But if your response is middling or worse than the other person's AND you take longer to get it out, imo, it ups the disappointment and makes you look bad. Like "you had all this time compared to the other guy and you STILL couldn't produce something good enough." To me, Tom's first diss was better than Mac's response, which I though was very lackluster, and when Tom then dropped an even better diss in a fraction of the time that Mac took, it basically buried Mac as far as "who's doing this better" went.

@@jennag3226 There also wasn't a way to put responses out so fast back then. Even if they were going back and forth on MTV, scheduling took a lot of time and such. It's the pony express versus email. If they'd had MTV access a day or two apart replying to each other back then, people would have thought it was all staged. Considering some of them, they'd have been done their response the next day or so and probably done the song inside of a week. Then they'd fit the responses in where they could, not sweating the delay. Nowadays, response time has to be tighter. Months responding? Nobody would even remember what was up with that gap. But taking less than a day to respond and filming a video that crisp is still impressive. It means Tom either already had most of it written ahead of time or he was really that ready. Considering so much of what he said was direct response to Mac's rap, the turnaround is impressive. Some of the last generation could have pulled it off if they were at their peak now, but most of them would probably still take a few days instead of finishing the response before going to bed again. Since his response was good, it puts Tom in the range of impressive. If it had flopped, he'd have looked like a tryhard.

Loved your point about the first diss-track being an opening salvo. I felt that Tom's mentioning that Mac had a daughter was a warning that Tom might "go there" as part of the battle if necessary. Still I felt Tom's first track had more punctuation than Mac's answer. Mac had a couple problems. First, if you look into his battle rapping career, the tail end had really been him riding the tailcoats of his earlier career, living off the clout from when he was much better. Secondly, he got baited hard. The first track was about as weak a song as you can find from Tom macdonald in recent time, so not only did he get baited into responding but responding with half ass bars and filler, thinking Tom was out of his element so he couldn't compete. Then tom dropped the guillotine on his neck

Quite honestly I thought Tom had a couple good punchlines and a couple good schemes in the first one with some good humor, so I was excited for Mac's response. Tom focused heavily on age, parenting, and drug use in the first one, so he left plenty of openings for Mac to really knock him out. I felt like Mac was a total letdown. It was cringey, had a lot of filler bars, and a lot of his claims were easily disproved, plus he basically handed Tom material to use against him. Tom's final response was hard hitting and actually funny, so I thought Tom won both rounds with the second being so much overkill that Mac had to bury his head in the sand and disappear. That's just my opinion, but maybe I just set my expectations too high for a seasoned battle rapper to have much better material. Especially since Tom had never done diss tracks before.🤷‍♀️

I didn't interpret Tom's track as going after Mac's daughter, therefore I think Mac's track was low going after Nova the way he did. I also felt Mac's track was corny and juvenile. No response is partly a response to Mac Lethal not dropping a response to Mac Lethal Sucks (I believe it was also aimed at Crypt who might have tried to come to Mac Lethal's defense). Also, by using that title for his second track, Tom messed with the algorithm. If "Mac Lethal" was searched on YT Tom's diss Mac Lethal Sucks was displayed. I think it was a year or so later that Mac dropped Mac Lethal Sucks 2 in order to save a little face and also to burry the hatchet. That's how I understand the continuation. Then again, the fans trolling Mac with "Hi Dave, hi Dave, hi Dave" was a, somewhat unexpected, gift.

Tom won: Tom never dissed Lethal's daughter at any point Tom used wrestling references twice, perfect against wrestling used against him. Tom repeatedly switched flows. And as usual, his sarcasm and attacks are on point. Nova had the vid production on point and Tom's smooth, flowing response was within days Lethal's response took weeks, no production value, his references were outdated, his beats were old, which is fine, and his flow was stale and awkward. Tom (and Nova) set him up for the kill, and smoothly took off his head. Note: Lethal did have a second vid, more of an apology, but a much better song and vid than his weak AF dis track.

When you went and checked Lethal's most-viewed video, you saw commenting turned off? I believe #HOG overran it and filled his comments with "Hi Dave, hi Dave, hi Dave" until it was shut down. The fast rap Tom did at the end was a kick to the Guiness World record Lethal set when he rapped 2k words in a minute. Also, when Tom mentioned 20 styles of rapping, it was a kick to Lethal's song rapping in 27 styles. I believe Tom's second diss was written in 20 styles, which is why he used that number, but it's hard for me to tell, since I'm no expert!! Ok, now Tom's "No Response" will make more sense when you get to it. Awesome reaction! I am so glad I subbed! 👍😄❤
