I wonder how much more about the past we would know today if the countless raided tombs remained intact instead.

So many treasures were lost thousands of years ago. Many graves across the world were looted soon after they were made. It was a widespread problem. The main reason for not doing so was respect for the dead, the ancestors. But people don't have respect for other people's ancestors and so conquerors often dug into burials too, as well as common thieves.

In the UK, the Picts would probably not have been such a great mystery. But Edward i made one invasion specifically to gather up all government archives, private charter chests, abbey, cathedral and monastery records. They took everything they could find looked to be land charters. (They used this to blackmail landowners to swear fealty in the Ragman Roll, or the same land would be granted to someine who would.) Most every other document his army could find, especially what looked like historical or regnal records; and anything not in French or Latin was to be destroyed. Edward said openly that Scotland was to have no history as a nation. It was all taken to the Tower. (Just one or two of these were “borrowed” in subsequent centuries by scholarly noblemen who never returned them, and these survived in other countries.) In the time of James vi (i in England) the remnants were to be returned to Scotland. But hey, coincidence or what! - they decided to put it all on one ship and it sank. So all that survives from then (in England it’s the Anglosaxon period) is either from enemy writings or from incidental mentions in Irish chronicles. And some copies-of-garbled-copies of king lists taken from England’s loot to France by happenstance.

In stories like the classic Mummy film, protective curses laid upon tombs are shown to be the bane of archaeologists, but it's funny to think that if curses were real and served as an actual deterrent against graverobbers they would in fact be a great boon in preserving the sites (assuming archaeologists were somehow better equipped to circumvent those curses themselves).

Maybe that's the origin or cursed tombs, to deter raiders.

Think it is a thing of the past? In poor parts of the world, tomb raiders loot graves in cemeteries to get at the metal coffins and sell them for scrap. Any valuables buried with the dead (even gold-filled teeth) are looted also.

Not just occupation of physical space, but historic space as well. Not destroying an established population's history, but weaving themselves into it as if it had always been their own.

Yep, revisionist history and antiwhiteness ideology promoted by activist-academics who despise western culture, history and heritage. It's institutional in Britain.

Why they desecrate grave of Nathan Bedford Forrest, or Francisco Franco
@helenamcginty4920
@helenamcginty4920 19 күн бұрын
Franco was reburied in the family maudoleum because the monument where he was buried had been built by slave labour of prisoners of war. The memories being preserved were not universally good ones for surviving famiies. His tomb, being Christian, would not have been full of bling. I never heard of the other person you mentioned but will look him up.

Sweden Alice Bah Kuhnke ordered the melting down of all newly discovered Viking era finds. Allegedly. This is somewhat controversial in its authenticity, but she definitely did order the melting down of certain Viking-era artifacts, specifically coins and some other more delicate/detailed metalworking (as opposed to weapons and armor) as well. Why a non Swede was the Swedish Minister for Culture is a mystery unto itself.

Are we sure they were maliciously raided? I mean, so many literally just have a doorway. I'm sure some were broken into, but I don't doubt that they were supposed to have been entered and retrieved
