Stacey Here we grow again-Tell me about it. I live in sunny, hot and humid south Florida, Miami to be exact and its next to imposible to grow any tomatoes. However, I found cherry tomatoes and some small bell shape tomatoes growing wild in my back yard. Don't really know where they came from, perhaps from bird droppings. My neighbor raises pigeons and that's the only explanation I can come up with. But they are thriving and doing well, without any personal care or attention. Meanwhile the ones I purchase from Home Depot or grow from seedlings, which I baby sit, fertilize, water and use good soil, its next to impossible to grow. They get fungus, snails, worms, caterpillars, or get infected with insects. I used everything and nothing seems to work at least not permanently. I am at my wits end and about ready to give up and will just have to settle on the wild tomatoes.

You need to talk about exact sprays to put on your tomato plants and leaves
@tomaszpilat5840
@tomaszpilat5840 6 жыл бұрын
Copper spray helps a lot. I've tried it, and my friends did as well. However, dont wait until the disease occurs. Spray when seedlings are around 6 inches tall (before planting), then a couple of times every 2-3 weeks (not earlier, as it will damage the plant). IT'S IMPORTANT YOU SPRAY EITHER EARLY MORNING OR LATE EVENING, SO IT DOESNT KILL THE BEES (if the spray it wet on the plant, the bees will carry it to their hive and kill other bees or the queen, which eventually weakens the colony, and if no queen, kills the hive). Ideally, its also good that it rains 3 days after the spray. The fruits can be eaten a few days after the spray.

The healthiest tomatoes seem to be the volunteers coming right out of my compost pile. I have 3 or 4 that have sprung up on the perimeter of my compost heap. Go figure. They receive no care from me, watering, nothing and they're as strong and happy as can be.

Rotate through three different anti-fungal spray mixed with bt powder. Spray every week or after a rain then restart. Start spraying when planted.use malathion as per lable when fruit sets. Or grind hot peppers and spray every week for leaf hoppers and stink bugs. Chlorothalonil (doconil) or sulphur (until 80) copper mancozeb mix before fruit ripens, quadris top early on for anthracnose. If you live in the south you have to spray. If organic spray more often.

Love the info you both gave. We planted our tomatoes, then we got 5 inches of rain everyday for a week, then more the week after. The plants looked good then they got dead brown leaves. I heard that you can put down a fungicide in the soil before planting. Will that help? Also, I am going to solarize. Do you think that will help. I am so tired of putting money into the garden and have the plants wither and die, but the tops keep growing and looking good for a while till they all wither and turn brown. Another problem is the leaf-footed bug. I spray them with soapy water and pick them off and drown them in a cup of soapy water. Is there any way to get rid of them? Thanks for any help.

Hi there I have been searching the cause of my problem.... Ireland based, stared 2 varieties from seed (scatolone and oxheart) I transplanted seedling once, all good. I transplanted them again in single pots over a week ago. The soil is not soaked just humid. Watered from the bottom, they are in the house on the window...they started get their leaves wilted and then dry. I am removing those leaves...the situation is not getting better and the leaves left curl up towards the bottom. The stem is nice and strong and green. No sings of rotting... the roots are not as developed as I'd like them to be... and out of 8 plants all of them are losing lots of foliage with 3 that have barely any left on (in middle small new foliage) ....what can I do...please help...

3 things. Remineralize the soil. Azomite is cheap and affective. Compost. Get your microorganism population up and happy. This is easily done with the compost and a nice mulch layer. Mulch is key to making the microorganisms happy. A soft bottomed tomato is just days away from being a black bottomed tomato. Either you dont have enough calcium or it's not available. If your ph is inbetween 6.4 and 6.8 your perfect. Outside of that range and your going to give the plants problems being able to uptake the calcium. This happens often Nutrient absorption is directly related to your ph. Google nutrient ph absorption chart and you will see the list of macro and micro butrients and the range in which they can be absorbed. Very interesting stuff. To test your soil ph, you must do whats called a slurry test. You can google that as well. Oregons constant gardener has a youtube channel thats helpful with this but there are many videos that can assist you. Good luck

@paulrph1

If it is a brown spot sound like blossom end rot and can be remedied by putting a little gypsum around the plant. It will not affect those that already have it but will protect the next generation. Gypsum is CaSo4 or Calcium sulfate and it is the calcium that fixes the problem.

i use a baking soda spray as a preventive against blight but the past two years it seems every time i spray it rains shortly afterwards. i would like to spray once a week to ten days but with all this rain the baking soda gets washed off. they say one to two tablespoons per gallon of water but i am going to stick with one tablespoon. i mixed up some the other day and used two tbs and the very edges of the leaves look to be burnt. naturally within a day or two of spraying it rained even though it was not supposed to. well according to the weather man anyway.

People, including "university experts" say tomatoes are heat-loving plants, but nothing could be further from the truth. Tomato plants in general really only want/need moderate heat. Extended periods (5 days or more) of 85F temps brings problems to tomato plants. Most gardening info/advice, even from "university experts", is complete junk.

What is the solution for this disease
@OklahomaGardening
@OklahomaGardening 5 жыл бұрын
Safick Moulan, Effective control of insects and diseases is imperative in commercial tomato production. Unless specialty varieties are being grown, look for varieties with resistance to Verticillium wilt and Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2 at a minimum. Seed catalogs often code these as VF1,2. Soil insecticide may be applied during soil preparation or in the transplant fertilizer solution to reduce cutworm damage. Scout for fruitworms beginning at the time of initial fruit set. Spray schedules must be developed and maintained. Spreader/sticker materials should be added to all spray solutions to improve leaf and fruit coverage and prevent spray wash off by rain or sprinkle irrigation. Refer to Extension Fact Sheets EPP-7625, EPP-7626, EPP-7627 and Circular E-832 for the most current information. Sprayers-A good sprayer for disease and insect control is essential for growing quality tomatoes. Adequate coverage of the leaf surfaces requires high pressure and several nozzles or high speed air movement to break up the spray material into small particles.

it would be interesting to see a truly "wild" tomato plant in nature; it's level of productivity and it's ability to withstand disease ???

ha, just did the research... "pimp", or Solanum pimpinellifolium, is the wild ancestor of all modern tomato plants; still found in Peru and Southern Ecuador. Although it has tiny, pea-sized fruits, it can thrive and produce in many various environments and can thwart-off many diseases. It seems that today's tomatoes are weak and sensitive...

+LARRY'S BRAIN I found one in the mountains behind my house, planted and watered it, it grew fantastic, no disease at all. They now grow wild around my property, to small but tasty. The wild natural tomatoes are very good.
