More "body" in the 5th gen. I listened through AirPods and studio headphones alternatively. Great that you always manage to talk to a "peasant and a king" when presenting information, no one is left out. Of course, you're a teacher but still I want you to know it impresses so much. Great also that you never get tired of bringing in your other mics for comparizon so I once again got convinced the Lewit 240 Pro is such a value for the money ..

1. Great video! 💯 2. Love the fact that you pay attention to details others don't mention. 3. To anyone reading this - if you wish to use it via USB-C and are using Audition on a PC (I've heard some do), you cannot use 32-bit float! That's based on their guide page, and also their return email to me. _edit_ : _Also if your computer does not have a USB-C (desktop perhaps) then you need to purchase an adaptor eg. Rode SC18_ . I have the Rode-NT USB (a good mic for what it is) and wanted a good Rode XLR. I've been thinking about this mic for about 4 months, and because of the _few_ confusing but _critical_ flaws and oversights, I haven't. Now I'm sad and don't know what to do. Thanks for the review. 👍

I still have the NT-1A that I bought twelve years ago. I didn’t know at the time that the difference from the NT-1 was a presence boost, but it has served me well. It’s also nice having a setting for it in the Rodecaster Pro 2.

Surreal! I was just doing a deep dive on this mic and you’re my favorite channel. KZbin recommended this and I was thinking how did I miss this video? Wow perfect timing! It’s crazy the value you get with this. I could buy it and skip having an audio interface and still get 32 bit audio with amazing sound and xlr if I need it later. All for way less than a shure sm7b.

@@tombuck awesome thanks I much! The thing that really kills me is the no headphone jack. Having no way to listen to a recording without latency is a real bummer. Another KZbinr said that in low latency mode there wasn’t any lag so I thought it might be ok. I’ll take your word for it that it isn’t. I’m getting a Samson mic that’s super cool coming soon you may want to check out. It’s called the Sagomic and it’s super tiny and sounds great in reviews. My point is it’s $30 and has headphone out 🤷‍♂️ Seems like a deliberate choice to exclude it so their usb specific mics have distinctive feature sets to sell them. Goes to your point on them choosing marketing over customer satisfaction sometimes. Still a great company though! So much innovation.

Hey Tom! Great video. Have just gotten an NT1 5th Gen about a month ago and love and agree with everything you said. Run this with a Procaster and a VideoMic NTG and this was a Really good review. Going into my AI-1 it works a treat under XLR. The Procaster requires an SE Dynamite, but the AI-1 gain for the NT1 is way down at about 11 o’clock/40%ish (~24db?) under USB, Rode Connect sets it up nicely and I can’t notice any difference in raw sound in my DT770 headphones. Zero latency … yep… it’s a challenge Biru I connect the headset to the NTG that is also on Connect and latency to ULTRA Low and it seems to me to be close. But then… I typically only do Voice so less important…. THANKS and WELL DONE!

Yeah, I love my 4th-gen NT1, so the 5th-gn NT1 isn't really in the cards for me. But for some reason, I feel like I need to watch every video about it! For me to make the jump, it would have needed to provide much more USB functionality like you said near the end of your video. Floating-point audio is very interesting to me, but I'm perfectly fine with being meticulous about setting the gain. Unless, of course, the RØDECaster Pro II got a firmware update that included 32-bit float recording...

As for the Condenser vs. Dynamic, i think that for a room, with no treatment, Dynamic is the best. I've tried a 20€ fifine condenser mic, and it sounds good, with no echo once setup, while a more expensive (and worse by any means, don't buy them, please) blue yeti sounds awful, even after the setup of an EQ, echo all over the place.

Should I buy the Rode Signature Series or the Lewitt LCT 240 Pro?
@tombuck
@tombuck 10 ай бұрын
Honestly, both mics are wonderful and have a VERY similar sound so you really can't go wrong either way. I think you can get the Lewitt with a shock mount for a bit less money than the Rode, so if you're on a budget, that might be the way to go. Depending on where you buy from, you could order both, try them out, and then return the one that you don't like. Sometimes the best way to choose is to use things in your specific environment with your exact setup.

I have a bunch of Samson tabletop stands I found on Amazon. They're cheap and they work great. I've been really impressed with the PodMic USB so far. I do like the sound of the NT1 better, but the new PodMic is no slouch. And if you're planning to use it primarily for USB, then you can save your EQ settings to the mic itself so it always sounds that way. It also has the benefit of more physically controls and a headphone output.

Glad the video helped, but to add to it, the biggest thing is really just understanding the mics' pickup patterns. Multiple NT1's or other condensers are super common on podcasts. This one really works best about 6-12 inches from the speaker. A shotgun or pencil condenser mic is better to be boomed out of frame (the Rode Videomic NTG or Audio Technica AT897 are a couple relatively affordable options).

I am using the NT1 (4th gen, exactly the one you have) in a untreated room with wave XLR interface, with the USB option, will I get the rode connect software filter with the 5th Gen even I am using a none-rode interface?

AS I understand it, once you adjust the settings with the software they'll stay that way anytime you use it as a USB mic with or without the Rode software, but it won't apply to XLR>

It’ll likely pick up a little more room sound than the MV7, but it’s not too bad. And the quality is terrific.

Did you really say: "You don't need any additional adapter to mount this shock mount?" If you use an Elgato wave arm (which happens to have a 1/4 inch mount) you *do* need an adapter 3/8 on 1/4! 😛

Hmmm, One my office isn't treated because unlike you I use my office for all kinds of things. So as much as I love the Earthworks Ethos, my standard Mic is the Rode Procaster, to my voice is a cheaper version of the Shure SM-7B. The mic (NT1-5th) is puzzling to me. As you say it a very good XLR mic but then you basically paid for all the stuff (4 D/A converted etc) for nothing. And if you're using it as a USB Mic again, it's very good, but you can't monitor it now their logic is, well it's 32-bit so you don't need to, but that a BAD habit we don't want to start! My podcast is Audio only so I don't care how big the mic is. But if you're doing a video that mic with Pop filter is HUGE and is NOT something I think you should use. The Earthworks mic is great as you can be 6 to 8 inches away and still get great sound and is out of the way. Ok, that is my professional thought on the subject.

The SM7B sounds much more muddy in comparison, but from what I know, it's also intended to be EQ'd (so it's almost like the most flat/neutral sound profile possible to start with).

I thought the fourth generation mic sounded better. It is unlikely that Rode changed the internal specs for the mic. The big change is the USB input. 32 bit recording is not a function of the mic, it is a function of your audio recorder. I have heard experts question whether most mics can even take advantage 32 bit/192 htz recording. So it is possible that Rode improved the RT1 mic's ability to handle high bit rates. However, if this was true, then Rode would not say that the sound was unchanged. Also, to create a mic with the ability to handle 32 bit and 192 htz recording is likely going to be VERY expensive. So I doubt that the 5th gen RT1 handles 32 bit recording any better than the 4th generation.
@tombuck
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
From what I understand (and admittedly I'm no expert on this), there is new hardware inside the mic that allows for it to handle processing and 32 bit float.
@franklong6269
@franklong6269 Жыл бұрын
@@tombuck I am no expert either, but I have listened to sound experts address 32 bit/192 htz recording and say that very few mics are capable of capturing that massive scope of sound. In a way it makes sense because this is cutting edge technology. The sheer amount of information that a mic must input for 32 bit / 192 htz recording is staggering. It will be interesting to see how the microphone industry responds. But a second issue arises in that even if the mic is capable of competently inputting all of this information, a substantial part of it is beyond the range of human hearing. So measuring equipment must be used to even check if the mic is indeed capturing all of the information and range. I have a Tascam X8 audio recorder that is capable of recording 32 bit/192 htz files. But I have not used 32 bit recording because of the massive file sizes and because I question whether any differences will be discernible in my recordings. I record original songs that I write on guitar, which do have a very wide vocal range. So I only care about the range of sound that the human ear can detect. The Tascam X8 does provide protection against clipping in very low ranges and very high ranges if I use 32 bit recording, but in real world use, I have found it very difficult to make audio recordings clip when using 24 bit/44.1 htz recording parameters. For "high-end" musical recordings (like Tidal) that streaming services offer, It is my understanding that they use 24 bit/96 htz recording settings. So that would appear to be the top-end range that the human ear can actually discern. However, I am learning about these audio engineering principles right now and so there is a lot that I do not fully understand. I do find my 24 bit/44.1 htz recordings to be excellent. Since many streaming services may not accept 96 htz recording rates, I have not used that setting yet, though the X8 will record at 96 htz easily. All this comes back to the original question, what exactly would Rode do to its NT1 Mic to facilitate 32 bit recording? Perhaps add better input capturing range? But that would be VERY expensive and I don't think they could sell the mic for $250.00 if that was the case. Also, doe the Gen 5 Rode NT1 record a 96 htz and 192 htz rates better than the Gen 4 NT1? That might be possible with a hardware change in the mic circuit board. I would like to hear Rode's sound engineers address these questions because 32 bit recording will be the future standard for the audio industry in my opinion.
