Digestive diseases are affecting tens of millions of people everyday. So often gut issues are being misdiagnosed and ineffectively handled due to poor diet, misinformation, and general confusion. In this episode, the Gut Health MD, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz (or Dr. B for short) breaks down what is really going on with the microbiome and what we can do to stop damaging it and start supporting it. He drops some shocking facts about microbes and even how your past trauma and unresolved emotional scars can impact the health of your gut.
Dr. Bulsiewicz is well researched and an actively practicing physician that wants to simplify how you can improve your overall health by understanding your unique ecosystem and making better food choices to change your microbiome as early as tomorrow.

QUOTES:
“I think one of the major issues [...] is that we live in a society that is completely devoid of fiber consumption. And fiber is the preferred food of these gut microbes.” [10:03]
“I personally am vegan [...] I'm not teaching the science because I'm vegan. I'm vegan, because the science led me to where I am today.” [11:42]
“with every single dietary choice, we are contributing to the balance that exists within our microbiome.” [18:33]
“our fiber deficiency is causing us to suffer consequences because our gut microbes are not being fed.” [24:56]
“...the microbiome changes in less than 24 hours, whatever dietary choice you make. So literally, the food that you're eating today will have an effect on your microbiome tomorrow.” [37:04]
“If you are suffering from trauma, and abuse history, whether it was physical, sexual, emotional, psychological. If you don't directly address that issue, you will not heal your microbiome. The stress that is driven by that underlying trauma history is an open wound that persists, and it festers until it is addressed.” [41:30]

Tom, I have a question for you.... don't you go nuts after interviewing all those different "ideology" doctors contradicting themselves? Keto, vegan, paleo, plant-based, carnivore, eat 6 meals a day diet, intermittent fasting ... all stating different studies... cherry-picking all their stuff?! Who to believe? At the end of the day, we do what's best for us for our lifestyle and preferences.

@@Musika1220 Our understanding of any subject is extremely limited and constantly evolving. We should endeavor to learn and experiment what each expert says and determine what works best for you. Nutrition and ones personal relationship with food is jus that, personal. What may work for many may not be right for another. The basic truths remain the same, eat well, drink water, and get good sleep. The specifics is where you should experiment to discover what you need to feel your best.

Tom, love the work you do but maybe a little piece of constructive criticism, it’s really hard to buy one of your sponsors-like thryve when it’s even said here that there is no way to know if those test are accurate @ 26 mins in, you may have a little money to throw away on those test that may or may not be accurate but I’m pinching pennies trying to get out of college debt, pay off the mortgage, get a vehicle that won’t break down and maybe I can use to have some fun outdoors on the weekends

On another note-hopefully less annoying than my last shitty opinion above. I wonder what Dr B would think about epsom salt baths-often called sensory deprivation tank- which have so many other benefits than just sensory deprivation-soaking in magnesium sulfate & allowing the body to take in as much as it needs through the largest organ in the body for digestion, sleep, depression & so many other benefits. I’ve heard medicine can be absorbed through skin. Please tell me if you believe/heard otherwise. Interesting research about the reaction from the skin to the environment triggers some of those epigenetics that are talked about here, the skin organ is so powerful. We have an extremely smart organ controlling internal functions based on the external environment. Just another wonderful thing we don’t give enough credit to in my stupid opinion

Dorjee- Are you practicing Wim Hoff's protocol now, specifically 'cold exposure' ? How is that going, if you don't mind my asking...or are you following only the breathing practices? Watching Wim Hoff in an interview, he comes across as a nut job, IMO. But I'm hearing/reading more & more that cold exposure, specifically, is very good for our mitochondria & for longevity. I re-watched a David Sinclair interview ( I greatly respect SInclair's science-based knowledge on increasing longevity) - I just watched his interview on IT, again - and am more convinced than ever that Cold Exposure is the way to go. Problem IS, I completely crumble at the thought of a damn cold shower, though. I'm drrawn to the idea bc I feel it is NECESSARY for good health & longevity, but totally REPELLED by the thought of an effen 🥶 cold shower!

Drs Berry, Saladino, Cywes, Baker, and other Carnivore doctors mean well, but they are misguided. A Carnivore diet is very extreme, and so is Frutarian by the way. They are doomed to fail eventually. I have been low-carb for years but this guy is super convincing. I may have to reintroduce some things. Thanks for this interview. My only question would be, what about people who struggle with blood sugar issues? I guess you would just eat more vegetables than fruit.

Hi. I was a low-carb diet for four years! Three years paleo-based eating then a year on a keto diet. I lost a lot of weight and was convinced low-carb was the answer. However, I study sustainability at school and decided I needed to go plant-based for environmental reasons- but was terrified of the effect it would have on my body. I read Dr. Bs book “fiber fueled” then made the switch. I started eating whole grains, legumes, and added more fruit and holyyyyy. I was surprised that my blood sugar levels were fine. I now I have way more energy, better bowels, and I lost weight! I highly recommend his book if you are thinking ab introducing more food to increase your gut flora :)

I thought the part about needing to heal trauma to fix your gut issues was interesting. Does anyone know if he covers this in his book?

I see on an Amazon review that his hardcover edition doesn’t have footnotes and references for the research he cites. I’m hoping/ assuming it will be added when they publish the paperback. Wondering if it will and if there’s a date for the paperback. Thanks in advance for any info.

Thank you for information but,one thing make me to ask you that how important is staying outsite, like thousands years ago human being started to transform their lives and here I want to mention microbiom? How important is being outside and eat and breath fresh air? Is anything related with lungs that we do not know until now? I know exercise and ..... not tv.and .... But the nature?

I have always been a health conscious person, my diet had always been free from sugar, processed foods, totally natural, very high in fresh vegetables and fruits. I don't suffer from digestive problems, but my health was still poor. Until I changed my diet to 90% animal , very high in saturated fat in the form of butter, eggs, meat fat then most of my health issues are improved if not gone, my lab results are great: CRP is 0.2, triglyceride is 35, HDL is 140, I put on more muscle . I don't believe in a high fiber diet. My poop is better on those days that my plant intake is low or none.
