This video sold me on the Sennheiser Profile. Both mics seem great, and the Rode honestly sounds slightly better in my opinion, but the physical knobs and small form factor won me over on the Profile. I'm using it for calls while working or gaming, and having a relatively tiny mic that doesn't need a pop filter, really makes for an unobtrusive solution for really nice sound. The Rode would be my choice if I were recording, but for calls while doing other things, the unobtrusive design of the Profile is winning my money.
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
This is my conclusion too. I prefer the sound of the Rode in a side-by-side comparison, but the functionality of the Sennheiser is tough to beat (plus it does also sound awesome).

Love your video's by the way, very informative and captivating. You have an infectious personality.

@@4band1t29 and im here to ask you if since those 3 weeks, did you find a way ?
@flashmutex Жыл бұрын
The Rode NT-USB+ is more expensive because it has much more functionality built in. It needs to be properly setup with the RODE Central software, because that's where you actually program the on-board chip with the following features: "compressor, noise gate, high-pass filters and the legendary APHEX® Aural Exciter™ and Big Bottom™". After programming the chip as desired, no software is needed because the settings are stored in the onboard chip.
@francoisguillon4766 Жыл бұрын
So you think a rode nt usb mini with these same features would be better than a senheiser profile for voiceover ? Thanks
@flashmutex Жыл бұрын
@@francoisguillon4766 Yes. It's a good mic. Make sure to adjust its high-pass filter and compressor to get the sound you want. Also, make sure to get close to it to get the bass of your voice. Putting it on a boom arm close to your mouth instead of letting it standing on the table makes a big difference.

Thank you for such a thorough and insightful review of two great USB mics, Tom! Inspired by this video, I bought the profile earlier this month (it was on sale!) for work Zoom calls. After a week, I had to return it. The sound was not as rich and clear on my non sound treated home office as I had hoped it would be or would be similar to the rode mini I have been using for a few years. Just received the Rode NT1+ today, and immediately fell in love with the sound and the fact that it still retained that Rode richness and clarity despite being rather far from me so that it’s out of frame (thanks for being so precise, Tiny 2 Osbot!) when I’m on Zoom. For some reason, I don’t really notice the size of the Rode mic although it is noticeably larger than the profile. A great investment that I know I will use for years to come. Thanks for all your work, Tom! 🎉

Thank you, you made me choose the profile. Mainly want one for teams calls. Sounds silly, but as a consultant that is in meetings all day I have noticed that a good camera and mice do make you come across as more professional. The two main selling points for me are. It rejected the traveling sound like if I type on the keyboard while talking. And most important. No app needed. My current assignment is in a bank and ohh boy is my computer locked down. I can't even install the app to get the most out of my Logitech keyboard or mouse. And we are not allowed/able to use industry standard programs like resharper or postman due to security concerns. So the fact that this doesn't need an app is really a killer feature. Thank you.

I more or less randomly picked up the Hyperx Quadcast S year or two ago, which at that time wasn't that much cheaper than this one, and I am rather satisfied with it, but for my use - audio/video conferencing, I really don't need to touch any settings, ever. I set the gain once and forget it - however, with that mic, the gain wheel at the bottom (or on top, with how I mounted it on an arm), I constantly mess with it when I reposition my mic and forget I should grab it from the top. I do use the mute on that, and I use the LED to turn from off to solid red when it's muted, but I also started using Stream Deck recently and control my mute from that solely. As I need a mic for my 2nd work desk, I will be picking up this Rode NT-USB+, because I don't see much of a gain (ehm) going for XLR and dedicated interface for that, and for my use, this one hits all the marks. But I can imagine for people doing actual recording/streaming, the missing gain control would be a problem (although it's still just USB mic, so could be even more convenient to map it to your mouse with something like logitech logi+ mouse selection or any other 3rd party utility. Or a stream deck type of action buttons.

After using the original Blue Yeti for almost 12 years it's really time for a change for my 16th podcast year and I really can't decide between the Sennheise Profile and the Rode NT-USB(+). Both really sound like the next step I want to make regarding my setup upgrade. That's why I would like to ask you how both handle background noise? Unfortunately every room here is pretty noisy and even with a bit of work there are a few sounds I still have to live with in my recordings. You already said in one of your videos that there's no mic that doesn't pick up background in some way, but perhaps one of the two does it better than the other? :D Greetings from Germany, all the best, thanks in advance and have an awesome weekend!
@Acoustic-Rabbit-Hole8 ай бұрын
The Rode definitely sounds better for spoken-word, but the Sennheiser is prettier, and it's also plug-n-play. No software needed. And it has gain button and mute. And great sound isolation. Yet, I would only use the Sennheiser Profile if someone gave it to me for free. And even though the Rode sounds excellent for podcast, and probably not bad on guitar or other instrument, I won't use it (even if someone gave it to me for free,) because it would look ugly in my studio decour.

I honestly should’ve gone into the apps more here. They’re super powerful, and if you’re already used to EQ’ing with software, it’s essentially like having a virtual Rodecaster for the mic. 😎 That being said, if the Yeti is doing what you like, then maybe it’s worth sticking with!

I think the challenge will only improve my tracking/editing/mixing...especially on the EQ front. Nice video, thanks!

Thanks for this video Tom! Would you mind elaborating on what settings to use in rode central (like you mentioned at the end of the video) to make the USB + sound good/better? For context I’ll be using this to record vocals for my music. Thanks again!

Hi Tom. Can the microphone be mounted on another mic stand? Thanks for all your work!
@DefCantGame Жыл бұрын
Seeing as its built the same as the original the piece that screws into the boom arm has an adapter in it that you can adjust depending on the stand mount size so yes it can, does get annoying if you want to take it off and on cause you have to screw that whole piece with the knob on and off

Yep, it’s got a standard 5/8” mount 👍

Hello Tom, I bought the Rode NT USB+ after previously owning the Rode NT USB mini, i am very happy with the quality of the USB+ but I'm facing an issue that I am wondering if you experienced reviewing the mic, hearing my voice in a recording or a third party monitoring software sounds great and fine, but hearing my voice using the phsycial zero latency port sounds very nasally, even tho while connected to the same port my voice sounds fine in recordings, it's only so nasally with the zero latency monitoring, is that common? Did you have the same experience with your unit? Is my voice supposed to sound the same in recordings as in zero latency monitoring?

Great video! The Rode nt usb+ needs to be compared to the rode nt usb mini or the rode XCM-50 kind of the usb mini successor . I personally have the nt usb mini and use it as an everyday mic and its a brilliant starting mic. Also the rode nt usb mini has a physical mute button.

Thank you! I honestly don't do much in terms of processing. With USB mics I usually record into either Quicktime or Adobe Audtiion and then add a little bit of Voice Isolation in Final Cut Pro (roughly 20%). With XLR mics running through the Rodecaster, I typically stick with the presets because I think Rode did a great job on them.

I have a MacBook Pro and a complete novice when it comes to microphones and technology (and your content has been a great help, Tom). I'm looking for a decent USB mic for online meetings (Zoom, MS Teams). Although I prefer the sound of the Rode, I'm thinking for my use case, the Sennheiser is a better option with the physical controls and noise rejection. Can I ask a gain settings question, please? Does the physical gain control directly affect the software gain control in MacOS, or would you set the software gain to max and adjust via the mic control? Or something else? Thanks.

Green headphone cable! What is going on? Lol. Enjoyed your comments on the NT-USB+, I have the older model which has a USB B connector on the mic. USB C is definitely an improvement. I agree about the “missing’ gain control.

Would you be able to make video review comparison between Rode NT-USB+ and Shure MV7? Thanks
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
I do have an MV7 review! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6qZg4p4dp6nes0 So while they're not in the same video, you can get a sense for how they sound on the same voice in the same environment.

Tom! Thank you for your thoughts and review. I'm having a hard time to choose between the Sennheiser Profile and Rode NT-USB+. Both of those mics sounds good to me. I want to use the mic to record (short) guitar videos. So, a mic for my amp. What would you recommend? And also...which mic doesn't include a cable to connect to a smartphone? I'm using a iPhone. Thanks.

Hey Tom, have you tried the NT1 5th Gen? It now has USBC connection and it never clips. I think it’s going to be a great mic for many people getting started recording audio.
@bigbigplanet Жыл бұрын
It can still clip for livestreaming but yes, for recording, you get a 32-bit float file to work with which is super nice. I'm also looking forward to Tom's review. :)

Just got the profile. It works with my android phone (but it’s for business) but not on my iphone 11 (usb-c to lightning). Any expert here who can tell me why?
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
It likely depends on the cable- it needs to be "MFI Certified" (it's one of those Apple things...).

Thank you Tom for another great video. I think this might be the first time I disagree with you, Tom. With your voice I liked the Sennheiser more than the Røde. And it's amazing how Sennheiser made it so simple. Usually they tend ti do the opposite.
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
I will not argue with you preferring the Sennheiser- I LOVE that mic!

Are you able to record audio and film directly on an iPhone with this mic?
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as you have a USB C adapter or a cable like Rode’s SC19
