When Tom jumped into the air he was just realizing he was learning to fly. Now I'm sure his soul is in heaven having a glorious time. RIP dear one.

I was 15 years old and suicidal when this first aired on Showtime. I'd watch it every time it was on. I'm not saying that I would be dead now if not for this song but it helped me through a tough time.

Vanessa Masciantonio,,, no this is not like the original but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers came on the scene like a fresh breeze that woke up a new generation to rock and roll.. Disco be Damned... I hope you have had the chance to see this band live. They took everyone's breath away and the girls and women melted in the audience. This was 1977... lol... so I'm just giving you a time frame.

@pilatesbody1 The "original" is by British beatgroup The Little Darlings, so I guess you're not referring to The Music Explosion's cover version? The original was produced by John Carter & Ken Lewis of The Ivy League (Carter/Lewis & the Southerners, Flower Pot Men etc.) who also wrote the song, so it's a "British InvERsion" song (not British invasion bands covering American tunes, but the other way around). It can be found on an Ace CD called “You heard it here first”. But Petty did a great job.

this is a deadly version of the song. Petty should have recorded it professionally. it's due for a rebirth with a fresh, contemporary spin.

Stan might have been a pain the ass for Tom, but he was one hell of a good drummer when the groove got going.
