Years ago, my parents saw La Lupe at Audubon Ballroom, and they said that the place was packed with a racially diverse audience. When Lupe came on the stage, she sang and danced for over 2 hours without stopping. According to my folks, audience lost it and went bananas. They couldn’t get enough of her. My mom said that Lupe took over 10 curtain bows.

Your reference to Dick Cavett is definitely an important resource to the 60-70’s. He really was of the moment to some amazing people who really were important and usually very cool.

I know this has nothing to do with your video (I literally just started watching it two seconds ago), but I have a special request. I've seen all kinds of videos about the abandoned City Hall subway station, and I don't necessarily want to see the station. But what I AM interested in seeing is where the skylight can be seen FROM ABOVE. I THINK it's supposed to be in the parking lot of the City Hall parking lot. And there are grates somewhere where you can look down and see the station, as well. I'd love to see that. :D

I absolutely love your videos, and every topic you cover! Thank you so much, your videos really gave me much confidence going to NYC my 1st time. Im a growing artist from hawaii, but will someday be able to be your patreon. I moved to the east coast to be closer to NY, love being in the pine trees & snow now. NYC history is so vast, in such a short time really. Thank you for covering all topics, these 2 Women of New York vids were realllly moving. WOW!

This is a wonderful video! So rewarding to hear you talk and quote Zora Neale Hurston. Here in Orlando we celebrate her in a big way at the ZORA! Festival (happening this week thru this weekend). It is a multi-day event composed of public talks, museum exhibitions, theatrical productions, arts education programming, and a 3-day Outdoor Festival of the Arts. Taking place primarily in her hometown, Eatonville, Florida (10 miles north of Orlando) and throughout Orange County. Thank you for sharing the stories of these remarkable women! Loved your first video and love even more so the second. I also enjoyed the stories of La Lupe and the birth of salsa; Clara Hale and Margaret Corbin - such resiliance, love and strength. Thank you for sharing and all you do for us to be well-informed.

Dang, Tom, this one was so captivating! Don't get me wrong, I love all of your videos (I just rewatched the Sydney, AU episode for the third time), but there was a little twinkle in your eye throughout this adventure. Beautiful architecture, distinct snapshots of history, remarkable women who lived remarkable lives, very pretty shots of the river and riverside environs, and . . . Eric. In all sincerity, I'd love to tell you how helpful your videos have been for me over the past two or so years, but maybe not in the comment section. I've never looked at Patreon in my life (I've not even sure if I even understand what it is!), but if I can figure it out, I'll be in touch soon. One more thing, totally unrelated to this comment: how long does it take for mushrooms to kick in?

Amazing that you recalled that line from Their Eyes, an incredible book. In my graduate studies I was fortunate enough to take a class in African American Literature taught by the recently deceased, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Charles Fuller. It took over 20 years in academics to be introduced to these absolutely brilliant writers. Much is written for the need to enhance African American history in our schools, but let's not forget how much we learn from each other by reading literature. Political Science and Social Studies may teach facts but literature teaches us what is in the human heart.

4:15 it's awful to realise how many talented writers, artists musicians etc.... now recognized as famous, struggled to even live....... From Van Gogh, to Shelley to James Calvin Wilsey (Chris Isaac's guitarist), Lovecraft, Orwell, Rowling, Stephen King, Steinbeck.....etc... That appropriation from poverty is the motive behind some art forgers (van Meegeren, Eric Hebborn).... who wanted revénģe against "the establishment). Even "Girl With The Pearl Ear Ring" artist ....Vermeer.....suffered too, now one painting = $30 million
