EDF 5 is out already so I would jump on that instead. Both games are really fun but EDF 5 adds some really nice changes to the classes. Basically all of the classes are more enjoyable to play. Also playing one class progresses other classes as well, meaning you don't have to start the grind from the beginning when you wanna try the other classes. The amount of missions and ridiculously stupid weapons to blow up your teammates is still basically the same :D I've spent around 300 hours on both games so yeah, I think that they are very much worth your hard earned money.

What's also cool is that for a series like this you'd think the story is some light-hearted "yeah! let's kill the bugs and have the population cheer after a good mission, also the whole city was evacuated and there were 0 civilian deaths and all buildings magically re-build themselves each time!" And in reality the plot in those games, especially EDF5, is downright depressing and terrifying. SPOILERS The plot of EDF games can be summarized as: "We have a new weapon that will kill the monsters!" And the result is either "it didn't do jack and got wrecked" or "it did good, but something even worse appeared and immediately made it obsolete". And in EDF5 the ending is literally telling you that 90% of all humanity is dead.

Fun fact: as Khalifa Binhendi said, KZbin age-restricted the old video, because the Wing Diver costume is a bit.....skimpy. This is why through the entire video, Badger only has 2-3 minutes of Wing Diver footage, when with the other classes he shows enough actual footage to give you a good idea of the class, but he couldn't for Wing Diver. There are a couple clips, where the camera was placed at an angle where you can't really see anything about Wing Diver's outfit.

If you want to try the games, I'd recommend Iron rain for actual customization, more story emphasis, and generally not being as insane as the others, 5 for being a reboot that shares DNA with 4.1, but adds QOL improvements, or World Heroes/Friends if you want something extra silly and super casual in cute voxel graphics that are thte least likely to give you the heebie jeebies.

If you think webs are bad now, these games will make you hate them more. "Why would you wear that in warfare?" They don't. He had to edit that in because the actual game character model was too risque and even more outlandish. If you want to play a female character who can actually look like a badass and not a porn parody of her concept, Iron Rain is the only entry where you'll be satisfied. Ranger can actually call in vehicles like air raider in 5. Not as many, but still a decent selection, and you'd be surprised how effective a bike with machines guns can be when hitting a burb doesn't send it flying blocks away. Air Raider IS support, but most prefer to be FIRE support. Also, one of the QOL changes in 5 for them is going from needing collective kills to call in most or all artillery to some of it being strain timer cooldown so you can reliably drop more warheads on more foreheads. Saying it's a Gundam because they're fighting Kaiju doesn't work. Gundams fight other mechs and robots. Aliens and Kaiju are not what they fight. The last big QOL update for 5 is that canceling is no longer needed on Fencer. Dash chaining is not longer a bug, it's a feature.
