Not many of those men left in the world sadly. Both showed (Doc and Wyatt vs Ringo) and could use a lot more real men vs today and bullshit finesse it and hope it works out. Doc passed early but went down with more pride and respect than 99.9% of cowards when times get tough. That's why people still remember him today.

Ringo just about shit himself when he realized it was Doc. Great acting. Very hard to portray false bravado because you're acting out someone who is pretending to be confident. Act too confident and Ringo's underlying nervousness doesn't come through. Act too scared and you lose the essence of Ringo's character. Val was obviously phenomenal, too.

Little trivia for you: Willem Dafoe was one who was originally considered for the role of Doc Holliday, but because of his film The Last Temptation Of Christ, the studio decided against him. I love this scene, this was one of Val Kilmer's best performances, if not the best. The real Johnny Ringo was found next to a creek with a gunshot to the head, the consensus by, most historians, is that he shot himself, so I liked how they included the head shot in this scene. Great freaking movie, a top 10 all time western, in my opinion.

It's believed somebody shot him with a rifle while sitting in the split of a tree where he was found. His horse was found with his boots upside down in the stirups, which westerners did when bedding down..to keep critters from making a home in them. Scorpions and rattlesnakes...

The scene perfectly illustrates the contrast between the 2 gunfighters: Ringo spent the earlier part of the movie impressing people with his gunplay and intimidating everyone, while Doc amused him, studied him, and never showed more than he needed to. But when Doc was ready, there was never any hesitation, and he never started the fight, even when he challenged him for the last time as he just saw it as unfinished business. Both were deadly, but while Ringo was in it for glory and thrills, Doc was in it to kill if him or Wyatt was threatened. One killed for thrills, the other when it was called for, and didn't miss. And Ringo died so that Wyatt would live. Great storytelling.

They say acting is all about reacting. You see a lot of sitcom stars who just recite lines. The pure beauty of talented actors is the subtext. You can see it in Ringos eyes when it goes from worry to recklessness when he commits to the contest. I think Val’s character was more complex where he wants to show that he hopes he is going to lose so he can avoid dying of tuberculosis, and disappointment he hasn’t yet found a worthy advisory to challenge him.

1:23 - I always liked that one look of deep concern on Doc's face as they start to circle. I think it's vital. It's the only time he ever has that face during the movie, not during the OK Corral shootout or any of his other confrontations. It's a great choice by Val or the director to have that look in there, that he knows he's in deadly peril. He's governing his fear and it just flashes across his face. It makes the victory payoff much sweeter when you show just a little vulnerability. That you had fear and overcame it. That there was a real chance you could lose. That your opponent is a _real_ threat. That's good story-telling. A lot of modern day director's never have their protagonist show any fear at all, and that's a mistake. It humanizes their struggle, we empathize with them and it builds up their opponent. Rather than just rolling through them like a bad-ass. I bring up Ripley in Aliens as an example. Lots of fear and which she overcame and got the victory. Much more satisfying.
@MADSCIENTISTGONESANE61665 ай бұрын
Also to include even John wick has a bit of hesitation or even what you mentioned in your comment of the emotions and facial expressions are when someone could be facing a dire situation. Even John wick flinches yet still persist to do what's needed to be done. Yeah it's cool when a director sets in a realistic undertone to match someone's response in a real life physical confrontation. As you mentioned you may have fear but you push through it.
