This was my dad's ringtone. We all hated it, but he refused to change it. You'd have this nice, calm, quiet afternoon, and then all of a sudden "COLD WAAAATERSSSS". Fucking jumped outta my seat more than once. Rest in peace, dad. Thanks for the music, Tom.

This song is definitely one of my top ten from Tom Waits. I remember hearing the part when he says “I look 47 but I’m … 24” for the first time when I was in my mid-20s, and was thinking, after years of really heavy drink and drugs, that I was lucky to still be rather babyfaced. I just turned 47 a few months ago, and I somehow still look like I’m in my 30s, though I’ve been homeless, and spent more than half of my life drinking heavily and shooting drugs. I’ve been clean for about five-six years now, and frequently see people at the methadone clinic who are half my age but look older than me. I guess I’m just really fortunate in that respect- it’s a hard life, and I feel bad for anyone who’s currently making the same mistakes that I did. A lot of his songs resonate with me because the lyrics are so relatable, and obviously the musical talent on display is just awesome. I remember someone asking me what type of music Tom Waits does, and while It can be classified (I think) as bluesy rock, or rocky blues, I try to explain it as maybe “Bum Rock”, or “Vagrant Blues”. Most accurately, I think I would classify it as “must listen”- it’s too eclectic and unique to be pigeonholed. Sorry for the long comment- I just hadn’t heard this album in a while, and it’s hard to not just sit back and contemplate life and death while getting swept up in the melody and lyrics. Thanks so much for posting this, and have a great week!

I sympathize with this comment. Im currently 25 and people still ask my age (most people give me 16 years old) when buying cigarrettes lol. I still drink a lot from time to time, have a few benzodiazepines but nowhere near when i was younger and heavily depressed. Thank god my vices didn´t ruin my face structure, just my liver momentarily and my skin. Hoping to leave everything after i turn 30 if i reach that age. Cheers

If there was a bus station at the county dump, the Muzak would be Tom Waits' stuff only.
It’s very wholesome that I have met people who have heard “Some men are searching for the whole grail, but ain’t nothing sweeter than riding the rails!” And think that Tom is talking about trains

yeh, certainly not coke rails
@LandlordTom11 ай бұрын
I think contextually the train image really works...there's nothing on the lyrics or tone that suggests, to me, using drugs. But maybe the guy got busted and spent the night in jail, maybe?....hmmmmmm now it sorta makes sense. But the sleep like a baby with the snakes and bugs part still makes me think of hobos and not drugs.
