real messages, real purpose. Back in the day you could tell who was singing: voices, beats, and style was unique to the singer(s). These days, it's all the same beats. You can get away with throwing a shoe in the dryer for a beat and autotune someone rippin ass after Taco Bell, change a face, and they call it good. It's crap.

I don't think he's saying he hates the genre of hiphop, I think he's saying he hates the hiphop culture. It's in the refrain, "the while culture is cancer, they'd kill their momma for some clout and a chain." He's got a point. There's a lot of trash out there.

I think he mean modern day hip hop chief. Because most of the people in the hip hop community will do anything for clout. Even sell their soul, which has been brought up several times. He said that he doesn’t consider him in that lane because he’d rather go through the struggle and the hate than take the easy way out like all the others in the mainstream.

I think tom's message here was that he doesn't want to be called a rapper because of the stigma and culture surrounding rap/hip hop. He wants to be seen and valued as an artist and musician, not as just another rapper. He's not a gimmick or a joke, he has a message and wants to be taken seriously. He hates what rappers have done to hip hop as a genre. He's saying these other rappers don't have a message and they're not real and he doesn't want to be lumped in with people making trash when his goal is to make art and to make a difference

-Seen the comment about purge masks, actually there was several dance squads that came out about 5 years ago that had the same masks. -Tom keeps on getting "I'm not going to listen to him because he looks like a mumble rapper" "oh he sounds like Eminem" "Is that MGK" "He's like the white Hopsin" he's lashing out and inviting people to check him out based on his performance, and wants to be recognized as an individual, as him, and not everyone else. -When are you gonna react to one of Nova's tracks? Parking lot heroes, Genghis Kahn, Problem, Runnin, Wishing Well, Mi Yard, Bodega, Jesus on my neck

You have to judge Tom by his collection of music to understand where he's coming from. I'm 32 years old just like Tom. We're both virgo's. So I'm pretty sure I know what he was trying to do for this one. The "they kill their moma for some clout and a chain" line and the songs "Dear Rappers", "The Way I Am (Remix)", & "Cancelled" seems pretty clear to me that he hates the current state of hip hop and misses the old days of Biggie, old school Eminem, and 2Pac. Tom comes across as a rebel similar to how Eminem came across as a rebel when he made the song The Real Slim Shady that's why he's as popular as he is now. The biggest difference is that Tom seems to be more fearless than Eminem. There are issues that Eminem has never and would never talk about.
